I've been watching a lot of philosophy tube, and some others, lately. And for the most part I really like them. However I've seen a bit of hate for them here. Am I missing something? Is criticism more directed at their the chunk of their fans who only pay lip service to the ideas they present or is actually a problem with the creators. Edit: Or maybe I miss read everything and this community doesn't have a problem with them at all. Edit 2: Thanks for the responses and other places to look. Like I said I've mostly been watching philosophy tube (who maybe subtly calls for violent uprising but he still does) and just dipping my toes into the others, looks like I'll skip most of the other channels. As far as being radicalized I'm there already, I just really like the presentation of what I've watched so far. And its given me something to send to my brother who has been mildly interested but is pretty damn far from radical.
Lmao imagine being at a wedding and going "OK NOW EVERYBODY SOYFACE FOR THE SELFIE!!"
Todd covering his face with his hand is the funniest shit ever.
He seems like a nice enough guy. Watching him helped me get over the idea of listening to music I enjoy as a "guilty pleasure".
Yeah. He's also a Breadtube-adjacent pop music reviewer whose schtick going back like 10 years is that you never see his face
Wait, he and Lindsay are married? I thought he was single and lived in New York, unless it's a long distance marriage or something like that.
I could be wrong- I know they dated a few years ago at least, so when I saw that photo I assumed that it was them getting married
According to a wired article her husband is named Nick, and Todd's actual name is either Todd or Ken. So yeah, they're probably not married to each other.
I actually didn't realize they were married until I saw this post, but I did know they had been dating so I'm assuming that's what we should take from that photo
The first thing that I thought when I saw this photo was how so over the top white they all are.
The second was that I never want to know who any of them are or meet them. They just look like an insufferable grift.
Chapo has always had an annoying habit of shitting on the leftward pipeline. You'll probably move past most of the breadtube people eventually and find huge faults with them, and that's fine.
"I've moved left, time to break the pipeline that led me here" is so, so dumb.
Yall were radicalized by breadtube?? Damn I fucking wish, believe it or not I skipped that part and went straight into chapotraphouse
you shitheads turned me into a socialist. Also breadtube pipeline is good
no judgement from me lol
Following on what NephewAlpha said, sometimes you outgrow your mentor. Kind of like that meme with the ninja turtles growing up alongside an aging master splinter.
An important part of the path radicalization that a lot of people including myself have followed, you grow out of most of their shit eventually if you are serious but I honestly don't understand the animosity a lot of people have towards them. You can't change someone from a lib to a Maoist without a growth process and deprogramming, at least not the western teens that these people tend to appeal to.
As long as you keep moving to the left, they are fine. Just remember that at some point, you'll probably find that they will point to lefties (you) and say, "Those lefties are just as irrational as the nazi's uWu."
I think the hate is mostly for their political views/opinions rather than their work per se; I enjoy watching Contrapoints and find a lot of her material fun, but for example, her character Tabby, in the video that was first introduced, was showed (even tho in a bit of a patronizing way) as a person with a respectable and understandable opinion, whereas in the later video of voting, was shown more like a stupid strawman that Natalie used in order to make look people who didn't want to vote for Biden as stupid and inmature. In short, breadtube has good videos analazying the problems of current society, but has awful "I think revolution cannot be achieved, therefore I'm more mature than you" kind of solutions to those problems.
She did say her tipping point was Trump being re elected or stealing it. Waaay back.
What everyone else already said. But also, there really are some very good breadtubers and some very... liberal breadtubers. Breadtube is a spectrum, not a monolith. I think most people here like Philosophy Tube, myself included. I also really like Thought Slime, Luna Oi, Non Compete, Angie Speaks, and of course Shaun. And a bunch more that aren't immediately coming to mind. Oh, BadMouse was really good too, but he's gone off the youtube grid.
Some started out very promising, but have just gone further and further downhill (and by that I mean towards the right), as they gained more popularity and the resulting status and wealth. Contrapoints being the prime example there. And some were shitlibs from the very beginning, like Lindsay Ellis who is deservedly the one getting the vast amount of hate here.
You can skip or watch as you see fit of course, but I'd recommend watching whatever looks interesting and seeing if you can spot the accumulating bad takes. Just make sure you also (pretend) to read actual theory too to gird yourself against libification.
And let me add one more thing: there needs to be a lot more actual leftist thought and analysis on youtube. Pipelines are real and I'd love to see more of them that carry people all the way, rather than part of the way, then dumping them off well short of revolutionary politics. A big part of the problem with breadtube is that because it doesn't go far enough left, it leaves a lot of people with the impression that that is as far as it goes, you know?
There will always be a spectrum, so lets make sure it extends as far left as is possible on any given platform.
We need to get Parenti in there somehow. I was literally bullied into reading him by old Chapo.
They usually are a bit lib, but mostly alright. The sub on the other hand is quite shit though. And then there's Vaush...
He's not mainstream, he's just well-known in this community in particular because he's such an easy target/provocateur.
A lot of breadtube content these days just looks the same to me now. It was fresh and new a couple of years ago but now it just seems that they are finding new ways to deliver the same old message. And this is because the people on breadtube don't grow ideologically, at least the most popular ones. They maintain their social democracy with anti capitalist characteristics as their ideology and dont bother to wander anywhere else for fear of alienating their audience. As a result you have large amounts of people who became more left wing than them now looking at them and cringing because they have grown in their ideological understanding while breadtube has remained the same.
I started following of the usual suspects breadtubers back in 2016 when trump was just elected. It was a breath of fresh air from all the alt right shit filling up youtube.
I think the reason i started to disconnect is that... let's face it; channels like contrapoints and Hbomberguy were originally juvenile dunk videos on nasty alt-right figures. They started to address more serious political and social problems of the era as the years went by but they seemed to reach a limit to their content around 2019. Ollie talks about interesting stuff but he seems a bit creepy to me and turns me off very quickly with his theatrical digressions. Contrapoints has still done some interesting videos lately (i really enjoyed her video on CRINGE) but her content feels less and less political as times goes on and more focused on identity. Hbomberguy is devolving into run of the mill pop culture analysis and I followed Lindsay Ellis for a while but as someone who doesn't care too much about American Pop Culture i started to switch off more and more. She seems to be devolving into one of those fandom commentators.
People i'm interested in on the left?
I follow zero book's you tube channel; Ben Burgis; Ashley Frowley, who seems to be shaping up as an anti-jordan peterson with her books on the psychology of happiness in late stage capitalism; I like thought slime tho sometimes i grow weary of his "pissed white boy talking angrily to a camera" aesthetic (there is a lot of that in you tube.) Cass Eris Has a small channel where lately she's been Demystifying Jordan Peterson's 12 rules of life book through behavioral psychology (interesting for understanding CHUD psychology); Tom Nicholas; Non compete; And i'm pretty sure i'm missing a whole lot.
Lately i've been looking for Leftist youtubers who are Trans or POC, just to get different perspective on political issues; recommendations are appreciated!
She was mentioned elsewhere in this thread, but Angie Speaks is a POC anarchist breadtuber with some really good stuff.
Three videos in, and i already love her content, Thank you comrade! ✨
Huntress x Thompson is lit, but she does g*ming and that's not everyone's cup of tea...
There are legit criticisms that I don't have time to go into during my work dump but they're an important part of the left pipeline as others have said. I do however think they can and should be doing a lot more to build socialism or at least aid left wing movements
Chapos are just reeling from all the "vote biden plz" stuff, it'll pass.
Probably a major factor, yeah. That and V*ush keeps entering the discourse somehow. I'm not sure how one decides who is "Breadtube" and who isn't, but I would've thought being a scumbag reactionary who just tosses around leftist terms occasionally wouldn't qualify, idk.
Being mad at Redditors isn't worth dedicating any brainspace to that loser
Eh, if you enjoy their stuff and grow to recognize the limitations of a lot of those individuals' views on political action, don't worry about it (I say, having just posted a Lindsay Ellis tweet in the dunk tank lol). Lbr online leftists are near-universally massive cultural cranks, not really worth getting peer pressured by us too much about media.
Don't you dare be calling my slimey thoughtso boi Matt a lib.
He is, but he's also actually an anarchist rather than a liberal with anarchist aesthetics,. You'll get yelled at by liberals if you post his videos on r/breadtube.
