Isn't that one of the leading theories on how that missing Malaysia Airlines plane went down?

There are a few holes in that line of reasoning tho, as both the pilots families reported that nothing was wrong in either of their lives, one of them was even about to be married soon. But maybe the "culprit" was just very good at hiding their anguish? Who knows, Flight-370 is notoriously hard to solve, cause there are just too many unknowns and with no blackbox it's impossible to really know what happened.

Personally I am a fan of the "there were microchip experts heading to China on the plane, so the USA hijacked it, crashed it and stole the blackbox." conspiracy theory, cause I think the USA is that petty about China.

There was an airline crash in Europe around the same time where the pilot just decided fuck it and flew into the side of the mountain. Can't remember if the copilot was in the bathroom or just also suicidal

        Edit: Germanwings Flight 9525

Aviation authorities swiftly implemented new recommendations from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency that required two authorised personnel in the cockpit at all times, but by 2017, Germanwings and other German airlines had dropped the rule.

        :yea:

This was the exact scenario I had in my head when I typed my comment. Leaving even greater responsibility and agency to singular individuals commandeering transports with potentially hundreds of people is a recipe for disaster. But hey, anything for more profits! :capitalist-laugh:

Can't wait to be laughed at even more by spoiled wall street exec that I need to toughen up. While I take one for the team over and over again, they never have to lift a finger in their lives.

Typical neoliberal ideology. Fucks sake these people would strip smoke alarms from homes if they could cos 99.9% of the time they aren't needed.

There’s already been a couple of crashes where the pilot hated the copilot so much he tried to fly the plane alone. We know this is a bad idea.

    Self-proclaimed economic geniuses, everyone.

You have two cows, you sell one and force the other to produce the milk of ten cows because e f f i c i e n c y. You then hire a consultant, scratching your head wondering why the hell the cow died.

Absolutely INSANE - but this will eventually happen when they invent some bullshit 'co-pilot AI' to help with decision making etc.

There's an Eddie Izzard bit about this, where the pilot of a small plane flies it into the ground because of passengers complaining that the pilot gets a better snack

Only a fraction of runways are equipped with ILS (Instrument Landing Systems), and those typically are only capable of guiding the plane to decision height, not actually landing it. :joker-laden:

Autoland that works at any airport is actually a thing now but it is not a mature technology. It is still an emergency thing for if the pilot has a seizure or something and can't fly, so you press the button to not crash and die.

        be me

        on short final to land

        "minimums"

        can't see shit, go-around, go-around

"I'm sorry sir, the company will not tolerate the extra fuel expense. We're landing"

        TOGA power set, nothing happens

        plane lands itself

shit, turns out there was another plane on the runway

collide and burst into flames, skidding off the runway, killing everyone on board

I mean its weird in the sense that it would be a ghoulish solution that aligns with the railroad's labor-cutting MO, so it's surprising they haven't tried

Rail unions in France are more militant than the energy industry unions and those ones threatened to turn off the power during the gilet jaunes unrest pre-covid.

They know this and they pick their battles carefully.
