Nah that's totally fair Rod, even the average :blob-no-thoughts: has no excuse for being unaware of how insidious "social media" is, so singling this one firm out is silly. I know Zuck got some shit during the Trump-Russia BS but compared to how bad the Cambridge Analytica stuff was this level of attention from US legislators is crazy.

Ngl there's the fact that Facebook's own algorithms according to a lot of human rights groups were partially responsible for boosting the genocide in Malaysia if I remember correctly. Like Tiktok is either porn, animal videos, or weird informational videos and meanwhile Facebook has created multiple armed militia groups wanting to do a domestic terrorism the same way people decide to go on a picnic.

Oh, the letter agency already have the data. Tiktok users data store in EU and US after all, it's Douyin is the one that store in China. The problem with this is Facebook are free falling so paid these dumb ass to ban a tiktok, especially it from a Chinese company that they can't fully control.

I really hope none of these tech psychos are remembered by history. Just a few paragraphs about how the tech barons slowed the inevitable collapse of capitalism with man-made horrors that made some people very rich and then the house of cards fell down.

It’s a Chinese company that operates within the joke that is American law to profit off Americans’ low attention span and high consumption culture.

I’m assuming the US is upset because China has laws to protect their citizens and won’t allow the US to do the same to Chinese citizens lol

The idiotic US government is really making me have a tiny ounce of respect for a CEO, it feels horrible.

But of course he's possibly a billionaire (I'm seeing some conflicting numbers, it might "just" be $200 million), so fuck him.

If asked "how did you ask them to change the source code", give an incredibly technical answer full of jargon, and then end it with a condescending "and if there's anything I just said that you didn't understand, feel free to ask".

Bill Gates has a similar attitude during his deposition for US v. Microsoft after being asked whether he wanted to "control Java", the programming language, and snapped back claiming he didn't understand what it would mean to control java, drawing an analogue with not knowing what it would mean to control COBOL or BASIC.

The interviewer, being some suit, obviously doesn't know what those words mean so he ignores them and moves on.

I think there was a little more context before this question as to what "source code" they're talking about (but I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't, based on how coherent these US hearings usually are).

Out of context though, the CEO being asked both "why not" and "whether" he asked engineers to change the source code is really broad and confusing lol. Which source code? The frontend app? Some recommendation engine/algorithm? Internal staff tools? Who qualifies as an engineer? Their manager? The director of another department who probably communicated the change to their manager?

...The Americans do this type of shit all the time though? Why are they pretending this is so unprecedented? I guess social media as surveillance should be something we push back against, but unless they're going to repeal the US government's legal ability to request data from companies (or the CIA/FBIs ability to just steal it), it's pure hypocrisy.

The people in congress are absolute dumbasses that have no idea wtf they are talking about and are in no way qualified to question anyone on anything, except maybe questions around grifting and bribery.

These hearings are always a dumb joke, with each of these goobers trying to look as “tough” as possible for a simple sound bite.
