I propose banning all pretentious theater tier video essays and replace them with early 2010s style video essays where you complain about politics with a lot of swears and then end the video with you battling an evil version of yourself to save the planet

Apparently there’s a material reason for the length of these videos … According to Spiffing Brit, a good chunk of a YouTuber’s monetization income comes from YouTube premium subscribers, and the algorithm works out (at least as it was 9 months ago) in such a way that, the longer a video is, the more money one gets from the share premium subscription fees.

they have 11k patrons on patreon. They dont make visible the dollar amount the make a month (which is weird???) but we can safely assume they are making at least $11k a month outside of youtube im sure they could release more frequent, shorter, videos lol

We do have to consider that they have employees now (well Contra does, don't know about Philosophy Tube). I think hbombguy has a shitload of patrons as well too. The only patreons ive ever subscribed to were Chapo and Jim Sterling and both of theirs are public. (holy fuck chapo makes 160k a month on patreon still :awooga:)

for what is worth, chapo is transparent about their finance, pay their collaborators fairly and also pay their featured guests, even if will menaker threw a hissy fit about chris wade's compensation that one time, i wouldn't feel thaaat bad about giving them money on patreon. I only support hazel, that dude who's making his own branch of mupen64 and melt banana, for some reason.

I think co operative systems often work as well if not better as long as you have someone who's job it is to tell people to stope discussing and do the thing.

That said I mostly know theatre work.

Philosophy Tube has gotten a lot better recently (about since she came out as trans). Mostly just a lecture with costume changes and interesting sets, with only the occasional skit.

There was definitely a while there where her videos were like 90% art project with very little substance, but she came back around.

This seems to be kind of a shared quality among like 90%+ of all the people involved in "Breadtube", whatever we're taking that to be now. They're mostly college kids who have a personal affinity for "the left" because they still believe in nursery rhyme clichés about how "sharing is caring", or whatever. If, and when conversation ever actually does drift into questions about how political power is acquired or expended; they either begin to shrink & wilt in obvious discomfort, or put on the affect of a teacher trying to chastise a band of rowdy schooboys.

Shaun is doing pretty ok, he made a video dunking on Harry Potter which I guess you could call a radlib thing to do, but its pretty decent at pointing out how the books are cruel to their core and also badly written.

He's also been conducting a campaign against the BBC for publishing a rabidly transphobic article where they quote someone who wrote a literal genocide manifesto against trans people. It hasnt gone anywhere cause the BBC just ignored it, but hes trying at least.

Shaun's dunk on Harry Potter was also centered on the fact that it forwards incoherent liberal ideology instead of transformative change.

Either way she was right and Contra was wrong. I really think the left would be in a better position without Biden, the US wouldn't be helping Ukraine so hard, libs would be politically activated, there'd be real riots over Roe v Wade, Trump would've convinced more right wingers covid was real, more money probably would've been handed out, international incompetence would be helping the left... I can't see how things would've been worse the other way. Everything bad that has happened would have happened but it would have far better resistance to it with liberals in the opposition seat.

It's mostly expanding the existing lore of the channel, so if you do not care about ContraPoints deep lore, spare yourself the psychic damage and stop reading. otherwise, the first half hour pretends to be a debate between a radlib, a libertarian and an evangelical fundamentalist about LGBT rights, but that's mostly a setup for the radlib (Contra's self insert Justine) still not being over Tabby (a militant furry anarchist who despises electoralism and respectability politics and refused to date Justine because she's a brunch lib). Tabby then proceeds to cancel Justine on twitter, or on insta or w/e, which leads to Justine getting addicted to opioids. somehow, that is enough plot for a 50 minute video.
