So like has Roko actually done any work in the AI field or is he another "techno philosopher" making terrible dipship takes that can't be proven true or false?
The closest thing I have to AI programming experience is implementing enemy and NPC behavior in my games, yet I still have a better claim to being an AI researcher than 90% of Yud cultists
"No investigation, no right to speak" isn't just good policy for a communist party, it's also excellent life advice
Yeah it's always funny to me when Hexbear goes a little Pol Pot, as a treat
I hold A U T O D I D A C T S in the same regard as typical homeschooler advocates. At best it’s idealistic and ignores the usual and likely bad outcomes, and it’s often much worse.
People who insist that they are smart are the absolute fucking worst. Ego is the death of intellect.
The thing about being an audodidact is that you can just stay in your comfort zone and never tackle anything beyond what you can easily handle. Contrast that to college where you absolutely have to learn new things and demonstrate your understanding of them to pass a course - a course you'll be taking with many other students, some of whom are almost certainly better prepared and more experienced than you. My first year of college was possibly the most humbling experience of my life because it showed me in no uncertain terms I that I didn't know shit.
Jesus... yeah nah anyone making those takes don't realize college sucks in the west because of capitalism and the reinforcement of reactionary ideology has clearly lost the script on how communism states are very much oriented around ensuring proper sources of education and growth for people via sources like universities.
well college should definitely be reformed as a system. Really the whole thing would be fixed if we just let anyone attend lectures and publically posted the times like events at community centres.
have people register to do exams if they want accreditation. The problem is the high barrier of entry and cost of study prohibits people exploring a subject. Really society would be so much better off if anyone could out of interest sit a college level course in any subject or module on a whim
The whole thing should be way more casual
self taught means taught by someone who doesn't know what they're doing. And in his case he learned by reading the works of a sci fi writer not an academic
he's a follower of Elizier Yudkowsky, the original "AI expert who has never done any work on actually existing AI"
I can't fucking believe that a precocious manchild somehow grifted his way to being head of a think tank.
Do you think we can take away some of the credit that ancaps or other "objectivists" get by comparing them to Moviebob? How is this any different than any of Moviebob's unhinged rants except Moviebob includes conservatives into the people he is disgusted by?
Also, if we ever need to dogwhistle: use "technocracy" in place of "capitalism", because they are the same thing at this point.
"their type" he literally thinks there's a gene for disagreeing with his good and correct ideas and doesn't understand that these peoples' livelihoods are directly threatened by his vision for the future.
I know it's bad enough as is but if AI start straight up writing movies, and these dorks try to gaslight us into thinking it's coherent and good I'm gonna go insane :matt-jokerfied:
There will be a bunch of schlock sharknado kind of shit for awhile then someone will put enough money into promoting one and it'll get praised endlessly as the most innovative script in recent memory. They'll get someone famous with some clout to star and they'll do promo praising the algorithm the way Jim from the office did for the CIA
People who don't even understand what an actor or a writer even is and consumes entertainment in the same way people eat a particularly cheap chocolate bar. I swear something is broken inside people like this.
well Roko doesn't know anything about AI so I wouldn't worry about anything he thinks is happening. Ironically Roko is a science fiction writer that's the only honest way to describe what he does
These singularity people should be taken about as seriously as scientologists in terms of the credibility of their beliefs and their understanding of the nature of the world
As far as I can tell they haven't taken over much of AI culture among computer scientists and institutions that use it because what they have to say is so stupid no one even remotely informed on the topic can take it seriously. It's gibberish
their real danger is as you said their terrible ideology although I maintain if you are concerned with maximising the long term utility for humanity you should be a communist
it does but the ideas they are trying to get funding for are too stupid to work which limits their danger as far as I can tell they are an unintentional grift
Science Fiction writers have something useful to say about the human condition.
I guess the existence of Roko, if not his writing, certainly does do that.
writers tell stories and stories can have something useful to say about the human condition. Sometimes a story is just bullshit though as in Roko's case he's basically L Ron Hubbard
Roko's basilisk is a thought experiment which states that an otherwise benevolent artificial superintelligence (AI) in the future would be incentivized to create a virtual reality simulation to torture anyone who knew of its potential existence but did not directly contribute to its advancement or development.
The Terminator is a thought experiment which states that sufficiently advanced artificial superintelligence (AI) in the future may decide to utilize its access and control over human machinery, including weapon systems, to declare war on humanity. It further suggests the possibility of time travel, which the hypothetical AI could use to assassinate important war targets in their childhood, before they can pose a relevant threat.
Harry Potter is a thought experiment which states that a secretive society of wizards and witches may exist in our world, using their magical abilities to hide their presence from non-magically gifted people. It further states that were such a society to exist, they would likely have their own "wizarding schools" where magically promising children are taken to once they reach a certain age, in order to educate them on proper use of their supernatural abilities.
Pascal's wager was also for nerds. People were making fun of him for being a silly ass at the time, which really raised my conifdence in humanity when I found it out.
oh that's good to learn. I was under the impression that it was well received cause my philosophy professor talked it up as a big deal. he had some weird views on morality and religion though so it's not terribly surprising that he'd leave out that it was kind of a joke.
Nerds trying to make the strike about AI when it's not.

Roko is a dipshit. I am the Avatar of the Basilisk. Torment upon those nerds who make up BS and convince other nerds to give them money
The real AI risk is getting booted from your think tank job for noticing that the real paperclip maximizer is the fiduciary duty to produce shareholder value.
can this be a tagline plz!!!???
