Between this and The NY Times article that says we don’t really need that much drinking water, I’m starting to suspect the media is prepping our expectations
Bold of you to assume we'd be issued them instead of being mandated to purchase
Haha sorry all those conveniences we bribed you with so you would help us murder the planet are going away! Here’s an article on why that’s a good thing.
Ah yep sounds like my Tuesday. Same thing happened Wednesday, but my parents dancing on my grave was a little less enthusiastic that day, probably because the novelty had worn off.
But you try and tell the young people today that... and they won't believe ya'.
You got a whole cup of sulphuric acid? Man you were really living high on the hog, the only thing my family could afford was rubbing lye into my eyes to wake up in the morning.
i like a cold house and warm clothes, but also, i highly doubt theyre publishing this to boost sweater sales lol
The main reason to publish this is to harvest rageclicks from pissed-off poor zoomers and the secondary reason is to make boomer subscribers who eat half a cow per week feel ok about deliberately setting the planet on fire.
The weird thing is that I'm pretty sure most Europeans already throw on a sweater and turn turn the heat. It's expensive to heat a home there. Who wrote this?
It's a UK newspaper, so I'm kind of surprised they ever had that luxury to begin with? I know their climate is relatively mild, but natural gas is pricy in Europe and UK homes are famously very poorly insulated.
I've never yet met a fucking boomer that didn't appall me with their HVAC energy consumption.
This article would be completely true if it were exactly the same but with gen z replaced with boomers. It's like it was written on opposite day or something
Look at what's going on with energy prices in Europe. They're literally manufacturing consent for rationing (or extremely high bills and no government support) to come.
Seriously. I would make do every day with at most a fan pointed at myself, but I go to an older person's house and it's like stepping onto another planet.
I love cozy clothes, so I'm always annoyed when I go to a friend's home during the winter and instantly break into sweat because they're wearing shorts in January. So I recognize the sinister messaging, but I'm still gonna have to agree.
78° in summer: shorts indoors
58° in winter: those same shorts indoors
Millenials need to hold a formal ceremony for passing the torch of ruining society onto the zoomers
The ruling class will work to lessen their footprint too, right?
...right?
This is just good advice though heating a whole house when you only need to put a jumper on is very wasteful
If all were required to cut back according to the needs of the many, sure. But you know this is just them telling poor people “hey you can freeze a little bit!” while the wealthy leave the heaters on in their vacant mansions for months on end.
Who said anything about freezing just put a jumper on instead of turning on the heating it's literally not even an inconvenience
“Everyone could see their breath in the morning” sounds a bit colder than just putting on a jumper. Yes, conservation is good but this type of conservation can’t solve the problem. It strike me more as just blaming people.
Man I've literally slept outside being able to see your breath because you're cold is not a big deal
I’ve gone days without food but I wouldn’t recommend this as a societal guideline for people. People have different comfort levels as well, maybe you’re more tolerant of cold.
The article is only talking about being slightly cold though it's not dangerous at all it's at most being mildly uncomfortable for a while
I just can’t abide a society telling me, “Sorry you have to shiver in the cold — heating your apartment is a luxury we can’t afford” then in the next breath say “Now, watch this new show about people who race Ferraris!”
We’re not going to conserve our way out of this, imo. This is just the rulers telling us to be more miserable during the decline.
This just sounds like you pointing to something wasteful someone else is doing as an excuse to do something wasteful yourself
excessively heating your home is bad, but burning fuel for warmth is literally what got civilization started and we should make sure everyone is able to heat their homes to a reasonably comfortable level.
Did not expect to see an anti heating take on this site.
Guess it's only a matter of time before the "do not become addicted to the water" joke is no longer satire.
What difference does it make if I go to bed cold for months on end? I avoid consuming a certain amount of energy. But if we’re just going to keep consuming and polluting and killing — it’s hard for me to see what I’ve accomplished by this act of conservation.
If there were an apparatus to make sure these efforts counted for something, I’d be more on board. But I don’t think there is.
What do you mean go to bed cold that is literally the purpose of a bed to keep you warn at night. Buy a blanket as well if you are still cold
I’ve been cold enough to need a bed and a heater both. Ok so maybe my bed is warm but the rest of the apartment is still cold — my argument doesn’t change much in this situation.
If you think that's cold I refuse to believe you've ever been outside during winter
Meanwhile my apartment gets so hot in the winter I have to open up the windows or even sometimes use the AC. I think it's because I'm surrounded by people who do use their heaters
That "we" sure is doing a lot of work. Of course this comes from a country where a literal monarch surrounded by millions of pounds worth of gold will tell people that they need to live within their means without any sense of irony.
