If we can get enough baristas to learn how to code, your salary can suck too. That's the endgame here.

Nah pretty sure the end game is still to outsource as much coding as possible to India.

Companies started doing that like crazy because "so cheap! pog" , but then they slowed way down because it's often a terrible idea.

          1. Time zone makes collaboration hard, and turnaround longer

          2. Accent barrier is real

          3. It's easy to do a terrible job, or outright scam you, and disappear into the ether

Most software projects unfortunately aren't just some programmer sitting down on a keyboard, it's like a big mess of people moving a big mess of code to hit a bunch of moving requirements based on the market, or whims of a CEO, or whatever.

Outsourcing the main component of that means you have a bunch of management and marketing people basically banging their head into laptop screens, and nothing gets done. They realized oh, I guess we gotta just pay 5 people 150k each, damn.

I agree with all of that, but that doesn't mean that the PMC fuckwits that run these companies wouldn't outsource to code sweatshops in the global south if they thought they could solve these problems.

Oh yeah of course, they did exactly that, because they thought exactly that, and they'll do it again if they come up with some way around this problem.

But I don't expect them to any time soon. That's why they're yelling at baristas to learn to code. They want to "outsource" the simpler coding work to cheaper Americans, and bring all wages down as a result. I'm pretty sure "Learn to code!!!" started after outsourcing died down.

I learned to code and all I got was an inbox full of spam and no job offers.

Sure anyone can "learn to code" but thats not what software development is. I'm in my final year at university and haven't taken a "coding" course in two and a half years. Hell, the last time I programed anything was 18 months ago. The real meat of computer science and "coding" is actually a shitload of discrete math thats already super hard to learn in structured classes. Theres no fucking way its realistic to expect someone working two jobs, or even one miserable job, to be able to take the time to teach it to themselves through some bullshit online courses.

"Learn to code" is the biggest fucking neolib scam that exists. Sure you finished the Codecademy python course and it took you days and weeks of effort, but when the interviewer asks "cool, so how could we optimize this to run in O(n * log(n)) time" youre probably gonna be fucked if you havent studied algorithms. How do you know which algorithms to study? You dont. Because they dont teach you that when you learn to "code". "Coding" isn't even a real thing. You don't just learn a language and suddenly magically know how to make everything. Just because I have the entire Java syntax memorized doesn't mean I can make you shit if I don't know how the hell to accomplish what youre asking. Its not that fucking simple.

"Coding" also really fucking blows if youre not into it and it still kinda fucking blows if you are. Wanna know what sucks worse than coding, though? Having the code you write make someone else millions upon millions of dollars and seeing only pennies of it. Nothing is more soul-sucking than knowing that 99% of your surplus value is being sucked away as you see another post about how the CEO of your company is on his way to becoming a xnzjcillionaire or whatever the fuck.

Computers are cool if youre into them. Programming can be fun if thats your thing. "Learning to code" while youre already being constantly exploited is a stupid fucking unrealistic expectation that neolibs who know nothing about "coding" invented so that they could sell you dreams, and then exploit you even harder if you achieve them.

Fuck anyone who tells you to learn to code, and fuck me for falling for it. I wanted to be an artist. I wanted to make fucking music. Now I make other people millions for pennies at the cost of my soul.

Also you can totally pass a CS degree at a directional state university without actually knowing shit about how to code. And the whiteboard questions they ask in interviews to prove you passed the data structures and algorithms course don't have much to do with what your actual job is, but what you wish your job would be.

Yeah, the point of a CS degree is the academic discipline and craft of computing. If you focus on the math, you don't program that often at all.

I’ve had the opposite experience where all the discrete math and algorithm complexity stuff I learned in college is completely useless in my actual job.

Turns out, making a Tower of Hanoi solver doesn’t have much application in enterprise software. Like why did my degree require 3 courses on OS and Assembly, but no full stack development?

Luckily I work in a tech department of a non-tech industry so I only had to answer personality questions instead of whiteboard bullshit to get my job.

I definitely make more money than a lot of people my age and I’m not in poverty, but it’s not enough to be a single-income household, buy a house in most cities, or go to the doctor if I haven’t met my deductible.

I’m pretty underpaid and I’m about to be passed over for a promotion because I’m paid too little to get that big of a pay raise.

Same. I got banned from the high strangeness sub cause I complained that there were too many Qanon posters. This mod that banned me sent me those most gnashed teeth reply about how “I’m so out of fucking line for saying their sub is over ran by QAnon posters and that they do a good job of moderating and fuck me for drawing any attention to what they consider a small issue”

I was like “yeah sure okay dude” and he just outright banned me from the sub. So I’m not sure what that website is used for or even good for anymore. Mods ban people for the dumbest shit yet let fascist fester and ruin good communities.

Like I said, insufferable losers. Insufferable losers who only can wield power behind their anime username and inflated sense of self-importance.

    Neolib: Learn to code

    Everybody learns to code

Everybody: Why aren't there enough coding jobs? And why are the wages of the existing jobs being slashed?

Neolib: It's called supply and demand, dumbshit, welcome to the Free Market.

Most Americans seem to want universal healthcare, so they must be aware that getting bankrupted because you got appendicitis is not good.

A large number of Americans seem to broadly believe they are living in a sorta meritocracy, where hard work etc. Is rewarded and that poverty is broadly the fault of the individual.

Somewhere there is an overlap between those two groups where people acknowledge that you can be bankrupted due to a medical emergency through no fault of your own and also that poverty is the fault of the individual.

I swear to god if all Americans were taught critical thinking a decent chunk of them would probably just sit in a catatonic state drooling for the rest of their natural lives as their entire worldview implodes.

exactly, even the idea of co-pay, deductible and oopm are insane. Like imagine starting ANY other business in america and telling your customers that they need to pay you 400 a month for your service, but before they can use it they need to come up with a deductible. By the time you get to explaining oopm and co-insurance they will have already told you to get fuck'd.

Wait forreal Starbucks offers health insurance? I'm in a pretty desperate spot I'll get kicked off my health insurance plan in 2 years and I'll need to have found a job with benefits by then. They wanna bill me $989 every time I go pick up insulin without insurance (my insurance decides nearly every month that they don't wanna cover the specific insulin I need without a doctor's note so I have to go through the process a lot, I know how much it costs out of pocket). And that's just insulin diabetics buy a lot of supplies like test strips and stuff out of pocket.

Idc if I have to work at Starbucks during the day and finish grad school at night, I just wanna not die.
