I thought until very very very recently that said football team was for Washington state, not DC. Partially because it seemed much more like Washington, especially the eastern part of the state, to be okay with that name than DC.

DC stop calling yourself Washington challenge, no one else calls you that because it’s confusing.

I believe the original idea for the state of Washington was actually to call it Columbia, but people thought it would be too confusing what with Washington DC being the District of Columbia. Good thing they ironed that out, so much less confusing now.

lmao I thought that until right now. Now the old name makes even less sense somehow.

DC stop calling yourself Washington challenge

The statehood bill calls it the "state of Washington, Douglass Commonwealth" and it's so fuckin dumb.

It should just be Douglass Commonwealth. The capital/only/coterminous city could still be called Washington, making the "City, State Abbr" form come out to Washington, DC.

And since we don't refer to states by their capital, we'd called it DC 90% of the time.

Edit: also "state of" and "Commonwealth" shouldn't go together. It's one or the other.

What statehood bill are you talking about? D.C. is for District of Columbia. Or is this bill an attempt to make it a state and rename it Douglas Commonwealth after Frederick Douglass?

          HR 51

And yeah, it's renaming it after Frederick Douglass because even libs can't deny Columbus was a horrible human being. I think Douglass Commonwealth is about the best option if you want to keep the DC abbreviation that it's widely known as.

North Koreans are said to have a personality cult around their first president. But their capital city isn't named after Kim Il-Sung...

no, the washington state football team is the seahawks. who i think also have a kind of weird relationship with the local indigenous tribes, but not nearly as bad as the team formerly named a slur

There's some speculation that cracker originates from "whip cracker" but because it was originally used by rich southern elite to refer to the poor whites thats probably not true.

Well aware, but that's not a good slur, is it?

"haha, your kind used to own people" doesn't really work to denigrate someone

I really don't think there's anything that applies to white people then, right? Since for it to be a slur, you'd kind of need to punch down, and at least in any cultural context I'm familiar with there's no situation where you could be punching down on white people in general, maybe only against some blue collar types.

On a smaller scale it could happen, for example a school with 90% black kids where white kids get bullied and no authority figure takes it seriously. On a systemic scale it's not really a thing though.

I should amend my statement credible threat of violence. Or even any history of pain

without that it's just a word like how you can call a Brit a limey and it won't even register because it isn't associated with any painful memories or fear

They could've been the Washington Hogs. That was on the table as an option and they choose "commanders" because they're afraid of being seen as weak. Dan Snyder is a fucking coward for not picking hogs. The fans would've loved it. We would've loved it. Just go to the football game and be a hog while watching the hogs. Great times hogging out at the hog game! But Dan Snyder has no spine and picked "commanders". He said the team would get renamed over his dead body and yet he's not dead. I cannot express my disappointment more greatly.

The funniest part of this which is lost on 99.99% of the population is that both have names for completely unrelated peoples, both made up by whites in order to wewuz really hard
