I love how this show just decided to forget about subtlety and have characters look at the camera and said stuff like this

It was also the only reason I was looking forward to Jensen being in the show. My wife loves Supernatural and I watch it with her from time to time and the 4th wall breaks were my favorite. Now he's kind of doing the same thing again and this scene made us laugh so hard.

I always found the supernatural fandom to be a bit cringe but I can’t deny that it’s been one of the best shows in the last 20 years. And to come out of the CW is pretty impressive. It’s so self aware like we were rewatching it and it’s funny to see a 35 year old Jensen get treated like a 21 year old from the first seasons. I used to think he was like a stereotypical actor who was too old for his age but this becomes a gag in the later seasons.

People lining up to like Homelander at the start of Season 3 shaking hands with people lining up to like Daenerys Targaryen at the start of Season 8.

Instead of peacefully leading a massive slave revolution in Essos she marched to Westeros because "muh royally inbred and insane family".

Now all her social progress will be undone in a generation or whenever her free cities get conquered.

She had conquered Essos and (as far as the Merenese knot is concerned) left it in the hands of a “trusted lieutenant”. The Merenese Knot is GRR Martin’s problem. The show decided to cut through what will be 10 chapters of Daenerys in Winds of Winter, to go fight the real war.

I mean, he literally kills himself to avenge his brother. That's got to count for something.

              Um...

That'll be tricky since it looks like his heart gave out at the end of the last episode.

Also, not sure I'd call it "petty vengeance" so much as a belated Come To Jesus moment. He tried to do everything the "right" way in prior episodes, and Blue Hawk just ended up brushing him off and murdering a bunch of his family, friends, and neighbors. It is not unlike how every other character in the show is radicalized after witnessing a Superhero casually murder a loved one.

                There's a new episode

He tried to do everything the “right” way in prior episodes,

He absolutely didn't. That's the whole point of his arc. I genuinely can't think of a single time prior season 3 episode 6 where he does the "right thing".

                  There’s a new episode

Ah, sure enough. Still not dead.

He absolutely didn’t. That’s the whole point of his arc.

He tried to do everything the politically correct way. He goes through Vought. He asks for Blue Hawk's license to get pulled. He organizes a town hall. Etc.

Oh I completely agree, but killing Blue Hawk and a terse apology to Hughie doesn’t come close to making up for what he did.

The crippling of his brother is what sets A-Train on a new arc. That's the radicalizing moment that leads him to kill Blue Hawk. The apology to Hughie is more symbolic, indicating that he understands the damage he inflicted so casually in the first episode. And the adoption of The Boys' methods indicates that he's come around to their point of view.

Had he died killing Blue Hawk it wouldn’t have meant nearly as much.

It would have wrapped up his plotline. But I agree, it would have been an under-served character arc. Now I guess they get to run A-Train through the criminal justice system? That could be fun.

And yes I do think it’s cool how his storyline parallels Hughie’s. He started off powertripping and addicted to V, then later became radicalized by a supe hurting someone he loves. Hughie kind of went in the opposite direction, though clearly they’re both going to wind up doing the right thing at the end.

I don't know. This show doesn't seem like the type that does Happily Ever After. Hughie (and Butcher) could absolutely be corrupted by power and turn into just another soulless Super that MM has to hunt down. But I definitely appreciate the inversion of their story arcs. Its a fun narrative tool.

Well at this point their brains will be turned into swiss cheese. My money is on Butcher doing the noble sacrifice bit to make up for Lenny and Hughie.

They have 1 or 2 more doses each before they die from brain damage.

It is. Especially with giving him a new heart, probably allowing him to zip around again. Although I really wish they don't make it a simple switch, because the guy has been a total piece of shit so far.

It is a guilty pleasure that is dulled greatly for me by the knowledge that it suffers from the Rorschach problem where the themes/criticism/subtext/parody (whatever you want to call it) sails over a vast swath of the audience's head. Also, it is somewhat tiring watching terrible people be terrible; I get enough of that at work.

Still, I cannot get Soldier Boy's cover of Blondie's "Rapture" by way of C.W. McCall out of my head.

I get what you mean, someone last s2 was fb posting about homelander and he is one of those people i find...concerning.

But you can't really fix their broken brain and i'm not gonna let that detract from the fun i'm having watching this show. To me the reddit meltdown of blue hawk and homelanders is like a cherry on top to me. You feel betrayed by your favorite show? I feel betrayed and upset every day I spend in this godforsaken shithole. They can get fucked for all I care.

The show can be a little much sometimes. It's really rough around the edges.

There’s been a lot of weird, hamfisted product placement this season though. At 18:00 in the new episode theres a whole 30 second long product placement for Kirkland whiskey and it’s suuuuper awkward. There were similar scenes with other things in previous episode, and it’s always so weird. Like fully saying to the camera “Oh, Kirkland whiskey! Let me take a drink! Mm mm, I do love whiskey!”

Which i think is Costco brand whiskey which makes it extra weird

Quite a few American spirit brands are simply licenses which allows companies to put their name on what essentially comes from the same distillery. The big box liquor store I'm an on-off regular at has its own whiskey line which comes from a deal with Sazerac all the way in Lousiana, about a thousand miles from where I live. So I'd imagine Kirkland whiskey is decent but it's sure as hell a strange brand to promote "naturally" (as opposed to Jim Beam for Bourbon or Johnnie Walker for Scotch).

The subreddit somehow became really christian about redemption. A-Train got done to what he did to others, and genuinely seemed to have learned (as per e06). But when you read those replies they seem to expect him to be run over by a speedster every minute for a 100 years before the audience would consider him redeemed.

I really hated the last episode, it put me off of wanting to watch anymore. the amount of time spent on pointless exposition dumps, the amount of cliffhangers they do and then the very next episode it's like "oh no, everything was fine, didn't matter"

        the writing is so lazy...

        episode 7 spoilers

        spoiler

A Train's dead, he avenged himself by killing this racist pos! - oh nvm, he's back to life it's fine

Kimiko lost her powers, she's just a normal woman now! - oh nvm, Annie stole some compound V the next episode and all her powers are back

then the exposition-dump superhero whose only purpose was to tell us Butcher's backstory. then the basically the same thing happening with Noir where we have his backstory told to us.

I feel somewhat vindicated in my prediction that Soldier Boy would be :biden-harbinger: the same way :homelander: is a stand in for :trump-anguish: but I failed to consider Soldier Boy would be a composite character representing both :biden-troll: and :hunter:
