I've mostly stayed out of the Ukraine discourse, but I have to chime in. Without doxxing myself, let me just say that I had the most traumatizing experience of my life in Donetsk. Really loved being the target of anti gay slurs from a couple hundred people for an evening. Nothing will change for queer people in the Donbas regardless of who is in charge, it will suck.
I’m so sorry that happened to you and I’m glad you’re safe now. Bigotry is a huge fucking issue across Eastern Europe and it’s extremely gross hearing people talk like it would somehow be different just because there are more Russian troops in that region now.
Oh my god there was an absolutely fawning piece in the Swedish papers today about "anonymous anti-russian desinformation elves" who bragged about telling the truth and fighting against the "Russian trolls" and the entire fucking time in the piece they never bring up the fact that "hey we have no idea who these guys are or if their counter-propaganda is real and verifiable".
Just regular propaganda playbook shit, anonymous sources and defectors = total bullshit, completely made up.

Kharkiv is apparently chill about LGBT people (as it goes in Eastern Europe) and when I visited I saw a lesbian couple and some transrights grafitti, but it's nothing officially endorsed by the government obviously. Also neo-nazi groups like to target LGBT rallies. I imagine there are similarly LGBT semi-tolerant attitudes in Moscow though, being a such a huge and diverse city.
St Petersburg is where you want to go if you are LGBT in Russia the city's culture pretty young and "western." But it's not like you are going to get executed anywhere else though you might be harassed by assholes. Headline is insane because there are plenty of LGBT people living in Russia and they aren't being targeted for killings by the evil Putin.
I found some Anarcho-Communist graffiti and posters in my grandma's town in far-eastern Poland. That doesn't really mean anything for the general quality of life or support for the left and other progressive causes tbh
Yeah, I'm sure all the countries that are concerned definitely treat their LGBTQ+ citizens well

Essentially, according to EuphoricZombieBoi, this whole crisis in Ukraine was the US strengthening its position among its allies and further undermining Russia. That they're ramping up propaganda against Russia is to convince US and European domestic populations of the necessity of NATO. The US state is playing a long game of splintering its rivals of Russia and China to ensure continued global hegemonic domination; the trough must always be full and overflowing.
Sources also claim Putin is kicking every Ukrainian puppy he can get his hands on, and having cute cats summarily executed.
