There are at least four types of libertarians:
- Right-wingers who don't really believe any of the stuff, but are trying to court libertarians;
- Republicans who aren't very political, and who default to the standard GOP talking points, but who have one or two pet issues that break from party orthodoxy (usually because they have personal experience with these issues; see pot and LGBT rights);
- People who actually believe that shit; and
- Lost puppies who dislike both major parties and credulously believe the most generous portrayal of libertarians.
Groups 1 and 2 are lost causes who either are currently fash or will go there at the drop of a hat and Group 3 is like five people. Only Group 4 is potentially reachable.
I was group 4 before I became a lib before I became still a lib.
Yup, libertarians have been around long enough to catch plenty of people who just want some sort of third-party option.
I feel like there's a similar spread among libs and standard chuds, but with libs its a lot more of 3 and 4
