I just want to explore the universe but without FTL spaceships I would need to stay alive for a very long time

or we get FALGSC future where death becomes a socially and culturally pressured choice where those that choose immortality are considered weird and quirky.

I wouldn't exactly bet on immortality but it's not out of the question that we'll have the technology to extend our lifespan by quite a bit.

It's not gonna be for your personally though, just for rich people.

To my knowledge nothing so far discovered has extended our lifespan. So far we've only figured out how to stop a lot of things from prematurely ending a life.

Anti-aging science is starting to rev up tbh. We've already effectively de-aged rats and cell cultures. Extrapolating that to humans is a ways off, but not impossible by any means.

According to Buddhist teachings I'm already immortal because there was never an "I".

Jesus says you will be saved. Mohammed says you will see paradise. Padmasambhava takes a hit off a fat blunt and says nah bruh you won't exist after you die but that's cool because you never existed before you died either.

Someone will definitely. Elon or Bezos or Prince William someone at that level of wealth or notoriety will definitely live to 150 or 200. “Ammortality” research is kind of kicking off now with a ton of research on senescence pathways and even anti-aging vaccines, on top of digital stuff which I think might at least create a curated simulacra of personality.

You and your kid’s life expectancy will probably stay the same or go down though with climate and economic instability. For moral purposes mostly though, can’t just let everyone live forever, unproductive overpopulation population bomb brave new animal farm blah blah blah.

Edit: This is not to say billionaires will have anything to do with the ability to live forever. We just live in a society where they will benefit most from it and can stand to pull up the ladder behind them.

The "elites only" narrative makes no sense.

Firstly, biomedically it's not possible to develop a treatment with just one subject or a few.

Secondly, commercially it makes no sense to severely limit your market. When cars, the internet, televisions, planes, were invented, they weren't limited to the elite; they were launched to a mass market.

Zolgensma, a gene therapy drug that treats the most common genetic cause of infant and child death, costs $2.1 million dollars for a dose. The disease in question affects 1 in 10,000 babies.

Zokinvy costs it's users around $86,000 per month, and it's used to reduce death risk in those with progeria, which affects around 1 in 18 million.

You can absolutely launch a drug only affordable to the billionaire class, or targeted at an incredibly tiny population. Whatever the market will bear, right?

It's 100% going to be a financial instrument. They'll turn you into what you are to them: a token to be bought and sold, exploited and discarded.

We will probably segue into a new form of being that neither I nor probably anyone else today could comprehend.

    And that's okay.

The soviets did increase lifespan by a ton. By ensuring healthcare, childcare, women's rights and good nutrition for the population.

I was following r/longevity for a long time. Their idol (Aubury the Grey) was found to be a sexual predator.

Entire place defended him. They cared more about his image than scientific progress. We're all going to die of old age.

Yep, subreddit wasn't great before but after that stunt, I (and many others) lost all hope that the place was going to be anything other than rapists jerking off to the fantasy of living forever, and left. The fact that there's nothing left but a bunch of techno-feudalists bullshit is completely unsurprising, because those were the people who never gave a shit about the science in the first place.

I can safely say that I hope all get that sexy robot body that say they want, then realize that "oh shit, actually this isn't awesome, being a robot is actually a really shitty existence" and have to live with that pain forever. Meanwhile I'm going to die, my soul will go to hell and my body will become plants and that will be all that I ever have to think about it.

I hope it's more ironic they get to be a robot but as a robot they can't sexually assault anyone

That's just one of the many reasons being a robot would suck for them. I could list countless more.

                • Robot body parts are way less flexible than human body parts

                • Human body parts are also far more energy efficient

                • Food is far more calorie-dense than any electrical storage

                • Electrical storage breaks down relatively quickly requiring replacement

                • Ads directly into your brain

                • Imagine getting hacked

                • More than likely you will be a slave

                • Society will become more progressive, leaving your "anti-SJW" views extremely outdated

                • Forget getting hacked, corporations will reprogram you and you will willingly accept it

                • Tracking cookies built right into your brain

                • Single cosmic ray hits your brain processor. You no longer exist

                • Single cosmic ray hits your brain processor. You are now corrupted

                • LITERALLY can't log off

                • You'll last like a week, realistically. Nobody cares about your egoist ass enough to save you when things break

                • You can literally be banned from life

                • and finally: literally incapable of feeling happy

I'd rather live in a society that provides an old age with dignity and community. Extending life past what we consider old age now doesn't really attract me--the rhythm of life is good to me, even though saying goodbye to those you love is painful.

Yeah that's where I land as well. I totally get the wanting to explore the universe thing. There are few things I want to know more than the secrets of space and time. I suppose until we can expand humanity into the solar system (and probably even then) we're looking at such a finite amount of space and resources that I think it's better that we each get our time on earth then move on for the next generation.
