Bonus points if you "dress up" enough to fit in. Find a decent jacket at a thrift store and add some pockets if you wanna be fancy about it
In rich neighborhoods they definitely do have security, they're just dressed in plain clothes. I worked in an upper class Whole Foods-esque chain for a while and the security was very vigilant.

if you’re buying multiple items, scan one with multiple in your hand if possible. helps if they’re small.

if you’re feeling extra confident, just put two items in the bag at once, after only scanning one of them. the biggest thing is to keep the weight sensors in mind. there is a scale in the bagging area, and it senses if an item is placed in the bag or on the counter without scanning it first, but it’s very stupid. all of these tips are about tricking it.

for bulk items, manually type in the cheapest possible thing you can think of. make sure nobody is watching because sometimes the machine will say aloud what you selected.

kind of not the question but 90% of the time you can just pocket shit lol. employees are trained not to engage shoplifters, and that’s if one happens to see you. they might ignore their training though, so be careful. just slip something in your pocket or your bag when alone.
Damn, self checkouts in America have weight sensors and snitch on every item you scan? Thats fucking wild.

I've accidently shoplifted from self check outs never mind intentionally. I've accidently not scanned stuff and put it in the bag only for the cashier to just click the "ignore" button on their little station. I don't know if the experience is the same for anyone else, but cashiers don't seem like they actually care so long as you aren't buying 5 bags of groceries for 5.50 cause you scanned everything as bananas. Especially if it's busy and you don't act sketchy. Lately the scales have been super sensitive and I've had it lock up after scanning the first thing with an empty bag because I didn't instantly teleport my ramen into the bag, seems like most cashiers in my area are burnt out of alarms and just ignore them all.
Helps that the times I've been caught at it I just pretend I'm a useless brain dead computer phobic person and just let them correct it. It would be different if I was shoplifting for survival and didnt have the money, gotta respect the comrades doing that. Maybe I should shoplift for the food bank lmao, I've literally never thought of it until now.
pay in cash and wear a full mask and sunglasses. they've really dialed up the number of cameras nowadays (at walmart at least) so you have to be careful.
act natural about it and do it in ways with plausible deniability or that add confusion;

try to sync up with other people scanning nearby so you can mistake their beep for yours

leave dogfood/litter/milk/whatever underneath the cart and forget to scan it
basically do stuff in a way that either isn't visible to the plethora of cameras or isn't incriminating if it is visible to the cameras. and do it anonymously so they can't keep a file of you.
Do "they" actually keep a file on you? I feel like the industry is streched too thin by the markets to justify some manager investigating the shoplifters, at least in Europe once you're out of the gate you have nothing to worry about
I don't know for certain but I've heard of places doing so. As with everything in the panopticon, safest to assume someone is watching, at least when it comes to low-effort things like wearing a facemask everywhere.
Target does this so I've heard. They'll wait for you to steal a bunch of times and then nail you with all of the stuff at once.
Target does. They're notorious for letting you steal stuff until you trigger the felony theft laws then prosecuting you as hard as they can. That's part of the reason the target in Minneapolis was burned during the uprising - It was a test store for their security apparatus and people hated them.
Depends on the store's management.
Worked at a store that didn't really have a file but if the theft was of a high enough dollar amount or consistently seemed to happen around the time of a specific customer in the area, photos from the cameras would be handed around to employees to "keep an eye out for" this person while they were in the store.

Also don't go to the electronics section, jewelry section, etc. Easy way to get followed round the entire store by employees or security even when you're completely innocent
get a black friend who goes to the electronics section in minecraft while you do other things in minecraft and then split the loot
My father was a career criminal in his youth. He was a cleancut white guy that would get hired at places to fail to catch his friends stealing. Up untill he did some jail time it worked fairly well
Stores are so concerned with people stealing at self checkout, you can practically walk out with anything you can carry (so I've heard). Just make sure you have enough money in your pocket to buy a treat. If you steal without money you can be charged with burglary (in California. Not familiar with other states or countries.)
Wait, stealing without money is a bigger crime than stealing with money? What is this, some kind of system that hates the poorest in society?
I guess the logic might be that someone with money could argue they just forgot to pay, but if you do it without money there is no plausible deniability
It relates to intent;If you entered the store with no money your intent was to rob it, so it's considered burglary, whereas if you had money your intent on going in to the store could have been to shop amd you decided later to steal something.
Not so much stealing as getting a discount, but kiosks that allow you to "search for the product" can give you some plausible deniability every now and again. Select some item that pops up when searching that is a lesser price.
I'll often use this to punch in the generic fruits and veggies when I actually got organic. It's not much, but I'm a simple man.
I always just “forgot” to scan the smaller and more expensive items due to “accidentally” putting bags on top of them. Generally no one will be paying attention enough to notice, and the cameras don’t see the cart itself afaik. Also it’s easy to just play dumb and say you missed some items if you do get caught.
Put weighed items partially on the scale when you're ringing them up. Just gotta make sure you do the same placement when you move them to the bagging area. If you're doing multiple weighed items it's easier to leave some slightly off the scale then put them directly into a bag in the cart. I used to do this trick for people when I worked at a grocery store. At self checkout it definitely takes more finesse but gives more plausible deniability.
If you can go with multiple friends it makes it easier to pocket things because you can hide in the middle of the group. Jackets with interior pockets are a plus.

if you bring a few reusable bags you can just leave like half the stuff you're buying in there.
ideally you don't shoplift anything you don't have the money for, so if you get stopped you just pay for it. wear headphones and listen to music or a podcast that you can get really into and act like you're not really paying attention to what you're doing, and they usually don't care
also wear a hoodie with a big pocket to stick small stuff in
Yeah this is how I've accidentally shoplifted. I bring my reusable bags and always have another bag folded up in the main bag. I just put shit off the shelf directly into my bag because they never got any damn hand baskets at the entrance. So yeah I accidentally forgot something in the bag when I was checking out once. Mind you it was a serrano pepper worth like $.15 so ymmv.
