I read a little bit of it and they shocked people before they entered the room, so they knew what it would feel like already. Which to me, makes it better, because I'd totally shock myself too if I got bored
Apparently one candidate shocked themselves nearly 200 times.
but what would clear my head better than a nice little painful eclectic shock? maybe i should start incorporating that into my meditation....
Knowing myself I would meditate on the purpose of the button, and from there I have about a 50/50 shot of deciding either A.) "This button is of no consequence" or B.) "The only way to truly understand the nature of this button is to press it."
Knowledge is a matter of science, and no dishonesty or conceit whatsoever is permissible. What is required is definitely the reverse--honesty and modesty. If you want knowledge, you must take part in the practice of changing reality. If you want to know the taste of a pear, you must change the pear by eating it yourself.
Eat the button
Knowledge is recognizing that the button exists; wisdom is eating it.
Look I love being alone in room silently. I'll stare at a wall for an hour and not complain, I'm an introvert I love it. But if you give me a button that shocks me, I'm not gonna not press it.
For the control each of the people had been given a sample shock and reported they would pay to avoid being shocked.
That would depend on how much money and if the shocking would continue until I paid up
“self-administer at least one electric shock during the Thinking Period”
Yeah yeah, as men, we would rather shock ourselves than be alone with our thoughts, we get it
I’d probably do it, there’s some kind of call of the abyss that brings me back to 12 year old me touching an electric fence for fun.
Okay i understood this and wondered why the woman percentage wasn't higher, because i'd totally shock myself just to see how strong it was. Then i read that they were each shocked once just to demonstrate. In that case, what the fuck??
Let's give the shock a nob that goes up to 11 and get a normal distribution on this.
A substantial fraction of subjects shocked themselves multiple times.
Oh shit oh fuck I'm gonna shove this in my girlfriend's face, thanks.
This whole thread feels like highschool all over again :fidel-cool:
maybe it's ADHD maybe it's that I'm a guy, maybe it's both but I couldn't imagine sitting their silently when their is a fun shocky thing right there
pfft dangerous, it's just a few extra electrons. The key is to press it a worrying amount of times until you make the people doing the experiment concerned enough to get you
This is a flawed study because I'm pretty sure even if the 15 minute thing wasn't involved at all and they just told them "do you want us to give you a PAINFUL shock?" most dudes would say FUCK YEAH BRING THE PAIN I'M SO MANLY RAWR I'M NOT AFRAID OF PAIN LIKE SOME KINDA PANSY
Everyone got to try the shock first so it's not that they're curious of how it feels
I'm one of the lame guys. they already knew what it was like and still wanted to get shocked again? thats amazing
Seriously!
I am completely baffled by all the people saying they'd do it too.
Actually, that I kind of understand--curiosity will getcha sometimes. But these people already were shocked before they went in the room, so they already knew what it would feel like!
