Musk is being hit with varied accusations of being a Nazi, a Russian, and/or a communist. Everyone is mad at him.

Musk just spent $44 billion to find out that he can't escape responsibility in the eyes of users who are way too online for their own good.

Twitter will ruin Musk's professional/personal reputation.

Everyone's already leaving for Tribel Social. According to their bio, the platform is “an innovative Twitter/Facebook alternative that’s free of hate, fake news & bots.”

Libs of Tiktok tried to join, and got mass flagged and banned in 20 minutes :michael-laugh:

Tribel Social is openly recruiting users directly off Twitter for the past 20 hours. Reminds me when Digg stories eventually just became a few comments about moving to Reddit.

Digg went from having millions to 10k's of thousands of users per day in less than 6 months. Let's see how fast Musk can burn $44 billion. Digg was valued at $200 million in 2010 and sold for ~$500k in 2014.

What was the reason for the mass exodus? I was never on Digg but I vaguely remember they did a redesign. Was that what set it off?

Sellout. The new owners fucked it up and when people complained, they were told "If you don't like it stop using it."

          So, they did.

I don't remember, I just remember that Reddit was a completely shitshow for months because of clashing cultures and norms. Did they ban porn or something?

The beauty of it is that they don't censor any posts. Their algorithms simply filter out fake news, bigotry and hostility. If you want to trend on their network, your posts must be factual and free of bigotry.

Libs of Tiktok posted “Men cannot get p*******.” “men cannot become w**** and women cannot become m**,” and “Joe Biden sniffs little girls.” Instant detection, instant auto-ban.

      fake news

We're still going to ban all Russian media and anything that in any way criticizes Ukraine or questions the narrative, even if it's just well sourced articles written before the invasion.

They'll find one of the fascist Jewish talking heads who are currently denouncing like 90% of American Jews as being "Not real Jews" because they're Reform or secular or Democrats or anti-Zionist.

This actually doesn't seem any more sinister or opaque to me than the way Twitter currently does moderation, although I'm sure the results will somehow be much worse.

yeah it's really hard to imagine how the site could be worse. enforcement is already minimal and arbitrary because investing in an adequately sized moderation department would yield few returns. currently the most consistent things they ban are direct threats of violence in language that can be flagged automatically against high-interest accounts. I could see musk scrapping that system, but since the real addicts just remake anyway, I don't see how it would make a difference.

This is probably the extent of what he's actually going to do. Swap out executives, make a big Twitter announcement, and try not to think about how empty he feels after spending $44 billion on a site that feels like it's at the start of its decline. I seriously doubt he'll be able to maintain enough interest to actually pursue some new terms of service or whatever.
