If I was the transportation secretary I would simply not have had my flight cancelled.

Buttigieg was forced to drive from Washington D.C. to New York

Due to the increase in summer travel, the Transportation Security Administration recommends that travelers arrive at least three hours before departure.

    Drive time = 3 hours, 50 minutes

Flight time plus TSA arrival bloat = 1 hour, 10 minutes + 3 hours = 4 hours, 10 min (not to mention to/from the airport) :amerikkka-clap:

Unless this is a bold environmentalist ploy by :pete: to gradually ban air traffic by making it so bad that no one will bother flying :think-about-it:

Poor Booty was forced at gunpoint to drive three hours. How dare you insult the first rodent to ever hold a position in the US government.

What the fuck? Amtrak actually has their own high speed train from New York to DC (not as high speed as Japan, for example, but still), using their own rail that they don't have to share with freight, that runs reliably. Why would he drive?

He didn't even take the train? That train is often faster than both and this mf is transportation secretary

Just take Amtrak you fucking wankers. It goes from downtown DC to downtown NYC in half the time and you don't even have to pay for parking.

It's because the only way their profits can increase is by packing more and more people like sardines and make the amenities worse and worse, and they can't just add more cars like they can with trains.

100% this. I just had my first overseas flight in 10 years with a bigger airline, and the seats were insanely uncomfortable. so much smaller. like what you used to get on those budget airlines 10 years ago that hopped an hour.

except now you get the same seat for like 6 hours.

          ...

also, in the "post" COVID era the "critical staffing shortages" resulted in multiple mechanical failures, a fuel leak, and planes sitting out on the runway waiting for a gate for an extra 90-120 minutes.

I swear, I am never taking a plane again. if I go overseas, I am taking a slow boat on a cargo ship and will blow a week on transport.

It's not that big an inconvenience, they can just hop on the high-speed rail and be there in approx. the same amount of time.

Planes can be appropriate, however every flight under 500 miles should be illegal.

nah it should be an emissions per passenger mile thing and knowing the US, short-haul electric planes will be viable before we can build rail.

also muh rural alaskan villages but i'll assume you meant like minneapolis to chicago.

Don't need to actually build much rail to radically expand rail passenger service. Aside from that, though just take a damn bus! Buses are nice too. There will not be practical electrical planes in our lifetime. Too much energy density, and battery tech is extremely heavy.

i've been on long-haul busses and america manages to fuck those up too. Rather fly in a pre-9/11 security environment than take greyhound at any time in history.

the electric plane dorks are targeting short haul flights and 5 30 years from now if we're not all dead and the sulfur batteries work they'll be doing safety certs.

Its even funnier that they tell him to fly commercial, rather than charter a flight on their jet that is just sitting on the tarmac.

Who's COVID? I'm unscheduled absences in some work groups.

Only if there was this way to move thousands of people at one time on a long tube like thing. That maybe is separated into karts that your can walk up and down on and that you don't need to worry about weight. One kart that is specifically for dining and drinking. And some others for sleeping. Maybe even a game kart type one.

    🤷

We could take all the autonomous self-driving cars that are driving the same direction, and instead save on processing power by merging them into much larger vehicles linked on a single central guidance system. That way only the lead vehicle needs to be piloted! And think of the cost savings!

I’m flying in a day and absolutely terrified. Already get all the anxiety boxes checked and now I have to think about air traffic controller shortage … I would so take a train but they are so darn slow and expensive in this country :agony-wholesome:
