this mother fucker really going to look me dead in the eye and say that French Guiana is not a colony?
:so-true: Bazinga! In order for it to be a colony there literally has to be guys in pith helmets strapping people to cannons and cutting off hands for failing to meet resource quotas! Colonialism is not an abstract extractive relationship between a core and periphery, it's when heckin victorian era clothes and literal territorial annexation!
EDIT: Thanks for the gold kind stranger!
It’s not colonialism unless it happens in someone’s colon, otherwise it’s just sparkling capitalism
France is colonialist? So, you're saying Macron is a member of the Union coloniale française, or do you just call everything you don't like "colonialist"?
Bazinga! In order for it to be a colony there literally has to be guys in pith helmets strapping people to cannons and cutting off hands for failing to meet resource quotas!
French Guiana, Françafrique, the Dutch Antilles, Greenland, las Malvinas, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, and a bunch more.
las Malvinas
with you on the rest, but come on. it's a thousand shepherds on a barren rock no one else ever lived on.
In the case of the Falklands, for me it's less about democracy, and more that no single nation like the US or UK or France should be able to claim sovereignty over far-flung islands across the globe which then confer unearned navigational and resource rights.
Also the Amazon, Northern Canada, de Jure Palestine, Kashmir, various islands across the world like New Caledonia, the Northern Territory (Australia) and a few more
I'm not sure what you do with border regions, per say. Kashmir can't operate independently in any serious fashion. Its always going to be dominated by one of its economic neighbors, so there's a real argument that it should be integrated and its citizens secured as legal residents of that country, rather than operating as a wealthy but conflict-ridden gray zone.
Same with the Palestinian states, as they are currently constructed. The current Israeli partition can't endure. Either you have a united Palestine with continuous borders absent Israeli occupation or you incorporate the Palestinian authority into the Israeli state. But this state of statelessness is intolerable. I'm not even sure if you can define Palestine as a colony in the modern sense. Its more just a series of open-air prisons.
Puerto Rico is a commonwealth, not a colony. Its right there in the name.
The US Virgin Islands are simply where we store our national reserve of virgins.
Nobody ask about Haiti.
Ackshually it is an overseas department and not a colony.
Tankies destroyed by facts and logics.

That's what everyone concentrates on, but the main channel (the German one) was funded by the Federal government of Germany until earlier this year (they quit the contract because public broadcasting rules banned them from advertising merch lol)
ahahahahahaha and I thought it couldn't get any more blatant ahahahahaha :matt-jokerfied:
Their HQ is in München, by far the most gentrified city in the country, with rents up to triple that of other areas.
Really, I thought Frankfurt or Berlin might be more gentrified?
Furzgesagt merch seems to make the channel more money than they'd get through federal funding
:yea:
Don't worry, the CDU and the AfD (openly working together) are gonna block the broadcasting fee increase for federal public broadcasting from Sachsen-Anhalt because it's not chud enough, I suppose.
I asked during their AMA why they take money from known Jeffrey Epstein associate Bill Gates and he called me Alex Jones 🤔
Imagine getting a check for over half a million dollars to make these dipshit videos.
Love to plot nebulous concepts on a graph. “Virtuosity since 1900”, “Claptrap since 1882”, “Fantastic over time”
I've seen his shit defended here before.
I've rejected his quirky infographicy bazinga propaganda ever since his "if 99% of humanity was wiped out by an environmental crisis, that's still a net win for future humanity!" :galaxy-brain: take.
EDIT: Yes, it was an established poster, not a wrecker; I didn't name names because I didn't want to start that specific struggle up again.
Yes, I didn't like it and I feel vindicated about Kurzgesagt being lib propaganda with every additional video that Kurzgesagt comes out with. Being told "if you ignore X Y and Z Kurzgesagt actually has great takes about specific topics" :morshupls: was bullshit to me then and is bullshit to me now. Have grievances with me if you must about that. :ok:
The 'We will stop climate change' video is the one that was completely unforgivable to me. Absolutely uncloaked propaganda out on display.
Edit: Like, the eco-fascism I can believe that they actually believe that part. I can easily believe they get horny about depopulation. But the climate change video? There's no way those ~meticulous researchers~ actually believe that we can stop climate change with innovations like better light bulbs. That was just lying to be part of a chorus of complacency.
I hear way more people talking about seeing bad opinions on hexbear than I see myself, are you sorting by modlog or something?
Adding a "lol" to that doesn't make your own grievance any more subtle. :ok:
I got no beef with you sir just an observation
My observations must be grievances.
Your grievances must be observations. :morshupls:
You had spite in your tongue when you said “some users here said x”. I made a jape. I meant no spite and I apologize if you read it that way.
I got no beef with you sir
:doubt:
You had spite in your tongue
:ok: Yes surely I was grinding my teeth and my hair was falling out too. But no beef at all. Just observations from your crystal ball.
Sarcasm aside, that's concern trolling on your part where you wrote assumptions about me, telling me what you presume my mental state is. :blob-stop:
I made a jape
It was just a le funnay joek, and it's also just an observation and what I say must be worse than that. :morshupls:
your posting does get a bit “they’re in my walls at times”
Yeah I'm going to stop reading right there and ask you to drop the implied ableism to that particular nugget of concern trolling.
Pulling an implied "u r mentally ill" card, no matter how much you dislike something I posted, isn't a good look.
Translating from Ulysses talk: "I've seen people defending X even on Hexbear" usually means "there was a wrecker with a bad take two years ago and now I'm going to make it sound like it's a common thing."
In the cause of Kurzgesagt, it was not a wrecker; it was someone with an established post history. I just didn't name names.
Please no, I don't want my comment to be responsible for starting a struggle sesh or rift
Please no, I don’t want my comment to be responsible for starting a struggle sesh or rift
I hope it doesn't; I'm fine with any struggle session here being restricted to "not a grudge, just an observation :doubt: " grudgeposting because I brought up that sometimes there's bad takes on this site.
It happens enough that I can just roll with it.
Either way I didn't intend to dunk, I just genuinely don't see the slop people mention here sometimes. I presume that's because our mods are doing an excellent job.
Sorry that people took my comment and jumped on it to dogpile.
It definitely wasn't majority opinion but the "actually Kurzgesagt's videos are okay if you pick out X Y and Z," while not as glaringly absurd back when it was said (there were more pop-sciencey videos that were less ideologically terrible than more recent videos), did rub me the wrong way.
Sorry that people took my comment and jumped on it to dogpile.
It's mostly one "just observations, just japing you bro, but THOU HAST SPITE ON THY TONGUE" :very-intelligent: not-a-grudge grudge holder here. The rest was fine.
It became pretty clear is was a façade once they started touching social issues, and their thesis was "everything is gonna better"
I'm just surprised people feel like they can characterize your posting. I don't remember shit specific users say unless it's either exceptionally based or atrociously bad.
I'm glad I rotate accounts every few months or so, even if it means I don't build rapport over time.
At this point, especially with the grudgeposting I already unintentionally invited into this thread, I'd rather not.
As I said it's not a call out as much as a "Kurtzgesagt (admittedly, back when there were more sciency videos and less directly ideological videos) sometimes receives excuses and justifications and it isn't confined to :reddit-logo: " warning.
Dunk me if you will, but in the case of Kurzgesagt defending, it was an established poster, definitely not a wrecker. I hope they changed their mind eventually.
I may have been a radlib at the time, but I don't think Kurzgesagt was pumping out propaganda from the outset. It was mostly shit about physics and black holes and cool nerd stuff. Feels like all of that was a Trojan horse for the propaganda in retrospect.
In the past I think there may have been some plausible defense for Kurzgesagt videos, even if I hated the cute quirky :reddit-logo: targeting presentation from the start and even recommended videos from well meaning progressives rubbed me the wrong way (the one about "keys to power" comes to mind).
The "99% of humans killed off is a victory for the 1%!" take from Kurzgesagt was so on the nose in favor of :capitalist-laugh: that from that point forward such defenses were inexcusable to me.
I know the exact CGPGrey video you're talking about too 💀
“99% of humans killed off is a victory for the 1%!”
I have not seen this one, and I'm so glad I stopped watching holy shit
I know the exact CGPGrey video you’re talking about too 💀
My mistake, that was a CGPGrey video; I didn't like his videos either even if the presentation is less slick and big budget sus to me.
I have not seen this one, and I’m so glad I stopped watching holy shit
I believe it was the "what happens if there's a big calamity that threatens life on Earth" video. Yeah its conclusion was that it'd be great for the 1% that remains, because the implication was, presumably, that :porky-happy: can repopulate the magically livable planet after the worst was over.
The art style is cute in a more early 2000s kinda way, but it's absolute lib shit. Same vein as all of those alternate history anti-material garbage channels.
For bystanders, unless you're into hate watching, don't.
I believe it was the “what happens if there’s a big calamity that threatens life on Earth” video. Yeah its conclusion was that it’d be great for the 1% that remains
Was this a recent video? I feel like tons of media has been doing leg work to prep the masses for escalating conflict with China and downplaying the threat of nuclear war.
The art style is cute in a more early 2000s kinda way, but it’s absolute lib shit.
It was prejudice on my part for sure, especially when Kurzgesagt's earlier videos were about "I Fucking Love Science" topics which were more grating in presentation than outright offensive to me, but I always hated Kurzgesagt's :corporate-art: delivery style.
Was this a recent video? I feel like tons of media has been doing leg work to prep the masses for escalating conflict with China and downplaying the threat of nuclear war.
It was some months ago. It was a generic "what if a disaster threatens the entire planet?" video and I forgot its exact name. It was trying to include climate collapse as a bundle with more vague and fantastical disaster scenarios as if to diminish its imminence and relevance compared to the what-ifs.
I liked the art style because it was quirky, and very well made.
My lib propaganda sensors were faulty at the time, but it's obvious now why the production quality was so high.
Shame that a name drop of climate change is enough to get libs to buy into right-wing narratives.
I suppose it's a difference of taste; you're not wrong to have liked Kurtzgesagt's presentation style, but I always hated it because to me it felt condescending and twee levels of quirky.
And if they haven't, you know where to find me, comrade. :chavez-guns:
There are Kurzgesagt apologists on my Hexbear? :lenin-rage: Kurzgesagt's neoliberal bias is so obvious (which they themselves describe as 'optimistic nihilism' lmao), I'd question any 'socialist' who defends that garbage. That video they did on how we'll fix climate change, was probably one of the most abhorrent pieces of false optimism I've ever seen.
It was in one specific Kurzgesagt related thread, even then it was a "sure this video sucks, but to be fair actually Kurzgesagt's videos are good if you ignore X Y and Z" the same way that some people on :reddit-logo: excuse Joe Rogan because he sometimes has non-chud guests.
Democracy is when you have different parties that all have the same policies.
That's called bipartisanship and it's the goal of every Third Way enlightened centrist :billdawg:
turning a big dial that says "Democracy" on it and constantly looking back at the audience for approval like a contestant on the price is right
Kurzgesagt please I’m begging stop doing this shit
Stick to what you’re decent at. Give me more videos like “What area would different nuclear bombs destroy”, “How does the immune system work” and “look how small/big everything is”
That’s not how graphs work? Even the dogshit American education system teaches that
Prager-U for college educated left leaning centrist, with some informative science videos on the side.
their older vids were much more blatantly neoliberal. they've toned it down a bit now but they still advocate for bandaid solutions.
