(The popcorn is buttered or not depending on the viewer of this post)
Edit: what have I done :oh-shit:
I do not know what the third vegan struggle session will be over, but the fourth will be nutritional yeast and crickets - Albert Einstein
It’s super entertaining to have drama with literally no stakes whatsoever.
Going into the exploding comment sections feels like entering a mosh pit
Literally two people one of whom wished for the death of another user and is still out there unbanned complaining about how unfair the mods have been
literally turning into the joker over this I swear to christ :joker-shopping:
i watch them argue and i laugh, knowing that cultured meat at large scale is already expanding at an extreme rate in china and will likely overtake traditional meat production in a decade or so with the benefit of extremely low land use for how many calories are produced while harming no animals.
oh youre saying no society has ever been fully vegan? :some-controversy:
cheer for comrades in china solving ethical issues with meat consumption
can't cheer for comrades in china because they're not comrades, they're larpers due to meat consumption
I thought we had an emoji for this but uhhh button press meme
Maybe this is kind of gross and weird, but I once had an idea for a startup involving lab grown meat where rich ghouls with too much money could pay top dollar to engage in "ethical cannibalism" by eating meat grown from the cell cultures of famous people. It would be called "Celebrity Skin", and people could order stuff like uhhhh Kobe (Bryant) steaks, and other clever puns on celebrity names that I'm not clever enough to think of.
This is clearly a joke OF COURSE but I could totally see something similar being a real thing someday.
i read a short story that involved that. its definitely gonna be a really weird bootleg thing that will pop up as a result of this tech. though people already do that shit with blood and pee so... :hillary-disgust:
stem cell research is really fascinating. i hope they refine it before im too old to get pregnant. personal dream of mine is to be the first amab trans woman to get pregnant lmao. some doc claimed its probably possible now if you had someone crazy enough to be the first person to do it and there was no legal or financial issues stopping you. im baby crazy enough for that shit
i gotta be real with you, maybe some kinks do deserve a little shame :volcel-kamala:
counterpoint: do you not want to taste the most forbidden meat of all? same cost per unit as other cultured meat & can be obtained with consent. And you might get free prions as a bonus!
Might not just be a dream people are already talking about it and making BS startups claiming they'll do it. One of our favorites from nonce island, Richard Dawkins, made a fuss about it a few years ago.
i think i've seen like one of those Senior Web Development Grad Projects websites that was basically this.
No shit? Outstanding news. This saves China a lot of valuable arable land that can be better used for more beneficial projects.
Another win for scientific socialism.
cells still obviously need some calories to grow but iirc they made some really weird concoction from plants that grow like weeds and then put it in a weird salt mix and the cells eat it up. big benefit there is those are plants we cant eat or digest easily but we can eat and digest that meat it produces from it.
they figured out how to do it without the fetal calf serum? that's cool
some do it with freshly fallen chicken feathers or fish scales iirc. new research in medical stem cell tech is what has been catapulting the industry forward. even if it werent fully vegan itd do some pretty extreme harm reduction.
nice. yeah, harm reduction into eventual harm eradication is the right way to do harm reduction.
Very interesting material, do you have any primary source materials (or secondary since it's probably in Chinese) so I can read up more on it? I might forward it to my party's agricultural commission, or just share it as cool cutting-edge stuff for agitprop.

This talks about Avant Meats in Hong Kong being cooked by chefs there. I'm pretty tired so prob sleeping soon but theres a lot of stuff out there if you search it. I know they def serve chicken for 20 bucks last I checked cause I looked up and emailed the actual restaurant that did it
I’m pretty tired so prob sleeping soon
Same, same. Work in 5 hours, so this should be my last comment. Thanks for sharing this gem of knowledge with me.

Leave you with Time being spooked by China investing in its 5 yr plan lmao
:quagsire-pog: frightened libs will be a delightful story to read when I wake up. Cya Tina:mao-wave:
i'll try to find the specific place im talking about but afaik the only places that are selling it at a decent price are in the sinosphere (re: singapore, hong kong, china, etc). most the information i posted is a little dated (2 yrs) so i'll try to find more recent numbers actually.
That's okay, it's a back burner request. You could probably make it a science post if it's more heavy on the theoreticals or a Marxism post if it's more heavy on ideological groundings.
you can get a fancy lab grown chicken meal in hong kong restaurants for 20 bucks now. its here already just its slow as fuck in the USA because of entrenched capitalists. in china however theyre always looking for ways to make food cheaper, safer, and more efficient.
20 bucks for a meal is (for the next few months lmao) still pretty expensive
no hate but it doesnt inspire much confidence unless its been consistently been going down in price
It has been consistently going down in price. A lab-grown burger cost $300k in 2013.
Probably going to be a novelty high-end vegan(?) option like Impossible Burgers were when they first started out, before they're at all widespread.
I also expect lab meat to be significantly slower to show up in the US, since the companies aren't greasing the correct palms and the meat industry is very entrenched.
Impossible isn't vegan and neither is lab meat. They both exploit animals. Expecting that these technocratic products will result in a vegan world is as wrongheaded as thinking that the hyperloop will solve transit issues or that automation will end wage slavery. It's unnecessary, expensive, a waste of resources, and a timesink. It delays what must be done for a pipedream.
We have all we need to create a vegan world now. The government should ban animal exploitation and fund plant agriculture. We need a government that ensures access to grains, beans, pulses, fruits, vegetables, funguses, etc, for all people, so there is no material need for animal exploitation.
The earth is on fire. There is no time to waste. A vegan world is something we all need to fight for to make happen as soon as possible. It cannot happen without a revolution, and these changes need to be a priority.
Okay? I was just answering the question. Everyone here already agrees that a global communist revolution is needed. Do you have a plan for accelerating that?
My point is just that lab grown meat is a bullshit red herring. It's frustrating that people always float it as a solution instead of just pushing for animal liberation and increasing access to plant based foods. And yes, we can organize and work towards the latter. We can sabotage animal enterprise, rescue those in bondage, plant community gardens and do mutual aid, among other things. These are actual things we can do instead of waiting around for a bullshit unnecessary technology that's never gonna come.
Everyone here already agrees that a global communist revolution is needed.
But most people here, as has been made clear over the last few days, want that communist revolution to be founded on slavery, not even for any practical reason, but purely for the pleasure of (themselves) the slave owners. And at the cost of the environment.
the people marketing shit like this are almost all related to the meat market. under capitalism capitalists invest in and seize control of 'replacements' of their industries.
why are plastics (oil) so entrenched in renewable energy markets? why does exxon run fucking ads about how they're Green™ now?
if lab grown meat is not blowing up its literally technical and engineering problems, not 'disruptive' capital vs. 'entrenched' capital, entrenched capital wants that artificial meat market.
its cool that prices are going down tho, maybe it'll be a common affordable thing in the future :stalin-approval:
Well, China basically invented the concept of imitation meat, so I suppose it's only fitting China would be spearheading lab grown meat as well.
I feel like I don't hear much news about the latest happenings about lab-grown meat. Is this actually something that seems legit to have at scale across the world within that time frame, or is this just something that's gonna be promised regularly for decades and always behind schedule? I feel like that shit happens all the time with technological advancements, idk.
Also, the promise of lab-grown meat should not preclude someone who wants to make more ethical choices from going vegan. Tbh, I've seen so many comments over the years from people who seem reachable who concede that they want to make more ethical choices, but then follow that up with "but I'll just wait for lab-grown meat", and that's a real bummer.
However, I still very much welcome lab-grown meat because it would be vastly more ethical than real meat and hopefully get rid of the scourge of animal agriculture/factory farming for good.
i mean yeah i dont hate on people that are vegan, its just in order to make society vegan you are gonna have to do a huge material push and if you have alternatives that makes it far easier. im not vegan myself but 85% of the time i functionally am vegan due to ptsd and anxiety making me rely on prefab meal replacement shakes which tend to be vegan. other times its usually like, milk or eggs or beans or something cheap like that because im not the richest. cooking just really takes it out of me.
and of course relying on individual decisions to end an industry has never worked ever. and neither has a fully vegan society existed, not that it precludes it. if vegan meal replacement shakes didnt exist id be mostly drinking milk. its a material thing for me.
I think someone posted the link to this a long time here. Idk if it got deleted.
Journal of Tsinghua University is the one in the forefront of my mind right now, the rest are in the bimboland amusement park rn and wont surface. They had a really good series of articles on AI built dams
Also I keep seeing people say VCJ got banned, but it’s currently still up. I just checked it. Am I missing something?
Struggle Session 1
Struggle Session 2: Struggle Harder
Struggle Session with a Vengence
I mean, there are some 1/2 days old accounts posting wrecker shit here but who knows
Everyone who tells me I'm wrong about something is an outside agitator
Lib moment
i'm just confused. is the pizza emoji vegan? should I have spoiler tagged it and included a content note? 🍕
Honestly that's a good catch. I'm sure we can get it removed in the near future.
🥪 apparently this is a sandwich but i can't tell what's on it and it probably varies by OS
honey is bad because beekeeping under capitalism is bad for the local species the bees displace and because it's abusive to the bees somehow. Scavenging honey is bad because it's theft
shrimp are just sea bugs and as a liberal I insist you eat the bugs.
can't believe bees complain about the free housing, healthcare, being moved from food source to food source, the dang ol bees get better treatment than we do :yes-honey-left:
we jest, but there are actually ecological concerns with industrialized honey production but as usual the real problem is capitalism and we could absolutely do beekeeping in a harmonious way that some vegans would probably still be mad about but reasonable ones would be fine with.
i'm :10000-com: okay with ending the worst aspects of animal exploitation but there's always things like eggs and honey where I find it equitable to end the capitalist model of production and then it's more like a symbiotic relationship and vegans seem really extreme for their refusal to consider it
like "eat the bug" meme posts, chickens will eat those bugs and fuckin' love it and make eggs for us. Oh they're bred to make too many eggs and it's bad for their bones? umm maybe don't do that? breed them to produce fewer eggs? Even if it's a much reduced number it's still better to me than "eat those bugs, peasant." Oh you 'have to' grind up male chicks? uhhh maybe don't do that? 1) they only do that now because males take a few weeks longer to get to a weight where the meat is worth it, 2) there's methods of in-ovo sexing currently available. But oh woops it costs more to do that, which is why it isn't more wide spread. I've never heard an argument against eggs that is more involved than "these problems caused by capitalism..."
can’t believe bees complain about the free housing, healthcare, being moved from food source to food source, the dang ol bees get better treatment than we do
I used to volunteer at an apiary and go to industry conferences.
Bees are exploited because they are chattel. Their health is actually put in jeopardy because we breed them with low genetic diversity (certain traits make them easier to manage, like low aggression) and so they are more susceptible to colony collapse and varroa mites and such because of our interference.
Bees make their own housing, but we often deconstruct it for our own material benefit, like stealing their wax. They gather their own food, honey and pollen, which we steal for ourselves and replace with much less nutritious sugar water, which also leaves them weaker. Stealing their stores makes it harder for them to survive the winter as well.
Being moved is incredibly traumatic for bees. Many of them die in transportation. They get stressed about being in a strange places they don't recognize. Places they are shipped to pollinate very often have pesticides. Huge numbers of bees do not survive these chemicals. It changes depending on the year, but some beekeepers lose over half their hives, thousands to millions of bees.
Bees are sentient creatures. They do not deserve to be exploited by us.
It should be removed because of the olives more than anything fuxking hate oloves
those are olives? mine looks like american style pepperoni, no idea if it's vegan or not. tbh i don't even know that when i have a real pizza
On my os theres like a strip of mozzerella?? And like two olive slices for some reason
Use the spoiler tag or something idk

I stopped visiting this site so much after the last one. I come back to check. I see again.
It was actually fine in the time between. Some people have just decided to stir it up again in the last couple days.
I got banned laughing at the last struggle session
Veganism will win in the end but not because of people screaming about murdering animals
Hexbear omnis: bullying works use it against every reaction.
Hexbear vegans: okay.
Hexbear omnis: no not like that someone call the civility police.
Don't mind me for giving a shit about trillions of sentient beings getting tortured and murdered every year. Always gotta paint the activists as unhinged and unreasonable
That's based, doesn't justify being a reactionary now though
It's reddit tier cringe for everyone involved including stuff like this imo.
I personally am bored of it. If people could find something else to struggle over that would be great
I once tried to start a struggle session against people from Boston and their silly accents, but it didn't catch on for whatever reason. Maybe another shot will get more push behind it and we can finally force those damn Bostonians to say their Rs correctly.
There's an old joke I like
You want to hear a Bostonian say a Hard R?
Tell them a black family moved in down the street
It's actually because bostonians control Hexbear dot net. Have you ever seen a post here saying how awful boston is? Exactly. :very-smart:
I’ve never met a person from Boston that I’ve liked. They’re all awful. Cursed city.
We never got to struggle about kobe dying because the sub got shut down we could just go back to that
What other asinine arguments do we got I wasn't paying that close of attention back on reddit lmao
