Previous megathreads:
Some leaked memos apparently say Putin is expecting the war to last 2 weeks. Just purely looking at the technical side (not morally), it would be amazing if that happened. It would be faster than the US invasion of Iraq with a lot fewer civilian casualties.
The double standards are pretty funny from an aloof point of view. The “lightning war” in the Gulf still took months. Baghdad didn’t fall in the Iraq War for over a month even with no restraint of firepower for civilians.
But apparently Russia has “stalled”
The claimed source for the 2 week plan is that Ukrainian military captured some documents from a contingent of Russian soldiers.
The main reasons to take this with a grain of salt are that Ukraine makes shit up, low level commanders are unlikely to be walking around with high level strategic plans, and this kind of disinformation was common practice in WWII, eastern front included.
I can't see the west being over in a week, but I am not any sort of expert. At this rate, I could see Kiev, Odesa and Kharkov falling to Russian forces, and a Crimea-DPR corridor being solidified in the next week. But that still leaves the West of Ukraine. Unless the current govt is completely unable to leave Kiev (which I doubt), Lvov would become the new defacto capital of Ukraine if Kiev fell.
Depends on what their aims were. If it was to completely take over the country or topple the government (and dispose of Zelensky) then I would say it definitely is unlikely.
But this is what I read in one article:
Which, if that is indeed the final objective, they are seemingly well on their way towards completing that objective. Honestly hard to say what their aims are though. Both sides are throwing out different assertions and whatnot.
Could also be that the docs that were purportedly captured only one phase of the operation. It's entirely possible that plans for what come after haven't solidified yet.
I mean, if this was their goal, then I support them 100%, big I don't think it's the case. Like 50% of the invasion would be pointless if this was their goal. If just the control of Mariupol was their goal they could be done by now, and they could be nearly done of it was a corridor from Crimea to Donetsk. They're conducting northern invasions from Belarus to take Kiev, and fighting hard in places that aren't in the Crimea-Donetsk corridor.
Well if they adopt our strategy of post humously classifying every death as an enemy combatant then there's no civilian casualties
Unironically they will actually probably claim any civilian deaths were members of Azov or something. No government will admit to killing civilians not matter how many they do.
