I was led to believe by all the TV sitcoms of the 80s that I'd wake up one day in my 40s, everything would feel totally different, and then I'd take long walks and be thoughtful about stuff, buy an overpriced motorcycle and dye my hair badly. I'm solidly into my 40s and I just worry about climate collapse, becoming homeless, and my partner's health. I honestly wish that becoming less attractive was something worth worrying about.

Sorry, you don't get one. "Midlife Crisis" was an imperial core suburbanite WASP reactionary phenomenon at the height of nihilistic easy living afforded by imperialism and unequal exchange. The lack of real problems like being colonized, imprisoned, or slaughtered by imperialists gave imperial core grill dads surplus leisure time to have existential anxiety about getting older. Now you get to have a never ending life crisis instead as your standard of living rapidly declines from the dedollarization and the rise of the global south. Your bosses will pay you less and less while your currency inflates more and more until the imperial core balkanizes and becomes a collection of outposts for a new imperial core (or, if we're lucky, China presses the Socialism button in 2050 like they say).
The mid-life crisis was realizing "Oh god I've been working 40 hours a week for 20 years, I'm going to do it for 20 more, and if I'm lucky I get 15 years before I die".

Same lol. Trying to go back to college but I havent done it at all before and not sure where to begin. And being 28, it's not like I have the naive "oh I'll just get a cool awesome job that respects me and this won't be an issue anymore!" that younger twenties get, I'm all aware Im basically putting myself into worsening debt slavery just for the hope of doing slightly more fulfilling than living with my parents (maybe I can get a shitty apartment instead!) and listening to a bunch of 70 year olds get pissed about their order.

I like this take. Midlife 'crisis' is more you finally have enough money and security to just blow it on something incredibly stupid you never would have a decade ago cause you couldn't afford to act like a dumb teenager anymore.....until you can a little bit again if you're privileged enough.
I think the midlife crisis was something endemic to boomers honestly. Millennials seem to have already had multiple similar crises that didn't involve large purchases or infidelity. I think maybe boomers panicked that their window of becoming rock stars had ended? Or they started having empty nest syndrome with their paid off houses and their stable jobs.
Maybe it's because once their kids move out, that's the last window they had to youth culture, leaving them only with their own thoughts.
Millennials, for the most part, as far as I have known them, have a sort of entire life crisis and that's due in part to the world they were born into that continues to fuck them over.

Lol I am in a similar space. I only lol because I spent an hour talking to my boss about this shit yesterday while he just nodded along. I felt so embarrassed and, well, not very clear headed for potentially putting my head on a chopping block and offering up my anxieties to my boss. He ain’t a bad dude and it’s a state job, but it just came out.
I mentioned a sort of mid life crisis but all i articulated was climate anxiety, childcare and concerns for the future of todays youth, healthcare, housing, and the workplace.
Midlife crisis is not wanting to be tied to wage for 40hrs a week to a job that you drive to while the planet burns and the bad guys stay winning, and not wanting to have your kid kicked off of medicaid rolls to where a routine visit to the doctor is denied to a 9yo for lack of medical insurance. Boomers thought they'd have even more in the 80s and had ennui. The closest I can come to that is thinking 2008 was rock bottom and slowly realizing how much that crisis was squandered, and it was probably intentional.
