Wonks, plz help me out. Is this abnormal, or is it just that the dems are feckless losers (and don’t want to block all the ghoulish shit the republicans did when they held the majority)?

After months of fighting over the checks we end up with $600 that could have started going out next week. Last minute Trump throws a hissy and we get the possibility of $2000 checks but with both parties kinda looking at each other dumbly because neither really wanted that. They tried to cast blame and opportunity for either side to shoot it down. Pelosi called a unanimous consent vote which means even one nay could end it. That way she could bait Republicans to saying no and then get two wins. Not getting the checks she doesn't want, and then blaming Republicans for not getting the checks. Republicans obviously don't care how ghoulish they appear. They know the little piggies will love it anyway. So they can claim Dems were just holding up the $600 by throwing out unrealistic last minute additions. Neither party wanted to stay over Christmas and Bernie was threatening to hold the Senate over the holiday. Now there's no point because the House has to come back Monday with a new rewrite that includes a clean $2000. The can is kicked a little further down the road. The checks aren't going to be out for at least another two weeks. Congress gets to go home.

    What a fucking shit show.

No he didn't. He's been fighting and arguing for 1200 for weeks, but there's only so much one senator can do.

Yeah fr. He lost, and all of us who put any work into getting him into the presidency lost that chance with him. Maybe he's doing the best he can, maybe he isn't, but we're the ones who have to move on.

I feel like there are a lot of folks who don’t know the difference between giving up and losing. Bernie didn’t give up on stimulus checks, he lost. The $600 check bill passed like 91-6. The most Bernie could have done against it would be minor delay tactics.

He said he'd shut down the the most recent bill if they didn't give $1200 in it. They gave out $600 and he didn't filibuster it. Whether you agree with him or not, he didn't do the thing he said he'd do which was in his power.

Of course, but have they always just been able to say “no we don’t approve of this coming to a floor vote” and just haven’t!?

I think she’s actually going ahead with a roll-call vote on Monday. She couldn’t do it today because I think the house has to be in a regular session rather than a special session or some weird wonky shit. But there Will be a roll call vote Monday.

they didn't block the entire policy they just blocked it happening via unanimous consent, delaying the process

Nancy deliberately set this up as a unanimous consent vote knowing full well that it would never get passed that way so she can blame the Republicans for her shortcomings

Republicans are already claiming it didn't pass because the Democrats blocked it.

The house isn't in session just now so basically this bill needed unanimous consent. Meaning any individual could black it. When the house is in session they can vote normally

The Democrats could still pass it, the GOP just blocked an attempt to fast-track it.

It’s dead in the Senate regardless.

EDIT: Democrats will pass it on the 28th, the next day Congress is in session. Today’s stuff was just a stall tactic.

It doesn’t run out before they’re back in session but if Trump doesn’t sign the bill they have absolutely no plan to prevent a shutdown.

Congress has a few different ways of approving legislation, one of which is just asking if legislation can be approved by "unanimous consent" where they just call for the yeas and nays and then typically say the yeas have it. To approve a call for unanimous consent the house minority and majority leadership have to approve the vote. The house minority leader (Kevin McCarthy R-CA) was not present because it was a pro forma session which means "for the form" or "for the formality" (typically they don't actually do anything during these sessions). Of course late yesterday evening McCarthy said he wanted to change some of the foreign aid spending in the omnibus bill so it's possible Pelosi sundowned before he said that and when they reconvened this morning she was like "where's Kevin?"

This was the strategy all along though. Approve minuscule amount of relief, receive massive backlash, Trump gets to look good calling for more relief, Republicans get to block all relief, and hold the government hostage into the start of Biden's term with stopgap spending.

Edit: My bad that's a voice vote, there is no vote by unanimous consent. They just ask if there is any objection.

The conservative Australian government gave out like $40,000 for workers who couldn't work and $25,000 extra for welfare recipients, as well as getting in an additional 5,000 staff into welfare administration to handle the surge in demand.

How often are they trying to pass stuff my unanimous consent where one person can block it?

EDIT: Thinking about it more, this seems like meaningless bullshit the Dems did on purpose knowing that, because of the way they did it, it only took one person to block it. Mind the kayfabe, folks.

I guess I read it as McCarthy needed to approve in order for their to be a unanimous consent vote, so it didn’t even receive the voice vote

I think its that everyone present has to agree and anyone can block it. I'm thinking the Dems did it this way in purpose so they could look good.

We need to end the war on christmas. There is a Marxist war on christmas. Radical socialists want to deprive you of your most sacred shopping trip of the year by giving you money that we do not want to give you. You cannot afford food and are about to be homeless and now there's no money for gifts, but here's some christmas in the wealthiest nation on earth.

    God damn America.
