How funny. On this issue the DC dems are to the right of the fucking Pentagon.

So the military is going to continue to provide abortions regardless of the SCROTAL ruling. The Commander & Chief, head of the military, has basically thrown up his hands and said they have no plans to do anything about it. The military is acting without the chain of command.

One step closer to the military retiring a president and taking over themselves.

I think the libs would be fine if the military took over after Biden's term in 2024. Let Tired Old Joe have his fun. It's his term. But later the libs would be shocked (Shocked!) when the Pentagon and the GOP run things together.

      I creeped myself out.

This was something talked about under Trump around the election. The military came out and said that there would be a peaceful transition of power. Implying that they would step in if Trump decided to go off the rails. As the culture war shit heats up more and more, the military still has to contend with practical concerns. They need women in the military because they need as many people as they can get due to dwindling enlistments. They can't have soldiers dropping out due to pregnancy. Of course they have to continue abortions regardless of ideology. So they can't tolerate the actions of fash on this issue, even if they agree with it. They have to step up and take matters into their own hands because the ideology is making a mess.

Both parties would love military leaders. They both wank over the military. They love competence porn. They both feel the military is on their side. As more crises unfold and the typical party political solutions do nothing or just make huge mess, there will be some demand for an "adult in the room" to take over.

The real bad part is if we transition to a military-ran state and then the fascists purge the military, replacing them with their own people.

That would be on brand for the dems...

"The Pentagon is taking over! We are moving out of the frying pan! I repeat - we are moving out of the frying pan!..."

          And right into the fire.

Or they just have one of their own run for President. Wouldn't be the first time a current military official became president.

Wasn't Eisenhower pretty much the last president who was overall competent? Maybe that's a bit too broad of a statement to mean anything

It depends on what you're measuring the presidents on. Those in power would probably say Obama was very much a competent president.

I was going to jokingly suggest that in the future the only way to get access to your human rights will be to enlist, and then I remembered that’s already sort of true for many people re: healthcare and education.

    Let me get this straight:

The United States Military has just come out and stated that they are intervening in the legal process by refusing to recognize laws

This... This is the definition a coup, isn't it? The military apropos of nothing has just started acting as the executive branch of government outside of their legal jurisdiction with no legal justification or right for said authority beyond "We have all of the guns"

This country is rapidly decaying and sliding into fascism way faster than I would have thought

EDIT: Okay, I now understand that this only covers military bases on U.S. soil, and presumably the personnel that live there. This does not affect the whole country

Seems like military bases are considered federal land, so they can do whatever they want since abortion isn't banned federally, it's just up to the states. Apparently the female service members will have to pay for the procedure, though.

Kind of like when I could carry weed across the street of my public college campus in a city with decriminalization, but as soon as I stepped on campus the state cops could bust me.

Internal border wars are fun and certainly healthy.

Edit: I'd also appreciate it if libs stopped saying JUST BUILD CLINICS ON RESERVATIONS.

      Not your land, shitheads.

no, Tricare only covers abortions at military medical facilities for rape, incest or woman's life in danger. They are saying that they will still continue doing that regardless of state laws but for anything else, they will have to seek treatment elsewhere, or now out of state.

Female troops seeking the procedure already face steep hurdles to getting the care they need: They cannot get abortions at military medical facilities, & federal law also prevents troops from using their Tricare health insurance to cover the cost of the procedures at private facilities, unless the life of the mother is at risk due to the Hyde Amendment,”

You do not gotta hand it to 'em. Military only does the absolute bare minimum and is only committed to continuing to do the absolute bare minimum for female troops and dependents.

Aren’t most state laws not recognized on military bases? Usually Boring shit like sales tax, marriage, and blue laws though.

So this is it right? This will destroy the US as we know it if the pentagon comes at odds with the federal government.

Military bases don't have to follow state laws, they never have. So this is more making a statement then any new policy

yes but it gives cover to states that refuse to extradite. this is very much the start of balkanization.

this was predictable from the moment almost all of the generals publicly told trump they wouldn't help his coup. ofc there's a bunch of other institutions that are fully on board with the GOP clerical fascism, namely all non-federal cops. DHS also came out in support of trump when he contested the election. part of the balkanization will be that all of those overfunded, armed-to-the-teeth institutions the US has either pick sides or even become independent actors. note that the airforce also issued a memo they wouldn't enforce teen transition bans on their bases and in schools for their troops' kids. i also think this isn't due to "woke imperialism" or any other ideological reason, they just know that the hogs are completely off their rocker and that it's impossible to maintain a functional state with them in charge.

    CW: sexual violence

I think this is simply a logistical requirement to keep the military running smoothly with all the rape that goes on in there.
