only reactionary leftist on twitter would be mad about a country legalizing gay marriage. Its like, you didn't solve every social issue over night? Fuck you for even trying.

No there's quite a few of them. Funny enough I recognize this account since they run with the "burn everything down" anprim bandits on the west coast.

This person is scum and they're just acting like they care about LGBT people :shrug-outta-hecks:

Cuba has the best laws on the books now for LGBT people. Now I'm curious to see the implementation and the kinks.

People spend an awful lot of time railing against the state (remember the #resist movement?) only to turn and start proudly stanning for the state as soon as it does what they want. It sure does look inconsistent from the outside. If you're an anti-authoritarian, you're an anti-authoritarian. Anti-fascists don't suddenly turn their coats when the fascists nationalize all industries and put a roof over every worker's head.

It's still bad, but my understanding is that following the revolution there was compulsory military service, and those who couldn’t (weren’t allowed) to serve in the military had to work in the UMAP camps instead. That included gays, who were mistreated and discriminated against in the camps. At some point Fidel went himself to the camps undercover and witnessed that, ended up shutting them down and later apologized. Still bad like I said so I don’t want to come across as making excuses for it, but a lot of libs like to say that Cuba was uniquely horrible to gay people (I mean comparing it unfavorably to the US etc in that regard) or even say stuff like “che Guevara killed people for being gay” so I think it’s important to examine the real details of what happened.

This. Libs pretend like chattel slavery was no longer around in the US when this was happening. Castro apologized while America pretended they stopped racism and slavery.

Isn't UMAP where a lot of pacifists and religious individuals went to as well? Seemed to be a Cuban version of AmeriCorps but actually useful.

correct me if i'm wrong but LGBT rights in Cuba were already better than the US, right? IIRC trans people can get surgery and hormones as part of the national healthcare system

It’s generally one of the safest places to be LGBT but as far as I know gay marriage wasn’t legal before this referendum. A book that might have more information is Rainbow Solidarity in Defense of Cuba by Leslie Feinberg.

Trans rights were, but this is capstoning 20 years of LGBT rights law and, essentially, legally abolishing the bourgeois conception of the family in favour of a Socialist one. Literally a textbook Communist Manifesto act.

Imagine calling yourself a leftist and then repeating state department-tier propaganda about how there's no democratic participation in Cuba whatsoever.

It takes a special kind of Western anarchist lib to think that everything involving hierarchy is so bad that even good things must always have the bad hierarchies pointed out immediately and loudly.
