It has been surreal to watch 4chan, in two decades, go from a nerdy anime board where they share a picture of a long cat to somehow the place where western fascism gets created and distributed.

The HR board used to be a goldmine for collections - artists, film posters, album covers. I managed to snag an almost complete visual timeline of US / Soviet spaceflight - from the mid 1940's to the 2010's. NASA / JPL / OKB-456 design bureau concept art, magazine illustrations, detailed technical sections, photos, - tons of shit. Like, 20GB worth. Incredible.

Now it's all Taylor Swift deepfakes.

Oh yeah, there used to be so many things you could find there. Some of the most dedicated people who had huge repositories of anything you'd want. I have a happy memory from how resourceful 4chan used to be. I was into the manga artist Hideshi Hino and I asked around if anyone had an English pdf of his book "Panorama of Hell." Turns out no such scans existed, but someone owned a worn copy from 1993, they scanned it, cleaned it up in Photoshop, then just gave it out for free. It was the first scan of the book anyone knows about and I kinda feel like I was part of that, helping keep the interest alive. It was one of the nicest things anyone online has ever done for me and it was from 4chan of all places.

Aye, it used to be amazing - great shit almost every day. Someone would, just for the fuck of it, upload hi-res versions of Van Gogh paintings or Frank Lloyd Wright's drawings for his projects.

NPR has a ton of articles advocating eating bugs but are :shocked-pikachu: when people think there's an agenda to push eating bugs.

    https://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2018/07/16/628989973/many-of-our-ancestors-ate-insects-so-what-s-bugging-you

    https://www.npr.org/2019/12/24/791030172/companies-face-an-uphill-battle-trying-to-get-americans-to-eat-bugs

I like how this one presupposes that eating bugs is good and necessary: https://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2019/01/10/677826823/should-hyping-edible-bugs-focus-on-the-experience-instead-of-the-environment

Eating bugs is good (at least compared to cows and pigs). This is my agenda. I think it's ridiculous that eating bugs is somehow more dystopian than shredding chicks.

It’s because rich people are advocating for it and you know they won’t be eating it. It IS dystopian because they have 0 plans on changing the status quo, just yours. Fascists just think it’s Jews and communists at the WEF and not ivy league bankers and “economists”. Also, right now in western countries, it’s mostly psychopathic bazingas who want “efficient” food like soylent where you can quickly consume nutrients and get back to work, and not an actual meal. Is there anything more dystopian than sipping some roach juice or cricket bar for 30 seconds and going back to hauling amazon boxes for another 8 hours?

You want me to eat the bug? Fine. But Jeff Bezos better be eating Wagyu cockroach too.

You can't really rationalize it, most people (myself included) dislike the concept because bugs are fucking gross. If I wouldn't touch it with my hand while it's alive I wouldn't want to eat it. And yes I know this is kinda childish.

I feel that way too, but if someone made something out of crickets that didn't look like it was made from crickets I would totally eat it.

it's going to be so wild when it's 2050 and 95% of people are eating bug burgers or bug tacos just because it's $1 cheaper and there's a weird fringe minority of losers who keep telling everyone they're being forced to eat bugs but nobody gives a shit it tastes like any other random meat.

Cricket flower is pretty chill and can be used in p much anything as a cheap healthy replacement for other sources of protein. It is currently cool and way overpriced but switching to cricket flower instead of pink Slime for all your vague proteins will do more than any "consumer choice" type activity in terms of improving the world situation

There are beautiful regional dishes worldwide made with various insects, annelids and mollusks. Few of them require grinding them into a dystopian protein slurry.

    Conspiracy theory?

They've been saying it openly that they want people to eat bugs. I know its been signal boosted beyond its initial reach but backtracking to "no we never said that this is all a conspiracy" just looks bad.

the conspiracy theory is the part where a shadowy [some random words that means "The Jews"] gives a shit whether you purchase steak burgers or cricket burgers in the meat section at kroger

Oh right. Cause like, if I were to say "the ruling class wants us to eat bugs" I wouldn't think that I'm saying anything conspiracy at all. They do. They've been saying that's what they want quite openly in their media.

Just a bit confused how this can all be like "nah this is wrong actually this never happened".

Seems to me that the negative social reaction among fascists is causing a backtrack... I think the biggest disappointment I have in this is that it's phenomenal propaganda and should have served the left but I understand why a portion of the left didn't jump on it because climate change, food sources and not being opposed to change that would feed people.

“the ruling class wants us to eat bugs”

im not particularly aware of this actually being true, at least beyond maybe a random interview of someone like Bill Gates having a loose shower thought about food security.

I feel like if I tried to do exhaustive research myself, I'd get 99% of results that say “one random vaguely wealthy person wants bugs added to existing menus” (which is categorically different) therefor it's 1984 big corporate left dystopian conspiracy forced to eat buggos.

I thought it was something about a more sustainable farming model, like cultivating protein via a certain species of bugs might be more efficient than doing it via chickens and cows. Selling bugs (outside of certain cultures) would be pretty hard so it's assumed that the bug protein would be processed into nuggets or something.

Nah "the rich unironically want us to eat bugs" is extremely effective propaganda. People find that shit gross. You can absolutely rile up a fuck load of people with it. Even around here on Hexbear you'll get a tonne of people that find this idea absolutely fucking disgusting and are absolutely against the idea.

Yeah but it's not real. A couple cranks have suggested it as a novelty or for specific situations where it might possibly be useful. There is nothing anyone has said about eating bugs that's actually objectionable (except that :im-vegan: is a better option). And to the vast majority of people it comes across as terminally online conspiracy brained bullshit (because it is) and it's a much better position to mock these people.
