Which mental illness? Being trans fortunately isn't a recognized mental illness anymore, just as we stopped viewing homosexuality as such decades ago. Dysphoria / gender incongruence still counts as a mental illness, but that doesn't apply to all trans people and regarding it as a mental illness in those were it shows up seems highly debateable, given that the only way to cure it is by altering the person's body and attempts to treat it psychologically instead fail as reliably as HRT or surgery work in treating it. Any state of the art trans healthcare leaves psychologists out of the equation and goes straight for gender affirming care. So logically i'd say that we're talking a physical condition that leads to mental health symptoms if untreated, but should be cured by somatic means. You wouldn't call a cis woman with PCOS mentally ill, you'd just give her laser hair removal if she requests it. How is that any different from being trans?

Hearing "mental illness" deployed this way takes me back to 4chan threads in a really bad way honestly.

I don’t mean we’re all mentally ill, or that being trans is synonymous with being mentally ill. I just mean we talk about dysphoria/depression/anxiety/ocd/adhd and so on a lot.

True, but i honestly don't think that's a bad thing. Mental illness and neurodivergence are extremely common, we're just being honest about it because we already share so much personal stuff.

The DSM is gaslighting transpeople and reinforcing the gender binary.

          A gender psychologist explains.

Yeah, I thought that was were you were coming from.

I was more making an addendum to what acid smiley was saying about the DSM. I think she did cover it well. And that it would be helpful for people to hear the gender psychologist giving her opinion on gender dysphoria as a mental illness too.

I was cranky and maybe short, but I didn't mean to direct that at anyone here. Was feeling frustrated with health care stuff.

I think that can apply to both megas.
