This guy through the ages:
“You married a person of a different race, that makes you a criminal.”
“You tried to run away from your owner, that’s making the community unsafe because it’s illegal”
“Being a Jew is breaking the law. When you’re in a concentration camp, the community is safer.”
“Being a Jew is breaking the law. When you’re in a concentration camp, the community is safer.”
Good chance that they believe this unironically and want it to be true again.
It's reddit, so there's a high chance it's indeed a literal child lol
Once the general call for all liberals to present themselves at the wall rings out this guy will be the first in line with no coercion, so there's that at least :meow-floppy:
People like this are why we don’t just need another Stalin. We need a century of Stalins. We need an entire cohort of living memory fearing the gulag to erase this bullshit.
i don't usually point left cop-brain out but like in this specific instance how exactly do you think a more refined state apparatus of criminalization and punishment is going to cure people of worship of state violence lmao like
The point is that the violence needs to be turned towards them to drive their evil out of the population. Moreover, it isn't more refined, just targeted at a more useful group to hurt. We can use roughly the same mechanisms in place now, just change what behavior constitutes "illegal"
ATTENTION CITIZENS IT IS NOW ILLEGAL TO BELIEVE THAT LAWS ARE A MORAL END IN THEMSELVES like do you hear yourselves
Re-education won't work without punishment. These guys will also go out of their way to target groups they think are criminals in some way, such as immigrants and minorities. If the states not on their side they might still be violent.
I'm saying it won't work at all because the method of teaching directly contradicts the lesson. If you believe in "re-education" by force, then you fundamentally agree with the redditor that laws are the foundation of communities, that violating laws makes communities more dangerous, and that enforcing them makes communities safer. Like you have to grapple with this contradiction of state communism if you're saying shit like "we'll use the same mechanism capitalists use now" like what do you think the DotP is? Like is it a radical break from current modes of state administration or is it just the same thing but with good people hurting the bad people?
I'm not agreeing with this redditor, but if you just told every American "hey there's no laws now" lots of terrible things would happen because of how reactionary this country is. It's not just the millionaires and billionaires we will need to take out, but a lot of cops and other right wing freaks. DotP will be a fundamental different way of governing, my point was if you put in communists as elected officials now somehow they could still improve the quality of life for minorities in this country by rounding up and re-education reactionaries. If we don't re-educate them by any means necessary, the only alternative is that they kill us or we kill them.
if someone believes you should obey the law because it is the law, and that makes them a reactionary, who exactly do you determine is breaking the law by being a reactionary? I'm not even attacking authoritarianism as such here, I'm just saying it's ill equipped to deal with the attitude presented in the screenshot.
I've spent a while thinking about this one, and you make a fair point. I guess ultimately I can't make someone think, but if benefits of being a critically thinking adult don't entice them punishment might. Past that I don't know what we could do.
He's full of shit. The reason he thinks that it is a good idea to punish people for smoking weed is not that it says so in some law. The reason it makes him feel "unsafe" is that smoking weed is associated with the people he doesn't like; young people, poor people, ethnic minorities etc.
All of these law and order fetichists are only on board with the police state as long as the law targets the people they feel superior to. They turn anarchists the moment they get as much as a parking ticket themselves.
To fascists it's not about the corruption of law, but of purity. They don't care when their own politicians lie or accept bribes - their politicians are on the side of the in-group.
the rule of law applies to every crime a white middle class suburban person could not see themselves commit and only those
oh he's just from that planet where they wanted to kill wil wheaton for breaking a planter.
Jaywalking being a crime is so absurd. Land of the free except if you step there.
There's a whole complex history behind it. When cars started to be a thing there were large numbers of pedestrian casualties because, obviously, streets are for pedestrians, trolleys, and horse carriages. Trolleys are easy to avoid and horses did cause a lot of accidents but, well, they walk at like 5-6mph. Cars were new and caused a great deal of disruption and no little amount of death.
Well, in typical American style car companies and drivers associations decided to shift the blame from the car drivers to the dead pedestrians. They lobbied for laws making it illegal to walk in the street and set off the whole process of car culture taking over American cities.
Literally an example of private industry having a direct influence on politics
Car makers didn't want to have to do anything about all the people getting killed by drivers who were driving too fast and too recklessly so they started a propaganda campaign to get politicians to ban the act of walking on streets
and of course it went down easy because the criminal legal system is always looking for pretexts to dole out violence
Jaywalking tbh can be quite dangerous though. I've had guys just walk out on a 4 lane highway to cross the street with traffic. People getting actual citations or being thrown in jail is obviously ridiculous but also don't jaywalk unsafely
Seems the problem is the 4 lane highway in addition to egoistic drivers not the jaywalking.
Imho it is no business of the state to police risky behavior like that, else it ought to outlaw meat, tobacco, oil, deep frying, roofing and ladders. I would like to have safe systems of transportation (see Netherland biking and pedestrian infrastructure) but after having spent some time in New Dheli I believe that even on high ways car drivers could drive much more safely if they would focus on the pedestrians and just reduce their speed instead of acting like all the space is theirs forever.
He only did that because a rogue SHIELD agent dosed him with mind-control drugs!
Yes, this was a real comic book storyline
Yeah. It's great. I rewatched it a couple of years ago and "as a leftist" the way writers treat Britta's attempts at activism is very revealing of writers' brainworms.
Haven't rewatched the full show, but from what I recall it was a pretty good takedown of liberals who just complain about things then don't do anything about it.
That's how it felt fifteen years ago, but now, I dunno, it just reads like smug lib nihilism. Like one of the examples of "obviously wrong and stupid" causes she got into was protesting the arrest of a stripper who got jailed for using an American flag during her act in a disrespectful way...
I don't know, I haven't watched more than an individual episode in years. I did like the one where two of the other characters took an interest in one of her causes and actually did something about it.
