I low key think that Traditional Chinese Medicine is going to be one of these things that gets "rediscovered". Bring it up with anyone in the West and its "rhino horn" this and "tiger penis" that. But they never acknowledge that the first effective anti-malarial drug was discovered basically by referring to the herb used in a centuries old TCM treatment.

Western traditional medicine also had working stuff along with the poison, for example aspirin. So I'd have to hear more before believing Chinese traditional medicine isn't also 98% trash

Ursodiol is just bile, nothing specific to bears in it. I assume TCM has much broader uses too.

I strongly encourage China simps not to read books written in China. The Chinese censorship apparatus is not strict enough; you will get triggered by domestic critiques that sound exactly like the commentary you think only comes from Western anarchists on twitter. I particularly warn you against reading Lu Xun and Yu Hua's perspectives on greed and ambition in their respective periods of China's history, and then considering just how little has changed over the course of the PRC's reign.

Yes, exactly. Not only was he a great writer (worth reading on purely literary grounds) he also accurately predicted many of the pitfalls that the left in China would face. The lessons he drew from the Xinhai revolution are useful to understanding the failure of Chinese communism (and a hell of a lot more well written them most texts in that line).

How dare you! Because China has achieved the immense accomplishment of simply not being as bad as the US, China should not be criticised.

I don't think the person who brought him up was implying his writings were supposed to be contrary to the PRC. I think they were bringing him up to make the point that his critiques are very similar to those of the more modern writer they brought up.

100% this, the chapo sub was considerably more critical of China before all the sinophobia took over the website during the HK protests. A lot of western communists were critical of China, just because in some ways it's better than the US, in a lot of other ways it's really not special in any way other than it's size.

Cuba is like actually a model I'd want to see my own country make efforts to adopt, I don't really feel the same way about modern China.

My entire life i've only ever been told about China as though they are some genocidal Nazis, and everything in the west you ever hear about China is how they're evil and shit. People being interested in learning more about the largest socialist state in the world on a leftist site you think is weird? You can find plenty of negative things about China everywhere, how is it weird to actually want to learn and engaged with other things?

Maybe it's an age thing. There is a little period where the sinophobia cooled down. I grew up hearing China forces everyone to abort their second child. It was common knowledge. I also heard all about the terrible suppression of falun gong. However, I disliked our own right-wing religious fundamentalists so much I couldn't help but wonder if China was on the right track.

Yeah, it's the thing I hate most about this site for sure. Gotta just ignore all the cringe. They seem to swarm their own posts though--on a thread about a non-China topic, you wouldn't be getting as many downvotes. It takes a special kind of "became a ML through youtube videos" energy to honestly think China in 2020 is "actually existing socialism" that needs to be coddled on chapo.chat. The type of person who enthusiastically defends the economic system that created Foxconn and Jack Ma is not really worth thinking too much about, but my diagnosis would be that they really need to have a hero to root for (natural since many people view geopolitics as a sport) and can't quite wrap their mind around the fact that we are as close to socialism as a peasant in the Great Peasant War was to capitalism [insert Brace rant].

          Downvotes below please, thank you!

You and I don't get it. I'm told we're being idealists. If we understood the immortal science of Marxism -Leninism, we would be able to view things from a materialist perspective, and we would understand that socialist states are not judged by their economic systems as they currently are, or the actions that their leadership have taken to date, but instead by the intentions Youtube Marxists and state television ascribe to the country's leaders. Unless we have access to Xi Jinping's diary, we'll never be able to argue that China is anything less than Actually Existing Socialism.

I got an insanely spicy take to counter that assertation:

You can do bad shit in service of a "greater goal". Doesn't make the bad shit not bad

FFS the guys who nuked Hiroshima and Nagasaki and firebombed cities all over the world thought they were doing it for a "greater good". You can do some pretty fucking heinous shit so things will be nice tomorrow

See, the tragedy of this website, is that because I agree with you and have expressed similar opinions before, I can verbatim predict how the Foxconn brigade would respond. (Something like "you're a western chauvinist projecting western imperialism onto China, they would never nuke anyone ever, I know because they said so on the floor of the UN and no one has ever lied there. Here are 500 tweets by Max Bluementhal to prove my point.")

Sigh. Maybe I need to avoid these threads until the average Chapo user is less terminally online, but I'm hesitant to do so because I feel like letting China simps clog up the homepage with CGTV clips without any debate is how sites like this end up being dead end forums with like five Red Guard posters and five FBI agents.

outside of main it's pretty good. Just wait it out most of em are acting up because they feel people are unfair to China so they take up a contrarian position where China is actually perfect. It's like when people discover that like, America didn't solo WWII so they then think that it was entirely the soviets that did literally everything. Second opinion bias stuff
