I think it's disconcerting as a white, American born guy how many people who choose to immigrate here (aside from refugees and the most desperate) are reactionary "gusanos" of their respective nations. I think it throws a wrench into the whole "respecting immigrants" narrative. It creates a lot of cognitive dissonance to me and I'm sure a lot of others feel similar.

That's not an accident, that's an intentional choice on behalf of Western governments. You basically can't immigrate to the US without being a rabid anticom, doubly so if you're coming from a country that has a notable socialist presence.

I think there's also a selection bias at play. Anybody who would move to the US from a country that has even close to a similar standard of living is much more likely to be some type of right wing shithead, simply by virtue of wanting to live in the US

that checks out I grew up with a guy who was always talking about murdering Muslims and he's the only person I know who moved to America

We love to live in a country that attracts the absolute worst people from all over the world, don't we folks? We looooove it

I'm actually a bit worried about him cause last I heard of him he was ranting about black people and then bought a gun and went off grid

honestly, at least getting all the assholes in one place could have certain strategic benefits

yeah, the great thing is the law also has stuff about "totalitarian" parties which ought to also include nazis, except I'm guessing the amount of times the law has actually been applied to them is pretty low (if it's even above zero)

Don't fall in to that trap. Lots of immigrants are just regular people with no strong ideological affiliation. For every Gusano there are a ton of Somali people who came here as war refugees.

There have been lots of good responses here and I want to clarify that I have no ill will towards immigrants. I have been involved in the fight against an ICE detention center in my area. It's just interesting to see how their are often vocal groups of immigrants who have very reactionary beliefs and it's frustrating because they by no means represent the majority of their country. However, as pointed out by other commentors, these voices are usually boosted by western media.

Australian SAS also used a confederate flag as a signal for American helicopters to land

Lol I know the Confederate flag goes way back in the us military but somehow this takes me by surprise. Most on brand shit I can think of though: Murican helo coming in, roll out the beacon!

one thing I think we will see is further veneration of Ukrainian National mythos in the wider west. That means further vilification of the USSR, double-Genocide theory & holodomor nonsense. Not to mention just outright support for Nazi collaborators.

This war is going to turn everyone in the west to even more outright fascists than they were before, it’s amazing how war has the ability to do that to Liberals

They probably wouldn't even need to shoot a new one, just re-cut it, add some references to the current conflict, and collect your Oscar

I hate those interviews with holodomor survivors crying about their friends/families dying. They claim the Soviets collectivized the food and sold it to other countries instead of distributing it to the local citizens, leaving them to starve. Eventually the farmers started burning their crops come collection time out of spite. Always set in the local graveyard.

Bastards should have gotten the wall, instead they got to live into old age and smear Stalin's good name.

The same local Ukranians interviewed in the first days of the war and the cbc didn't call them out as nazi collaborators when they admitted it?? Say it isn't so

The local :reddit-logo: thread on this story has some surprisingly good takes being voted up: https://www.reddit.com/r/vancouver/comments/tf4et1/local_ukrainians_outraged_as_soviet_flag_flies/i0upux9/

That sub is generally super reactionary so that's refreshing to see.
