Now I like a lot of video essays when they're interesting deep-dives but this is just ridiculous. You have 20 hours of shit to say about skLOLrim? How much of that is new and unique insight? are you just going through and giving every single set-piece an hour review and a score out of 10? :stalin-stressed:
side note, the channel name gives me chud vibes too :what-the-hell:
I can get behind long essays, and you shouldn't knock them just for being long or an unusual format, but that being said Patrician TV videos are trash. They're boring and unimaginative, very mlld analysis, and the videos are structured in a pretty obtuse way that gets in the way of more comprehensive analysis.
Joseph Anderson actually did good ultra-long-format essays, though nothing he could possibly say in his witcher 3 video can make his years of work on that video worth it.
I tried to watch his one on the "soulsbourne inheritors" in even finding that topic idea really interesting I had to tap out after an hour. If the whole video had been about two hours I might have pushed through it, but damn even podcasts I like typically limit themselves to just one.
I like his videos while simultaneously finding him slightly annoying
Shaymay also does good long form video game video essays (your algorithm might have pushed the behemoth 5 hour Omega Ruby review back in the day)
He's not especially chuddy and will occasionally give content warnings for upsetting content but after going through his content, a warning I'll give is that he sometimes jumpscares you with coomer brain comments.
Well some of the work Joe has put during the past years was put into his 4 kids rather than making youtube slop. I'll respect him for that.
But Skyrim is a truly delightful game
wait did I say game, I meant game engine to install mods on
i have 1196 mods in my modlist :oh-shit:
i did
watchlisten to these videos too, he's trashing skyrim mostly and gives a pretty decent analysis on why exactly playing a mage is horrible shit in vanilla skyrim.
I like lore deep dives because a lot of actual work has gone into doing the almost-conspiratorial threads of the series make sense
But maybe it's me who's a bit weird.
Assuming most of them are American, I blame the school system here. :amerikkka-clap:
Basically in K-12 you get rewarded almost as much for the quantity of words as you do for the quality of your argument. So unless you're making a straight up lefty meme, you might as well not say anything at all. I had to physically think of how much filler I needed to put into my writing just so it was wordy enough to pass the minimum page requirement.
Not sure about other country school systems tho :shrug-outta-hecks:
:jesus-christ:
Padding in order to game the youtube algorithm is the only explanation for the proliferation of this kind of extremely long form content. You could go over the details of every single Skyrim quest and analyze them all according to a Marxist framework in less than twenty hours.
there is not 20 hours of skyrim to analyse. there is not. this is not analysis. shut the fuck up :guts-rage:
20 hours for a video essay is perfectly reasona- hold up, it’s 20 hours and 11 minutes. Yeah agreed this is wayyy too long.
It’s me. I’m watching that shit.
The long elder scrolls ones go through every quest line and explain the relations to other in game shit, analysis of what’s bad and good and the mechanics involved.
Those videos don’t even hit everything. The oblivion one didn’t really go into a bunch of fan favorite side quests.
I don’t think anyones watching them all in one go. They’re broken up with chapters or tags or whatever that make em more normal sized 30 minutes to an hour chunks.
I am also guilty, I did see this pop up in my recommendations, might still check it out, though another commentator said the channels videos aren't quality.
I'll also throw in the Action Button Reviews guy, has long but very indepth videos
though another commentator said the channels videos aren’t quality.
if you're referring to me, you might like it more than i did, i just found the guy very irritating personally
Gave a bit of a watch, has kinda the speech pattern of a knowitall, I can see that being irritating
Eh, the voice is annoying, but they document their process and explain how a bunch of stuff connects or fails to connect so I can look past it.
It’s not like the world revolves around understanding elder scrolls shit and the idea of a retrospective that actually tries to form a post-facto understanding of the subject and allows the viewer to do synthesis is enough.
i like pointlessly long videos like this myself
however i tried watching this guy's morrowind one and shut it off after 5 minutes, he's fucking insufferable
nice! thanks for the recommendation, needed something to listen to while i draw
What are you drawing? You have 20 hours to leave a response.
On one hand, I don’t mind people geeking over things they love for hours on end so long as they don’t expect mass appeal.
On the other, a lot of this seems to have wiki summaries to pad out the length, so :edgeworth-shrug:
If I can beat the game in less time than it takes you to re-cap it, the material should be removed from the streaming service.
Patrician TV is a fart huffing moron.
The Willlovesvideogames six hour Oblivion review is actually pretty good, mostly because Will is cool and doesn't suck himself off throughout the entirety of the eassy.
Of course it's a trap. The best possible outcome is that you spend six hours watching a really good Oblivion review.
wise owl provides the widest perspective. why are there so many cool birds in here
There was a three hour video on Daggerfall made by some Welsh dude released earlier this year that I found really enjoyable despite never having even played the game
