There was an exchange of gunfire when a proud boy fired at counter protesters who returned fire. Nobody was injured but things are escalating still. That was on the 22nd. They're also about to see mass evictions in the middle of the on going pandemic just before winter.

I mean, why is every chud freaking out about Portland being the worst place in the world? Suddenly everyone is attacking portland for some reason and I don't really understand it because I don't even know what a Portland is lol

Do you remember the 90s? People were talking about getting piercings and tribal tattoos. People were singing about saving the planet and forming bands. There's a place where that idea still exists as a reality -- Portland. Remember when people were content to be unambitious. They sleep until 11am. Just hung out with their friends. They had no occupations whatsoever. Maybe work a couple hours a week at a coffee shop. Portland is a city where young people go to retire.

        spoiler

Seriously, Oregon was created as a white-only state. Oregon and Portland was historically racist and bad place. Then in the 00s it became hip to live there so everyone moved there from California and there was a lot of gentrification. Probably for a decade now the city has street fights between antifa and chuds. The Pacific Northwest of the US has lots of white nationalists and anti-state right wing extremists. There have been literal terrorist training camps there. Huge part of the militia movement in the 80s and 90s. Portland is this very liberal place surrounded by lots of chuds.

Is that also why chuds hate California so much? Because the cost of living is so high, many Californians are going to move to what they feel are "their" states, and what happened to Oregon (it's electorally a solid blue state because of one city) will happen to, say, Texas?

There are a lot of homeless people which chuds hyper fixate on if it's a liberal city because they are making the streets unclean.

Portland is an isolated cosmopolitan center in a state where it was literally illegal to be black until like 1940

It also has relatively few people the chuds are genuinely scared of. Ever notice that the chuds never do armed invasions of "hellhole" areas of cities where gun violence is relatively common and the people they'd face wouldn't be pasty noodle-armed glorified posters?

Thus it's a soft easy target and a place where they think they can have fun. They want to go own the bluehairs and make good social media content, not to die.

Portland is a super liberal city in the middle of one of the whitest most racist states in the country. They even frequently elect demsocs to local positions. The chuds hate them for this and also fixate on it as a component of their "antifa invaders" rhetoric. They go there and march around knowing that it has a strong anti-fascist tradition (being a progressive enclave in the Pacific Northwest). They also point to it as a land of lawlessness because of the clashes with police in anti-cop protests and loudly proclaim it is a failure of liberal policy.

And it works. They get to play victim to their base and spineless libs like Mayor Ted Wheeler will keep caving to them to prove they're not taking a side with the "violent antifa who are just as bad"

Listen to the Radio War Nerd episode with a dude who moved to rural Washington state and covered their freakout over the "Antifa bus" among other things. The US has been cultivating these types since at least Vietnam (free military training) compounded with neoliberal decline, hippie and religious shit, and the broader mythology the US tells itself.

Chuds love a pithy object of hate and melodrama.

Also Portland has some of the larger fights between chud groups and leftists.

Portland or Seattle will be where some of the first big skirmishes between armed leftists and fascists will be in the coming years.

Portland (and Seattle, but that's not relevant here) is a city that has internal politics divided between technocratic Warren-style libs and a vaguely-anarchist populist left. The urban Pacific NW is viewed by the rural PNW as imposing its politics onto the rest of those states, which are deeply reactionary, because at the state level, both WA and OR have a weak sort of popular front that has thus far simply kept reelecting libs and using the referendum processes of the states to push to the left of their elected officials (it's not impossible that WA gets single payer healthcare through an initiative in the next two years, for instance). As a result, reactionaries like to gather in these cities to attack minority communities and generally try to terrorize the cities and get them to spend a lot of money on security, while producing propaganda about how dangerous those cities are.

In reality, Portland is fairly safe, even if its cops are complete psychopaths. It was one of the centers of resistance during the uprising for Black Lives, which is used by the chuds to pretend the whole city was somehow burned down (it was not in any way). This then turned into the myth that antifascists were lighting fires in rural Oregon during last year's brutal fire season. The whole thing is batshit and the worst part of Portland are its shitty, racist police with the first police union in the US and its insanely high cost of living.

Anteefa is rioting, according to mainstream takes.

Chud groups are entering and harassing, antifa et Al are being cool per usual, cops are "standing back" because they're not getting paid their protection money.

Oregon was founded on a principle of racial exclusion, it's not surprising that its material state is a hotbed for fascist development. The cities become a source of some actual left militancy in response. Neither has much sway over the relatively left liberal status quo. But these groups are clashing in the streets regardless.
