They're supposed to "help you see better while it's dark out" but completely blinds the fuck out of you when you're on the receiving end.

They literally make it more dangerous to drive because of the brief moments they destroy your night vision and shit.

Fuck white LED headlights.

I totally love when a pickup has their phasers set to kill behind me in traffic and are offset in the lane just enough to do an egyptian mirror lighting trick with my side mirrors directly into my eyes.

I will never stop telling people they don't deserve a pickup truck unless they can obtain a license for work. They bitch about how they're safer, while it means killing the single mom in the kia rio.

The late model ford focus is an absolute crash tank, I've seen so many post accident pictures where there's zero cabin intrusion in high speed collisions and rollovers. You don't need a fucking pickup when most of your cargo goes in the back seat.

As someone that lives in a state where nearly everyone you meet drives a killup truck I absolutely agree.

      :(

I want a small truck though. Like an older Toyota. Something that's barely bigger than my car (shorter even), but has better utility.

Electric cars, modulo batteries, can also be really good in crashes.

I really don't mean 1/4 ton trucks. A utility vehicle that has a similar ride height to a car makes a ton of sense for 95% of average joe pickup usecases. Home improvement, moving furniture, bikes, engines, tools, extremely fat family members, etc can all be done in an old tacoma.

I'm talking about places where your fuel type is tied to manhood and its perfectly reasonable to want a big cummins or powerstroke just because.

I'm thinking of a very specific friend who bought a used 2015 f150 lariat with something like 60k on the clock for 27k. Its a super crew cab, short bed. The bed is useless and stays covered most of the time, he just uses the huge backseat to haul most things. He was already an aggressive driver but now that he's high up, he feels even more important than lowly pedestrians, priuses, and cyclists. He actually scares me on the road and I yell at him to chill the fuck out and explicitly tell him the truck has made him a worse driver.

I'm an outsider in the area and he's a native and the only culture there is buying things you perceive to make you happy. I love cars but I enjoy working on shitty cars far more than just owning a nice car. I got a solid deal on a new focus ST a few years ago with the intention of owning it forever and having something safe, reliable, and fun. Its just enough flash that it makes me happy everytime I get into it, but it never is a danger or a nuisance to anyone like bro-dozers are.

ugh end rant. Everytime I critique his truck he goes "well you don't need a hot hatch", as if the two things are remotely the same. So fucking frustrating.

Is it just me, or does it seem to anyone else that it's the drivers with the most MANLY OFFROAD KILL MACHINE vehicles that go over railroad tracks the most daintily? I swear, there are tracks around my house that I can take my little car over at a decent speed with no issues, and I'll watch pickups just mince their way over the things like they're going over some kind of major road hazard.

It's due to people retrofitting LED bulbs into standard halogen housings, which is actually illegal in a number of states IIRC.

Yeah factory installed LEDs are barely noticeable (or anyone who took the extra time and money to not be lazy about it)

It's because people don't aim them.

AFAIK it's a ticket in some places to not have your headlights aimed right.

This is why I hate driving at night nowadays. I get completely blinded.

Years ago, I asked my eye doctor if there was any reason why I seem to have more trouble driving at night that other people, and why I seem to get more blinded by light than other people. Turns out, I have abnormally large pupils that probably don't adjust to changes in light as well as normal ones. Cool, cool, cool. Yet another weird thing about my body.

Your body is beautiful and wonderful as nature intended, we just live in a dogshit system that prioritizes being an absolute pain in the ass to being human. Like retina-buring white LED lights on max blast.

I don't like how the yellow-orange high pressure sodium street lights are all getting replaced with white LED. The yellow color helps you tell whether the light coming from around the corner is a street lamp or another car's headlights. Also, the yellow lights don't fuck up your melatonin production at night the way white LED does

Are they oatmeal and raisin cookies? Because those sound good right now with a mug of hot chocolate spiked with some baileys.

Fully agree. I can't see driving at night well, the old headlights did not destroy night vision as much.

As someone who studies automobiles and loves cars, White LED headlights are not only blinding, they're inefficient. for the tradeoff of seeing a few more meters, you blind the other driver, and cause more accidents in the end.

Car mechanic and enthusiest here too. So there are ways to rock a set of LED's in a regular bulb housing, however you NEED to adjust you headlights to point lower since they have a broader are of light. This is where most fail after breaking shit shoving these in a housing barely made for their large size. Anyhow, the whiter/blue cool colors will make your headlights pick up all the bugs and dust so your vision has a ton of extra shit in it you dont need. So warmer lights are better for this. I had yellow low beams in my Forester for a while, i liked em and never got pulled over (looked up the law in california, its legal). My WRX has the regular bulbs in them, i like them the best.

one of the issues is that they don't take the time to actually aim and align their headlights, it's the worst on lifted trucks. if you change your suspension or ride height you need to do your headlight. Corner cutting pisses me off.

In the rural southern piece of shit town I live in every fucking lifted truck has these with their thin blue line flag or some half confederate flag half south carolina flag shit.

That's another thing. These headlights theoretically are supposed to be angled from the factory to tilt downward, so the cone of light is shining at the road, instead of straight forward into the vacuum of space, but many people who get lifts never fucking adjust them.

Many car models have a thumbscrew you can do it with. You don't even need a screwdriver or a wrench most of the time. It takes three fucking minutes, but people don't do it. It makes even less sense when it's a truck for off-roading with all the light bars and shit. You put like five extra lights on your truck and they flood everything with light. Shit is like the Christmas tree at Rockefeller. Just tilt the two lights that are always on down.
