Is it true? Is it propaganda? If it's true then Why are they doing this?

It's true and it's bad. Don't twist yourself into knots trying to defend it, just take the L and move on. The CCP isn't going to collapse because a Western leftist said banning femboys is bad, and making excuses for it is a bad look and often :cringe:

Yeah, I agree, in the end it’s meaningless, you shouldn’t participate in stan culture (ironic, considering) for china, they doing some cringe socially and in foreign policy, plus it doesn’t matter unless your party program is carbon copy every chinese policy

Boomer politicians being boomer politicians, from my understanding the younger generations in China are much more socially progressive. It's dumb and bad but it's probably not as bad as western media will make it out to be to distract from how hostile we are to lgbtq people.

I think the rules are guided more at like wealthy types, not everyday normal workers. Like it's not even a "you're going to prison" thing, it's literally just "no wealthy people who get plastic surgery to look like their favorite musicians allowed on TV". Which I think is more directed at the cult of personality part of that dynamic and not the effeminate/non-cisgender part.

Otherwise I feel like it would have been worded a lot more clearly and directly.

If I remember correctly, the “effeminacy” thing China has been gunning against isn’t about gender expression as much as “idol culture”. I’ll see if I can find the threads I was reading on that from a queer activist in China.

As is typical, the western media happily jumped on trying to use this as a propaganda angle. The thread I was reading had some criticism of other policies because China isn’t a utopia, but it was pretty clear on the intent there.

Edit: Found it. Thread on the topic from our comrades over at r/GenZedong.

Another twitter thread on the topic.

    Hexbear thread from Alaskaball

….sounds like…cope? I dunno maybe I’m just a dumbass but that argument just seems to go from ‘it’s all lies’ and then triangulates back to ‘it’s pretty much what you think it is.’

China has plenty of its own social issues with queer / LGBTQ+ rights (eg gay marriage still being illegal) and is not always going to line up with our own cultural indicators either.

Understanding the context involved with a policy like this allows us to critique it more clearly than the very generalized take on it we’re seeing from most western press.

Given our media’s vested interest in attacking China from any angle they can, I think it’s healthy to not take these stories at face value when they’re first presented to us.

Our country is trying very hard to manufacture consent for this latest cold war and none of us are immune to propaganda.

what you said sounds kind of condescending tbh i don’t get the thread of logic behind the context itself and I’m not sure why you jumped to consent manufacturing because a policy seems pretty bad.

Not trying to be condescending, sorry if it came across that way. I realize we both know our media/journalism is filtered through the US state. The majority of the articles on this topic when it first showed up a week or so ago were extremely narrow in their reporting and alarmist, which is what raised a red flag for me.

I’m discussing manufacturing consent in terms of the general aims of the American state when it comes to the information pushed towards us. We’ve all seen examples of that in American journalism, especially over the last 5 years around China.

They're targeting the industry that markets a very specific kind of guy to appeal (typically) to young straight women, one that's basically a K-pop male idol stereotype.

I am not knowledgeable enough about the details to say a whole lot other than it's not simply an anti-LGBTQ thing and that gender/sexuality tropes in China are different from but still as complex as those in The West.

To understand what's happening we really do need to hear from some Chinese comrades.

"Sissy" appears to be an extremely imprecise translation. Western media takes advantages of ambiguities in translating Chinese to paint China in as negative a light as possible.

I think it's some sort of anti-boy-band culture war thing. They seem to view boy band "stan" culture to be toxic and are trying to get rid of it like they're doing with online games for kids. Don't really know enough about it to tell how much is accurate, but I think that's the narrative

I'd correct slightly that by saying that this country's set up so that there's not zero but exactly ONE thing an American can do in response, which is offering support for international bloodshed. While by no means are we a democratic country, a complete lack of popular support still makes everything more of a hassle when it comes to waging war. That's why the state still bothers to manufacture consent.

Stop tailing bourgeoise media and if you care about Lgbt people in china, you should study the culture on its own terms instead of projecting your own alienation onto China where it becomes a utopia and fixes all the problems we have here. What do Chinese ordinary people think? This is an issue that many Chinese people have an opinion on and it is your duty to protect China from imperialist attacks.

Ok I'll be the bad guy: yes, the Chinese are using their social controls to reduce bourgois influence on their society, which includes bourgois homonormativity (recuperated and defanged token support of gay visibility). Homosexuality and Marxism did not always go hand and hand, people who blamed things like cuban internment of guys on machismo completely overlooked something called "bourgeois excesses". It's the typical "manly man labor vs decadent office soyboy with french aristocrat facepaint" shit, and that's ignoring the push for austere orderliness that gives a confucian character to China's version of the new soviet man. The boomers remember this and didn't have to get woke like Castro did when he lost his russian sugar daddies and had to make himself more palitable to Canada and Europe.

Yes, I'm certain that the intention is to foster a revolutionary proletarian queerness. When your 'critical support' has you sounding like a faux-woke fascist, maybe just take the L ffs?

AFAIK it seems aimed at boy band trends, but yeah, it's generally true and it sucks.

It's fine to criticize some decisions made by the Chinese government, doesn't mean you suddenly have to love the CIA or whatever. If your ideology doesn't let you even acknowledge they might have flaws, that's not a good thing.
