Sappho was a renowned poet from ancient Greece, specifically the island of Lesbos.
Sappho is notable for being synonymous with same-sex romance (the words sapphic and lesbian come from her name and the name of her homeland), and remains one of the most recognizable names in modern times among ancient greek artists. Despite her significant fame both then and now, very little of Sappho's poetry actually survived, and historical records about her are similarly sparse.
In fact, just one complete poem of Sappho's has survived to this day. The remainder of her works that can be read today have been pieced together by experts in various disciplines, relying on other records from around the same time and region, oral traditions, and much more. Some of these were mostly complete, while others attempts at recreating/restoring a poem start with as little as a few words from the original source. In terms of her appearance, we suspect her hair may have been dark. Nothing else is known. Portraits of Sappho are reimaginings or interpretations of the famed poet.
In some ways, her continued renown--in spite of having her art lost to history--can be seen as a testament to the strength of her reputation and her skill as a poet. At the same time, the academic study around Sappho can also be seen as a fascinating microcosm of how we interact with art and history. The historical record is never seen with the (metaphorical) naked eye; sometimes we are simply more conscious of the (metaphorical) lens than others.

My dad tried prompting my mom into saying she's proud of me for graduating and she just ignored him lmao. She really is my biggest hater
What the fuck
I'm sorry you gotta live with ppl like that :meow-hug:
She invited my stepbrother to my graduation dinner, knowing I dont want him there, and is trying and will succeed in making it all about him. We were talking about the dinner the other day and she started talking about his 8th graduation because she hates when things are about me so bad :yes-honey-left:
What the actual fuck
Your family is so awful for no reason
Btw I'm proud of you graduating since your family isn't
As someone who struggled to graduate, I'm legit proud of you, that shit is not easy :red-fist:
I know this probably isn't the same as it'd be coming from your mom, but as someone who nearly didn't graduate HS and flunked out of both uni and college, I am proud of you for graduating
:penguin-love:
As someone that couldn't finish university because of health issues, I'm really proud that you graduated, that's a real hard accomplishment, be proud!
An old lady walked up to me and my gf and said we were a cute couple :bloomer: ty old not-homophobic lady
Have at it, nerds

Does anyone get highs and lows from social interaction? Like you feel great during and then terrible after, sort of like alcohol? Is this normal?
yea if i do a lot of social interaction i need like a recovery day. eventually ill just full on drop out of society for a couple weeks
Oh god t did I say something cringe did I talk to much oh crap I wasn't even listening to them and now I forgot what they said
I googled this and I'm getting a bunch of results about "introvert hangovers."
A lot of people get migraines on weekends, when the body decides a stressful period is over and it can let loose with all the suppressed pain of the week. Or some such. It sounds like you might be stressed during social interaction.
Huh, interesting, I never thought of it as a over-stimulation thing since as long as I don't stop socializing, I keep feeling great. I'm more like what /u/sourquincelog is describing.
msg was a truly incredible invention
incredible that they managed to make a chemical that causes mild headaches, but only in white people
I watched a digital theatre event with my partner last night. She said it was about climate change so I'm already dreading the terminal :LIB: takes.
I realize it's a hip hop/slam musical :kombucha-disgust:
The artist starts talking about how climate change is class violence :heated-gamer-moment:
The artist calls climate neocolonial as they talk about disproportionate effects borne by the global south :soviet-hmm:
The artist directs responsibility squarely at the ownership class :marx-ok:
At the end of the show the artist gives the screen to climate activists working in his area where they each individually discuss their movements and actions including one who explicitly says they organize in the spirit of Fred Hampton :fred-hampton:
The final music number calls for a worker revolution as a solution :lenin-shining:
I gotta say my partner's mom was silent as hell after it ended lol
Yall talk about they/them pussy yet not a word on they/them cock, curious :very-smart:
Omg what's they/them cock? I'm a visual learner btw :hyperflush:
We stan a messy queen. Just being hot, holding girls hands, and losing poems. all day, all night, queen
People are sexist af. I'm watching a bloc party live set where they played their first album in full. Their new drummer Louise played the set perfectly and adds backing vocals here and there - which their old drummer didn't do! Of course there's comments saying how she's just not the same. Even when someone's like "she killed it tho" people are like ehhhh no not the same
:bruh: it's the same drumming fill for fill. Misogynist motherfuckers just can't handle a woman doing as well, and in this case more, than a man
Tonnes of cis het dudes still think listening to female pop artists is "gay" or some shit, society is still sexist af
I HATE CARS, I HATE CARS, I HATE CARS
And you know what? People who drive hate cars too
Out of peanut butter but I have plenty of bread in my work snacks drawer. About to make a toast sandwich.
God, finance news in unbelievable.

How is it not brought up that roe being overturned is directly the Obama admins fault for failing to get Garland confirmed? Everyone saying it was the voters fault for failing Hillary is missing the point that the stakes for that election were set by Obama’s failures
