    The biggest factor against this happening is whether China think Ukraine would be too unstable after this to be worth any infrastructure investment, and whether Zelensky or whoever ends up replacing him (safe Russia backed regime change) can ever be trusted as rational players

      I think the biggest factor against this happening is Russia and/or Ukraine not actually being interested in negotiation.

      True, I'm just thinking what's Ukraine gonna do after this with no military? try and join NATO? Putin will just move right back in again with no resistance. If they don't do that then there's no reason to think that Russia isn't going to do their part to maintain the peace.

            You think the US Balkanizes by 2050? I doubt that highly. There are not even clear fault lines for Balkanization even the most conservative states have like 40% of people that vote the other way and vice versa.
