Gulag? Why bother. He's bound to have some heavy duty nylon rope onboard to tie that thing to a dock, and I see plenty of trees in the background

There are a few things in life you think you want, but in reality you just want your friend to have it so you can borrow it from time to time.

A boat is one of those items. As is a time share. And a backyard pool.

Rented a house that had one. The maintenance is manageable but its certainly not cheap.

Yeah I've heard of having to make sure the chlorine levels are good. I'd imagine there's mechanical stuff that can go wrong or stuff that gets trapped in the vacuum. Did you have fun parties at least? Or get to swim in it a lot for exercise?

I had some decent parties. My dog loved it. And yeah, it was cool to come home from work and do laps. But, if you live anywhere with seasons, each season outside of Summer is an added expense, and time consuming. Pollen. Leaves. Covering the pool for Winter.

            Then there's the plumbing.

And then there's the regular chemistry.

So yeah, it's a balancing act. When we moved I pretty much swore off pools forever. I have a hot tub my friend gave me and I installed and it's like 5% the level of effort to keep it going versus a pool.

Side note: Hot tubs are free on CL all the time. They're actually super easy to install, even if you do everything to code. Highly recommended.

It was described as "Having a backyard pool won't increase your property value" which I think says it all.

Idk I've heard that it's mixed. Like if you're selling some buyers wont' even look at your house anymore because they don't want to deal with taking care of the pool. On the other hand you'll attract buyers that DO want a pool and they'll pay more. But yeah IDK I haven't seen numbers so this is just anecdotal and you could be right.

Definitely agree, I very shortly looked into what it would cost to get a low end boat I could just take out every now and then and it actually pissed me off how expensive it would be. Especially since I'd have to keep it in storage. I thought about getting a fixer upper and realized it would require more tools than I got and more space than I have lol. Kinda a bummer but I do have a cousin who has a boat and go out with him maybe once or twice a year and honestly that's good enough for me

Comparing a pool to a time share isn't a connection I was expecting but it makes so much sense.

We hate the boater because we want to be the boater. Being on a boat rules, it’s just that you have to sell your soul in order to afford one, which means most boat owners suck as people.

I remember reading an ancient blog post about some anarchists who basically just stole a sailboat after Katrina. They just found one that was abandoned in a canal in like Florida, yoinked it, fixed it up, and went sailing around the Caribbean. I think they visited Florida and a couple of other places.

One of my brothers worked a couple seasons on an ocean/great lakes educational sailboat. The crust punks who signed on taught him to roll his own smokes, had photocopied pamphlets of all the train routes for train hopping (which is a felony to possess apparently), and stood up to chud navy men when they were harassing my bro for being Trans. Uphold crusty sailor aktion.

You don’t like being on a boat and just riding around? You could argue it’s wasteful but it’s a fun experience.

I took a boating safety course once and the instructor was very insistent to point out that one gallon of gas in the bilge is roughly equivalent to a quarter stick of dynamite.

Rented a boat and split the costs with my friends, it was fun to cruise around and watch people get DUIs on their jet skis and boats. The Trump boat parade was very unsettling, though.

I've only ever been on those little single prop tin boats that feel like it's going to be crushed like a beer can hitting the waves too hard but it is extremely fun. Boating is ridiculously expensive if you want a smoother experience. Especially if you got no where to keep the boat besides storage places.

      There's a cabin in there.

I once had a fantasy where I bought a boat like this and lived on it. Then I went down to the dock sort of near where I lived and researched typical small boat maintenance. That's when I realized there's a reason why only rich people have boats: keeping these things seaworthy is insane. You'd be better off buying an RV and RVs are made like shit.

sailboats are much easier to maintain, less moving parts and such, until you get big enough and its basically both a sailboat and motorboat then it sucks again.

In a boat this size there are beds, possibly a tiny toilet, and maybe even somewhere to cook.

It's basically a camper van but for water.

No. That's tiny, at most it has a little deck bench area in the front. The perspective makes it look bigger because it's closer to the camera than the truck but you can tell by the size of the seat/steering wheel it's not all that big.

Still the name of the boat is :gulag: worthy

Need high powered electric boats. Alternatively wakeboarding behind a sailboat would be pretty rad.
