I read a little bit of it and they shocked people before they entered the room, so they knew what it would feel like already. Which to me, makes it better, because I'd totally shock myself too if I got bored

Look I love being alone in room silently. I'll stare at a wall for an hour and not complain, I'm an introvert I love it. But if you give me a button that shocks me, I'm not gonna not press it.

For the control each of the people had been given a sample shock and reported they would pay to avoid being shocked.

“self-administer at least one electric shock during the Thinking Period

Yeah yeah, as men, we would rather shock ourselves than be alone with our thoughts, we get it

I’d probably do it, there’s some kind of call of the abyss that brings me back to 12 year old me touching an electric fence for fun.

Okay i understood this and wondered why the woman percentage wasn't higher, because i'd totally shock myself just to see how strong it was. Then i read that they were each shocked once just to demonstrate. In that case, what the fuck??

Let's give the shock a nob that goes up to 11 and get a normal distribution on this.

Makes sense since women generally have a lower tolerance for experimentally induced pain. For some reason I always heard it was the reverse but according to pubmed, that’s not the case

pfft dangerous, it's just a few extra electrons. The key is to press it a worrying amount of times until you make the people doing the experiment concerned enough to get you

This is a flawed study because I'm pretty sure even if the 15 minute thing wasn't involved at all and they just told them "do you want us to give you a PAINFUL shock?" most dudes would say FUCK YEAH BRING THE PAIN I'M SO MANLY RAWR I'M NOT AFRAID OF PAIN LIKE SOME KINDA PANSY

Everyone got to try the shock first so it's not that they're curious of how it feels
