On this day in 1953, the Iranian coup d'état, known in Iran as the 28 Mordad coup d'état, was executed. It was the overthrow of the democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh in favour of strengthening the monarchical rule of the Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi on 19 August 1953.

It was orchestrated by the United States (under the name TPAJAX Project or "Operation Ajax") and the United Kingdom (under the name "Operation Boot").

Mosaddegh had sought to audit the documents of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (AIOC), a British corporation (now part of BP) and to limit the company's control over Iranian oil reserves. Upon the AIOC's refusal to co-operate with the Iranian government, the parliament (Majlis) voted to nationalize Iran's oil industry and to expel foreign corporate representatives from the country. Judging Mosaddegh to be unreliable and fearing a Communist takeover in Iran, UK prime minister Winston Churchill and the Eisenhower administration decided to overthrow Iran's government.

Between 200 and 300 people were killed because of the conflict. Mosaddegh was arrested, tried and convicted of treason by the Shah's military court. On 21 December 1953, he was sentenced to three years in jail, then placed under house arrest for the remainder of his life. Other Mosaddegh supporters were imprisoned, and several received the death penalty. After the coup, the Shah continued his rule as monarch for the next 26 years until he was overthrown in the Iranian Revolution in 1979.

The stopped clock

My only timepiece is a wall clock. One day I forgot to wind it and it stopped. I went to visit a friend whose watch is always correct, stayed a while, and returned home. There I made a simple calculation and set the clock right.

How did I do this when I had no watch on me to tell how long it took me to return from my friend's house?

Like usual have fun :soviet-heart: and remember to dm @Wmill the answer.

CMV: At this point, whenever you hear "tankie" you can just mentally substitute "pinko commie."

That's literally all it means. Anyone who is still unironically calling people tankies is just a reactionary

My grandma's almost certainly going to die of covid, which is kind of fucking me up a bit cause I haven't been able to talk to her in a few years cause her dementia was pretty bad and I needed to go through a parent to talk to her and I absolutely couldn't keep talking to her through my parents especially since they kept trying to police what I'd say to her (i.e. anything that hinted at me being gay, including but not limited to important life shit like getting married... even though I mentioned girlfriends before and have been too gay to function since before I could walk).

I don't know if there's gonna be a funeral or other service but I'd have to skip it (not just cause I won't talk to most of my family but also cause I'm in the middle of moving and cause I'm not flying anywhere much less to fucking florida right now). It just all sucks a lot cause she's the only adult family member that I ever felt had my back growing up, and it's weird cause I've kind of been mourning her for years already.

    I don't know.

My baby cat not yet two years old had to be rushed to the vet this emergency vet this morning when we found her struggling to breathe and barely able to stand. She passed away within an hour of us getting to the vet. Doctor suspects a blood clot caused by an underlying heart murmur. Hug your furry friends whenever you have the chance.

Is it true some parents make their kids pay rent to live at home with them? It almost sounded like a parody to me, but apparently it's true.

To complain for a second: goddamn is it harder to quit drinking than it is to quit smoking. Not only is alcohol a more addictive chemical than Nicotine, but it also has every factor of society going for it. Nearly every social function past 5 PM has an implied drinking aspect to it, and that is reinforced by every show, advertisement, song, etc. that deals with the topic. Nicotine does not have the kind of PR pressure that alcohol has behind it, despite coming from the same cloth. That being said, I'm also very lucky to be 2 weeks clean off nicotine (plus a few days).

Last homeless shelter is still standing. People camped out in the rain about it. They'll just tear it down whenever that tapers off. Media fallout from yesterday is reflecting really fucking bad on the cops. There hasn't been an actual conflict between cops and protestors like, ever here, there's a lot of public sympathy regarding the shelters that were torn down and the cops really showed their whole ass. Badges were removed and we had a spree killer last year who used a cop car and equipment as cover, they maced a 10 year old child who was with her mother, they didn't even come for the protest, they were trying to get a bus home and happened to be passing by. The public outrage is very encouraging but now a few dozen homeless people have lost sheds that were built and provided by a mutual aide org. This was all done the day after election day as well.
