Independence Day in Cuba is observed each year on October 10th. This commemorates the start of Cuba's (ongoing) struggle for liberation, first from Spain, then from the United States.
The reactionary entity known as the United States of America observes Cuban Independence Day on May 20th, commemorating the date of the Platt Amendment, wherein the US affirmed its right to complete control of Cuba as an "independent" vassal of the US. It is fitting, therefore, that this neocolonial nonsense is marked each year by the denial of Cuba's independence even to declare their own Independence Day.
When reached for comment, the United States of America stated, "The annexation of Cuba is completely different from China's outrageous intrusion on Hong Kong sovereignty for reasons involving eagles and hamburgers and miles per hour and... look, it's complicated, ok, so just take our word for it?"
Today Cuba is an independent country, but unlike many countries around the world, it must fight every day to maintain its independence, against an unrelenting campaign to overtake or destroy it, including embargoes, brazen assassination attempts, external propaganda and attempts to sow dissent, sanctions, and more.

This is why I don't really talk to any other Arab people near me. Most of them are reactionary as fuck, save the general vague anti-imperialist sentiment most middle easterners share.

I can't remember who wrote about it first but there is a common phenomenon of Capitalist regimes taking socialist figures and whitewashing them. People like Martin Luthor King Jr. were outspoken socialists, but most people only know him as the "I have a dream" speech dude, or maybe the "Letter From Birmingham Jail" guy if they went to college. This repeats itself in all sorts of public figures who were explicitly socialist/communist and have had that portion of their identity purged from the common collective memory.
Anyway, all of this is to say that I was today years old when I realized that Nelson Mandela was a card carrying communist who was given a life sentence in prison for acts of sabotage against the state. Maybe I'm just dumb but that part doesn't really get mentioned all that often.

We read Fences by Langston Hughes in high school. It was one of the most boring reads of the year. The teacher had us focus on the silly metaphors and the familial drama. A few years later I found out Hughes was pretty much a communist and suddenly the play about a poor segregated black family made a lot more sense.
I just woke up (at the usual noon, lmao) to a missed call and text from my new manager: "You were supposed to be in an hour ago."
Groggily, I replied, "Today? As in Monday?"
"Yes."
"Dang, how did that happen? I'm not available on Mondays."
"[redacted] requested the 4th of July off, so we scheduled you to take her place. You still need to come in, otherwise it's a no-call no-show."
"Sorry, I can't. Monday has been my day off every single week for the last year and a half. That's when I get my son and take care of appointments and errands."
They stopped responding after that, but I'm not pressed about it. Technically I could get in trouble for not checking the schedule and seeing this, but they should've checked with me first.
