This is a direct result of 3rd party apps for Reddit like Apollo and RIF shutting down on June 30 in response to the recent changes (like Reddit demanding $20m a year).

The mod says their work will be too hard w/o these apps as the official one is dogshit.

Sad day.

Also, much love to our mods/admins. Hopefully moderating this site is better than Reddit.

You know they're probably really well placed to make Lemmy actually work. Make an /r/traa instance and even if only like 10% of their massive user base joined they would have a decent community.

That place isn't really my thing, and too liberal to join here, but it would be cool to see a big network of mainstream queer Lemmy instances. A lot better than all my trans friends still on Twitter.

None of these liberals know they can literally just make their own instance if that bothers them so much

some real jokers in there: "I know the two biggest lemmy instances are tankie, but are there ones that aren't? Are beehaw and blahajzone tankie too? "

"As for another place to hang out, we could go to https://raddle.me. Yes, at the moment their trans sub is pretty dead, but this reddit alternative has some things that make it worth trying. First and foremost a strong stance against bigotry, anti-authoritarian admins and solid privacy - with just the first two points they're imo already above any other major reddit alternative that you can actually sign up for without invite nonsense."

"For like 2 years they had a hardcoded word filter, which even if it followed a noble goal, was kinda stupid. You couldn't type "stardew valley", it would become "sremovedew valley". "

Tankie has really become the new red scare term to deployed at every instance of advocacy for actual communism/socialism or even just disagreement with the dominant “acceptable” versions of leftism - DemSoc/anarchism/left-libertarianism.

So you might as well ignore it,

        Or love the word instead,

'cause you ain't been doing nothing

If you ain't been called a red tankie

Honestly, I think the majority of this tankie-hatred from trans redditors is them confusing 'tankies' with patsocs and nazbols that are against LGBTQ+ people + calling it 'western bourgeois decadence'. This was an issue for me a couple years ago and why I avoided ML spaces before I started reading theory and learned the actual origin of the term tankie (and also met some cool Marxist trans folk). I feel like Hexbear's anti-sectarian policies really helped cultivate a space where non-Marxist leftists could be educated and just hang out with 'tankies' in a relatively non-judgemental community. I guess the answer is that it takes time for people to educate themselves and they have to want to be educated.

Libs: Hexbear is infested with with tankies. I bet they like people like Haz.

Hexbear: Hey, remember that time Haz was here shitting all over himself and got banned for saying smoking weed makes people gay.

Nazbols: “being gay and also gender equality is western decadence.”

Also nazbols: “you see, we need to gentrify leftism so the westerners will like us. Tailism totally works, guys. You really want to make the totally-working-class white suburbanite upset?”

Fuck me. The Enshittification. As much as :reddit-logo: sucks, there are a lot of little niche communities that are important for communities that otherwise have trouble finding each other, and as enshittification spreads there are fewer and fewer places for people to go.

I'm glad we have comrades who were willing to take on the task of building this site, and for keeping it up and working.

Reddit Extended themselves into niche community forums, they Embraced the ability of people to access those niches in one spot, and now they’re Extinguishing anything that’s not profitable. Classic

Seriously, I’ll admit that r/196 was very helpful for me because it was a meme sub that went out of its way to say “trans rights” and scare off anyone who wants to flood the sub with out of context crime statistics and call it a “meme”.

I don’t suppose we can do a little outreach and see if we can get people on this site?

We should make effort (and from the link, it seems like some people already are) to onboard /r/traa refugees. Thanks to the ruthless purging of all transphobic elements that was present in the nascent Hexbear community, this truly is one of the most trans inclusive spaces. It's probably even more than /r/traa because I remember trans men and enbies not liking /r/traa for centering trans women.

If nothing else, Hexbear has pronoun flairs, something that neither lemmy nor beehaw have. This is a non-negotiable point if you don't want to constantly get misgendered by he/him pronouns. It will take time for a traa instance to be build, which means some /r/traa refugees will inevitably trickle over to Hexbear.

I think we could absorb some of them. We have a strongly pro trans stance, which we've intentionally lost users over so they know which side we would take if a problem came up. We're also acknowledging the genocide Trans people are facing right now, unlike a lot of places. Yeah they're libs for the most part, but some of them must be cool and starting to see through the heightening contradictions.

How true is it about the mod work though?

I used to mod several subs and what you could do as a mod on rif was limited. What you could do on the reddit app was limited. To have full mod controls you had to be on a pc.
