I am consistently surprised at how bad libs are at noticing and peeking past the blatant contradictions involved in this war. Ukraine has supposedly killed almost 10,000 Russian troops and knocked out over a thousand vehicles, but is desperately begging for troops. Its airforce has apparently been unmatched in the air, but they're demanding either a no-fly zone or more planes. They have a supposed mystery ace pilot who can take out 6 planes in a single outing, but hasn't been seen since. The Russians have a 40 mile long convoy that's supposedly stuck outside Kyiv with no supplies so they can't move and the Ukranians supposedly have air superiority, but haven't damaged a single vehicle in the convoy.

They're blatant contradictions that clearly point to Ukraine being in trouble, and yet every lib I know is able to hold both contradictory thoughts at once. This must have been what George Orwell sincerely meant by doublethink.

Libs have been living with cognitive dissonance their whole lives just by supporting capitalism-its full of contradictions. These people are the masters of cognitive dissonance. This is not surprising at all.

I think it's just that these contradictions are so blatant. Like capitalism is inherently contradictory, but usually with just enough cover you can kinda ignore it. This though is a whole new level.

I think most libs know about the contradictions but more refuse to acknowledge them, cause it hurts the narrative. And also most people do hold some contradictory views themselves, that they are either unaware of, or refuse to confront and just accept the contradiction

When you believe that ideas are the driving force of history, and it looks like history is heading towards a dark place, you start lashing out at the idea of history taking a dark turn, rather than the material forces driving that turn.

The things they believe are just true enough for them to ignore other evidence.

Ukraine didn't immediately collapse as the Russians hoped. Some of their new anti-air has been effective. Russians currently have woeful road logistics, and are overreliant on taking railheads which Ukraine effectively destroyed.

Doesn't change the fact that Ukrainian forces, with a larger army on the front lines and broadly similar equipment, are retreating on all fronts (Except Kiev, where they're throwing a counterattack against an entrenched Russian position rn with no effect.)

Doesn't change the fact that within a few days the Russians will have encircled the majority of Ukrainian positions east of the Dnieper, cutting off half their army from the western equipment reinforcements.

Go for it. I'm no savant, anyone should be able to make these connections.

You'll likely get banned though, lol, but who hasn't at this point? I'm on my third.

BREAKING: A Canadian nuclear expert has accused Ukraine of "misleading people" about the situation at the nuclear plant and commends other experts on twitter for speaking up.

Not the only thing that they lie during this war

I've talked a bit on here about my surprisingly based landlord and tonight as I was walking to my apartment I saw him in the parking lot so we smoked a cigarette and he asked me about Ukraine. I did my best to explain things going back to pre-2014 and US support for far right groups up until now, trying to give my best "Putin sucks absolutely and I don't trust the stated goal of denazification (though I support the idea fully) but here's how this is the US fault" etc. Putting together the most nuanced cliffs notes of the situation I could based on the discussions I've had on here and the takes I've heard from Ukrainian and Russian comrades.

After about 15 minutes of just listening in relative silence, he goes "Thank you, you know I feel smarter having listened to you, and I hate to say this but, fuck the west".

This man doesn't even swear often so it was extremely funny to me.

Good comment from @AcidSmiley in another post:

if anybody wants additional sources, amnesty international already had reported in 2018 that the ukrainian government wasn't able to contain s14 and azov anymore since they were armed in 2014 to fight the seperatists in the east of the country. according to amnesty, the fascists regularly attacked roma encampments and the LGBTI scene, frequently without any legal repercussions. the number of hate crimes has increased continuously in recent years.

here's a summary of the situation (in German) from 2019:

    https://www.amnesty.de/informieren/amnesty-journal/ukraine-regierung-hat-rechtsextreme-nicht-unter-kontrolle

ukrainian fascists are also systematically recruiting German fascists for the war, reaching out to some of the worst neonazi groups in Germany like III. Weg. Here's a recent article about this (again in German): https://www.zeit.de/politik/deutschland/2022-03/rechtsextremismus-neonazis-rekrutierung-russland-ukraine-krieg/komplettansicht

and a twitter thread from one of the authors, including screenshots from telegram chats were they talked with the organizers in ukraine: https://twitter.com/christianfuchs_/status/1499431993511227401

Note that actual organic support for fascism isn't significant in Ukraine, with nazi parties not being able to gain any seats in the parliament in the last elections. that's a remarkable difference to almost any other european country.

this isn't a movement of the ukrainian people, it is obviously propped up from outside, it has already become a significant threat for marginalized groups in ukraine and now with the war it poses the danger that fascists from all over the continent go there, receive combat training, gain experience in urban warfare and export terrorism back to the rest of europe.

"NATO exists to manage the risks created by its existence."

    - Someone on twitter claimed that was a Chomsky quote, but all I can find is an attribution to a professor of European politics named Richard Sakwa. Still a good quote.

Apparently the Canadian Government is encouraging people to volunteer. The globe and mail posted a fawning article of a person STILL IN HIGH SCHOOL going to volunteer. All the comments were people encouraging this 'bravery'. How as an adult could you possibly support this? The Canadian mind is truly perverse.

If China tries to help Russia evade sanctions in the wake of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, it will face countermeasures, a senior US State Department official said on Thursday, without providing details.

If it hasn’t happened already I expect well have wapo publishing an article titled something like “Opinion: Why nuclear war wouldn’t be as bad as you think.” By the end of the month
