Yes. Sometimes when a foreign movie comes to the US, the distribution company changes some things to appeal for the US market. I remember that sometines they even dub British and Australian movies with US va.

It's finlandization. They go out of their way to censor things they imagine China might not like. Plus they'll put Chinese actors in for five minutes to check a quota box. Meanwhile Chinese audiences roll their eyes and try to download the real cut of the film with fan-made subtitles.

Fucking wild that it's an open secret the pentagon makes massive edits to Hollywood movies to propagandize its own population, and their angle of leverage here is to threaten to withdraw that censorship so... That... The other side can't censor?

Honestly this is just asking Hollywood to choose its market now, and they're probably fine with that.

I once told my friends that the pentagon and CIA are deeply involved in Hollywood financially and editorially. They got kinda mad and said I was making it up. I showed them that National Security Theater book and they still said I was making it up.

Americans are the most heavily propagandized people in human history.

I was arguing with a :LIB: about that Chinese action movie that prompted a round of yellow peril a few months back. They tried to claim that it's okay that America made war movies because that's just a FREE MARKET™ providing what CONSUMERS want! It's different when China does it because they're intentionally stoking jingoism in their population.

Imagine their surprise when I cited the extensive censorship and collaboration between US DOD and CIA. Would you guess that they just flatly refused to believe it, and defaulted to racist tropes to defend it all in the same breath?

This could backfire and mean that some studios just go in harder on the China market right?

Why would studios adhere to this? China makes up like half of their box office. It would be funny if this resulted in more Chinese propaganda because this only prohibits the Pentagon from giving them money and props, but they’re still allowed to ask China for jets and tanks lol

Can’t wait for Top Gun 3 where Tom Cruise joins Jackie Chan and his military unit in a nondescript Asian country that flies Chengdu J-20s because no one at the pentagon gave them jets

It feels like that's the logical outcome of this. You can't release your film in China if you use our jets, but you can release your film here and in China if you use their Jets.

Or you can just, CGI American jets and release them in both regardless?

Profit is such an enormous drag on an endeavor. You can really tell this thing isn't about "efficiency" it's about extracting surplus value from workers and reproducing class relations.

I know how people tend to blame China for lackluster lgbt representation in Hollywood films.

I'm just imagining if people are gonna see this and go "Yes! Now lgbt representation will thrive in Hollywood with CHYNA out of the picture!" or something.

But besides that jfc how many fucking times do I have to say I hate this fucking country, its government, and its politicians? I've already said it once today. Do I have to just keep posting "I fucking hate the United States and its stupid-ass politicians" once every day from now on?

Do I have to just keep posting “I fucking hate the United States and its stupid-ass politicians” once every day from now on?

"Death to Amerika" or "another cracker down unlimited genocide on the 1st world" are adequate replacements for that.

I find that saying "Death to America" in different languages spices things up a bit.

This is good actually. They now just need to pass the other bill preventing the Pentagon from spending defense funds on any film that doesn't coordinate with China and we're getting somewhere

lol this means marvel will stop taking pentagon money to access the Chinese market

all this will do is give us more movies without western propaganda, and a few movies that are intensely propagandistic

Having just finished a binge of the latest Marvel slop, I'd say if they're smart they'll bet on China

The only good Marvel movie in phase 4 was Shang Chi and it wasn't even close

I wanted to like Multiverse of Madness but it was just bleh, Wakanda Forever was a mixed bag that ended up a bit better than the first Black Panther but still not great

I went into Shang Chi cautiously optimistic with an emphasis on the caution but I was kinda blown away. I was dreading it being filled with anti-communist and anti-China propaganda but thankfully there was none to be found because the suits understood that they needed the Chinese market for this movie to ever be successful

Sure maybe it would just be average as a kung fu movie but as a Marvel movie it was vastly better than the other slop

Didn't know that but it also makes sense that China would prefer movies about their culture to be their own and foreign films to be something else

Still a pretty good movie for Marvel slop

I really liked the sick Kung Fu Hustle homage at the climax of the film.

Let's see here on ye olde fascism list ...

    • Powerful and Continuing Nationalism

Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

China can't censor scripts, only we can! All films must be America circle jerk. Not able to show China or Russia in positive light. Tune to the superb :owl-wink: unless you're :freedom-hater:

    • Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause

The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial, ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.   Make sure you refer to China as the [CHINESE] [COMMUNIST] party. Emphisis on COMMUNIST. They're coming to indocrinate you're kids! Also something something 'woke' because that's our code word for [un-American activities ].

    • Obsession with National Security

Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

Are you SCARED of the Chinese COMMUNIST balloon party yet? Do you feel sufficiently threatened now? Maybe we should call their satelites STALINites? Reeeee COMMIES over YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD. It's q matter of nationL security we engage in a dorect and hostile arms race with the OTHER nation capable of Blowing you up. Are you sure your [ASIAN] :us-foreign-policy: husband is not a CCP spy? Here's a hotline to rat out anyone you suspect. They could be anywhere.

    • Controlled Mass Media

Sometimes the media are directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media are indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.   No more Chinese Apps or Media. Only CIA and Pentagon approved. I want 24/7 on the "spy balloon" keep it on repeat until the masses accept whatever. Just get them to question it. Plant those seeds. No one is safe from spying COMMIES! Boost it on Youtube since those young freaks don't watch :1984: . Bought to you by Pfizer.

    • Supremacy of the Military

Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.   Shoot it down! Use the most expensive jet that's flyable and shoot it down! That's muh airforce! Yeeeeah! Superbowl baby with the flyby! Why are you kneeling for our brave troops? Don't you know they fought a balloon for your :freedom-and-democracy: ?

Also we need more money for the dozen of bases we need to build to :frothingfash: COUNTER COMMIE AGGRESSION

On that last point, it's not just about military spending. American society is geared towards worshipping the troops. Anything less than uncritical and total support for the troops will cause you problems, up to and including strangers getting confrontational
