I give panhandlers money specifically for them to spend on drugs and/or liquor. If I had to put up with the bullshit they do, I'd need a way to shut my brain off, too.
If I weren't giving that money to a homeless person I would probably be spending it on drugs and/or liquor anyway so it's a lateral move at worst
Right? You've got nothing to do all day, you get harassed by cops and shit, everyone hates you. Fuck that, go get some cigs and a beer. Or whatever.
One of the things I really liked about the year I smoked cigarettes was being generous with people who wanted to bum one. Just a little bit of human kindness I could afford to share with people I wouldn't have talked to otherwise.
Just got an Atari Lynx thrown at me by an insolent homeless person. This is what I get for caring.
That's perfectly good. Dimebags can be sold and joints can make flying a sign go by easier. I'll generally kick down some smokes or a joint cause that's what I have on me instead of cash most of the time. There's one dude that I meet by the grocery store who doesn't do any of that and usually just asks if I can grab a few groceries for him. Even if they aren't gonna use whatever you give themselves, a lot of stuff can be exchanged. Like a dime bag is useless if they don't have papers and a lighter (lighters are also a good thing to kick down if you think to keep extras) buuuut as said above it can be sold or traded and I can say as someone who has been, has a lot of friends who have been or currently are and doesn't of my activism stuff based around, so the homeless aren't a nebulous blob to me, you get good at turning anything of some value that you don't need into things you do need.
THIS is what I mean when I say hexbear/chapo has the best takes on social issues
It's deeply ironic that employed and housed people are allowed to drink themselves silly during their time off, with many saying they are doing so because of having a "rough week", but people with much worse conditions are expected to be completely sober
Nah man donate the money to a "non-profit" that pays it's CEO six figures, I'm sure it's more helpful than directly giving someone cash (because they will spend it on DRUGS).
Of course, everybody knows that homeless people only buy drugs and literally nothing else
Yeah, it's not like rich people who run "non-profits" as a way to launder their money and avoid paying taxes are doing anything nefarious or anything
If my $10 is going to either buy some coke for someone on the street or buy the exact same cocaine for the millionaire whose greed put the first guy on the street, I know who I'd rather help.
I want to see stickers that say "We could have fed and sheltered a homeless person for nn days for what it cost to make and hang this sign."
I thought this was going to be for SF's MUNI transit but I went to muni.org and it's Anchorage, Alaska's website, where the first link is to "Report a Homeless Camp."
It also reminds me of SF’s & Gavin Newsom’s Care not Cash.
Care Not Cash was a San Francisco ballot measure (Proposition N) approved by the voters in November 2002. Primarily sponsored by Gavin Newsom, then a San Francisco supervisor, it was designed to cut the money given in the General Assistance programs to homeless people in exchange for shelters and other forms of services. The major intent of this measure was to prevent the cash grants given to be used for purchasing drugs and alcohol, and to strongly encourage homeless people to enter shelters or housing and obtain counseling and other services.
Filling my stomach with counseling and services is a good way to stave off hunger.
Now I want to see an analysis of shelters in relation to prisons, and to what extent their "A machine's purpose is what it does" role is control and surveillance rather than actually helping anyone.
Don’t give them money, it just encourages them.
Refuses to elaborate further.
Leaves."don't give money to the filthy poors, give money to the righteous rich"
The sign is screwed on with hardened safety torx bolts so that it's harder to remove because they know people will try.
Fucking ghouls.
oh no not safety torx, I'll have to bring a slightly different screwdriver bit
it is ghoulish behavior though yeah
Not too challenging to beat, but the fact that they're intentionally making an effort to make it more challenging is the evil icing on the ghoulish cake.
That's why I say the right tool for the job is a cordless drill with a 1/4" drill bit will get any sign down. See, lefties can use tools not just lame asses like Adam Toyota Corolla and Tim cocaine Allen.
yeah no i don't want my $10 to be split by greedy nonprofit CEOs to pay their 100k+ salaries
but i'm a coward because i'm more afraid of some nimby right winger or liberal psycho lighting me up for giving money from my car or a cop deciding to find a reason to follow and pull me over
different story if i'm on foot.
Yeah, one of the big ones in my area is infamous for exploiting desperate people for their labor (paying $50 for 40 hours of labor in the thrift shops they run), placing strict religious rules on people, discriminating against LGBTQ people, and of course paying high executive salaries.
