I went out on a bike ride today and on the trail saw some old dude in a CCCP soccer jersey just blasting Russian classical music/some soviet anthem as he rode by. My girlfriend yelled at him to say she liked his shirt and he rode back by us and nodded at us. Fucking bizarre experience in bougie ass Carmel Indiana
That's a lot of kerry posts on main. Chapo needs YOU to do your part in reporting all Kerry posters.
Lol I think their script is upvoting anything with Kerry in it. If only upbears mattered.
Just being a little bit openly lefty while being a math educator would help a lot. Harder to tell people that all the ideas on the left are unrealistic / childish / the numbers don't add up / etc when the first lefty that comes to mind is their math teacher.
Also like... teach exponential functions and system modeling? The population of rabbits in this forest grows at 12% per year, what does the graph of population of rabbits over time look like? When are we drowning in rabbits? Here's a real graph of a real ecological model, why doesn't it look like that? Repeat a few times. By the way this is how compound interest works, and this is how reinvesting stock dividends works....
Engage your students. Model appropriate behavior, encourage self-driven learning. If you haven't yet, read Pedagogy of the Oppressed. Highly recommended for all leftists, required reading for leftist (or really all) teachers. The single most influential book for my pedagogy, one of the most important books for my ideology.
On a math perspective, I highly recommend reading What is Mathematics, Really? by Hersch. It's a truly enjoyable read.
I recommend making the left side inversely proportional to the right side
What we've needed to do the whole time was embrace inequality, and we were too blinded by ideology to see it
Organize your workplace, do some mutual aid, the same as any other profession.
Marxism and socialism also has a real scientific and empirical basis, this blog contains some good background, if you ever want to talk about the math of socialism I guess. Cybersyn was pretty cool.
After I dropped out of high school, I lived with a guy for four years who was a pure of a mathematician as you're ever going to find. Real "beautiful mind" type of stuff going on with this guy. He was eventually diagnosed with schizo-affective disorder, but in all that time he has been a tutor and a best friend to me for 25 years now, so I'm just going to say that the best thing you can do for the left is to keep on teaching math. Number theory cracked my mind open in a way that LSD never did. It should be part of the curriculum in any society I want to build.
I just had the worst Captcha experience. I almost couldn’t log in. They told me to select all of the motorcycles. There were bicycles and scooters, but none of them were motorcycles, it was like working with a 4 year old.
Day 6 of demanding Liz Warren present proof of life for Bailey. You have not been forgotten sweet dog
I mean this in the most respectful way possible but have you considered therapy, especially CBT? That is a lot of very intense negative thoughts you believe very strongly about yourself. It might be nice if you had someone in real life to bounce them off of, who could gently challenge them in real time, or help you see those thoughts are not integral to who you are. Maybe you've already done that and this isn't helpful at all but it was just a thought
You can do a good bit of CBT work without a therapist. Essentially it's becoming aware of cognitive distortions and combatting those thoughts over and over until it becomes automatic. You already have a voice in your head that shit-talks you all the time - doing this builds a counter voice that defends you and speaks with compassion.
I have also had a lot of difficulty with traditional therapy. I'll edit this comment in a sec with a link to a folder of some of the books I have used to treat myself. Feeling Good is a well known one about CBT, but tbh I have not read it, I learned CBT elsewhere and have found the trauma books in this folder more helpful long term as I have pretty serious mental illness.
edit: Here is the folder
I used dialectical materialism at work today and it worked and that was so cool
We have had this project at work that has not been working I won't go too much in the details for obvious reasons
We are facing a contradiction, we want to organize and extract relationships between extremely long, specialized, texts (and sometimes extremely short texts), find how they relate, how their parts relate internally, and so on. The higher ups had a vision and it simply didn't match reality.
So I told them that instead we should look at all real data we have, study them to be able to find what kind of structure they embed and see if some of them are reccuring and systematic (because we want to be able to do some logic reasoning on said structure), hence going from the particular to the universal. And that if we cannot find said structure (resolve the contradiction between having a bunch of unstructured text and the need for something upon which we can reason systematically), then our approach to the problem is wrong and needs to change.
And they agreed
I know it's not much, but it's something, and I felt like I was applying a tiny bit of On Contradiction in real life.
Is it correct to say that "it is an explanation of current material circumstances using the scientific method"? What do people usually mean when they say 'used dialectical materialism'?
More or less, I think — I am no expert, someone like @FUCKTHEPAINTUP or @gammison could tell you more — it's finding the contradictions in an objective situation, and trying to resolve these contradiction (or understanding how they are getting resolved), for the situation to continue evolving
Had a thought about how they’d transfer power from Biden to Harris. Instead of having Biden step down on a health/mental state basis, they’ll do an own-MeToo and have him step down as penance for his sexual misconduct. Dems get their token minority/women as president, they get to tout themselves as being the party that doesn’t tolerate mistreat of women, but will also memorialize Biden as being honorable for committing political sepukku .
That’s the point, they’d spin Biden stepping down as having cured any trace of rot. And mind you, the DNC would adamantly deny that they had anything to do with the decision, that it was all Biden’s personal decision.
They’re just gonna set off the bomb embedded in his other eye, but this time with full force
It always feels good to thoroughly wash your teeth/mouth out after a case of guttermouth.
What's the best way to work towards starting a community with people somewhere remote? Things are accelerating at a rapid pace, and I eventually want to move to bumfuck nowhere with a bunch of trusted comrades and work to build a self-sufficient community. However, how do you bring this up without sounding like an absolute nutjob?
As leftists, we understand that strength comes from community, and I really don't want to go the libertarian "just stock up guns and ammo yourself" route. Going somewhere and building a community that's self sustaining with other leftists is something I think would be really beneficial, especially as we're cascading towards the climate end times.
I'll probably eventually ask this in /c/askchapo or a climate community when we get one, but I wanted to get some initial ideas first.
As a disgruntled sysadmin, I have a few ideas about things that could be implemented to improve the lives and stability of people living there. Unfortunately, I know jack shit about permaculture and farming, so I'm going to have to do a lot of learning about that.
I, uhh, already have a decent amount of experience with arduinos, and with using them on a network.
I'm also slacking on a bunch of projects too lol, it's easy to start them but I can never seem to find myself finishing them.
I mean, it's not that I don't want to help change the existing community. The problem is that by the time revolution might be possible in the US, a majority of the country will have died from climate change, and the US will have no problem using its massive military machine against its own people if it means the ruling class gets to hold onto power.
Besides, if we are able to set something up where we could archive theory and provide resources for people struggling for housing, it could be really beneficial.
That sounds fantastic, but unfortunately I doubt it'll ever happen.
Maybe if there's abandoned towns somewhere in the midwest with semi-recent infrastructure, but water, food, and electricity would be the first things lost when the climate starts to really accelerate.
You've answered your own question, you just don't realize it. The empty void you are staring into is where you fit.
Try to learn what you can about Slab City. What you find on the internet will deceive you, look for accounts from people who have lived there. I'm telling you about it because it's a good example of how not to do this, however there are still some valuable positive lessons to be learned from there as well. It's the only commune that I know of that operates on a scavenger economy, it's just... different. I can't properly explain the difference but if you study other voluntary communities you'll see what I mean right away. I consider it significant because the people in the Slab approach the problem of a collapsing civilization head-on. Like I said, it's different.
