and why is it one Arthur McBride you ask? It's got
- Hogs
- Irishmen clubbing arrogant British Army recruiters
- Rowdydowdows.
working retail will ruin any of the big christmas songs for you. Love being able to tell how long I've been working by how many times I've heard All I Want for Christmas is You
Working has ruined so much music. One of the first questions I ask is if I’m going to have to listen to other peoples music while at work.
The chain store I worked at had the same music playing at the same time at all stores in the country. So I'd call up a nearby store to see if they had a product in stock, and I could hear the same music driving me insane at my store, in the background at their store. It was also the hold music. There was no escape, most popular music from that period, and all holiday music, has been forever ruined.
It was the same at the store I used to work at, but even worse, because the music was just slightly not in sync. So it was this irritating echo that made me want to jump right out of my skin.
Then again finding coworkers with whom u can share the cranks hits different
Al "Weird Al" Yankovic's "Christmas at Ground Zero"
Seems fitting this year, as the county I live is has the highest COVID infection rates in the state!
Room temperature take: all anglosphere christmas songs are shit. If you look at the wikipedia page that lists them by country of origin, every single one from an English speaking country is actively torturous.
What's a good one, you ask? Well, varpunen jouluaamuna , of course.
Oh now! I'll have no such chat And I neither will take it from spalpeen or brat
How about some sad Sufjan Christmas?
That Was The Worst Christmas Ever!
There's an insane amount of stuff in his Christmas music if you dare to go digging. Traditional Christmas songs, originals, hymns, covers of Prince and Joy Division, noise tracks, the list could go on.
Sufjan's "Come Thou Font of Every Blessing" is actually one of the reasons I took up banjo. Now I can play it!
Him and Pete Seeger.
Hey, I love that song and also play it on my banjo! He's the reason I got one as well.
Sounds like the makings of a United Socialist String Band.
Which style? Clawhammer, Scruggs, or plectrum?
Eh I just got a normal Washburn 5-string (closed back) and I've always sorta just fingerpicked it like I do guitar. I'm not nearly fancy enough for anything more complex than that, and I've neglected on and off over other musical endeavours.
Fairytale of New York because it's a good story about a failing relationship. It's the one song that gets me in the mood every year.
If you care a lot though try find the radio edit or whatever though cos there is an F-slur in it. I personally don't mind because it's part of the horrid downfall but if you are particularly sensitive to that then try and listen to the song anyway.
Tre Pepparkaksgubbar, not because it's a good song. It's not, but because of tradition. My family is Swedish-American, and we've been very active in the Swedish-American community, and during christmas time we go to a julbord and do other Swedish cultural events. One of my favorite of these events as a kid was when the Pepparkaksgubben showed up to the annual julbord, wherein a group of college aged people charge into the room dressed stupidly, sing the linked song, do some silly dances, and throw candy around. It was even more fun as a college aged person, because it's customary to be absolutely blitzed while performing as a Pepparkaksgubben.
Sub-zero take: Christmas Time is Here. Or Linus and Lucy if it counts.
I love Messiah, fight me. It's even more fun to sing than it is to listen to. And yeah, some of the solos aren't my favorite, but the choral music is loads of fun. A favorite solo Christmas tradition of mine is to listen to Messiah while reading All Seated on the Ground by Connie Willis. What's that about, you ask?
Christmas? ✔️
Choral music? ✔️
Aliens? ✔️
I hate christmas music in general but I like this one for some reason
