Idk man until virtual reality really takes off i just think web forums are doomed, especially in the wake of the recent coup attempt. People want a simulacra of communitas and end up just self sabotaging like all western leftist groups, when they should be drinking cum in a trash fire. I challenge everyone here to read a book, do a situp, and go outside.

Right now, I don't think that I can tell people in good faith that this is a healthy community to come to.

What happened to federating with Lemmy? That seems like the best way to grow. As I understand it, it allows people to make new sites if they don't like the vibe of this site, while still remaining connected to posts or people they might like. Do I have that right?

I agree a lot with this. There is tons of "we need to make this community like this or that" and it feels weird because it's not really a community. People just want to chill and that's really the main aim any forum like this one should keep in mind, and neither bigotry nor non stop drama are good for that (not saying that to oppose the claim growth should be happening, it really should and it's a fair point). It's really become much less enjoyable to be around. At first I was a bit sad about some users (both trans users who were upset about the whole thing and users who were unfairly banned who just got pissed about the whole thing and left after getting unbanned anyways) leaving, but now? I don't care, like, wtf are they missing out on by not being here any more? And what are we missing by them not being around if all the discussions are just shit drama? I left too for a couple weeks because the atmosphere was getting gross and mean spirited and I made the mistake of letting it get to me, now that I'm back (thanks Capitol riots) everything looks so stupid.

At this point I kinda support just closing it down for 3 days or whatever just so people log the fuck off for a while and then aggressively pursue new users.

I want to laugh at funny memes that make fun of the awful world we live in, crack jokes with people with similarly morally calibrated senses of humor, get leftist news about events and places I wouldn’t get otherwise (something that has massively dropped off from the sub to this site, I might add) and get dopamine rushes from sparkly big number on bear.

As do I, and us all. That shared desire we have is what unites us and makes this website a community. A community is just a group of living things with commonality. Furthermore, all of those things you and I like to enjoy rely on there being other people here to share them with us. New users mean new and more varied (better) content so growth is very important. You say we don't have as leftist much news, something I also wish there was more of here, well that's a growth problem.

Now I'm not also not sure what makes a community "healthy" or not, but I know if a community stops growing it withers and dies.

Fair enough. It seems like it would be a lot easier to make that place if we federated. I think. I admit I'm not 100% clear on how that works so maybe I look like a huge dumbass.

I just made an account on lemmy.ml, and there's a lot of leftist news there.

I think people are being way too fatalistic over this shit. It's not the end of the world.

This kind of shit happens occasionally to online communities, it's probably going to die down when admins figure out the right countermeasures and trans people are gonna start coming back.

Remember that this is a brand new community, there's still a lot of them dialectics to do.

Yeah, it's a problem and it sucks but I do think we have good leadership and a good userbase overall, so I think we'll probably figure it out soon. It just sucks seeing comrades leave in the meantime

More than that I don’t want a community that chews up and spits out it’s most caring and marginalized members just so we can get our slop

Even if it was higher than it’s ever been, that wouldn’t be good

I frankly don't relate at all to the desire for growth. Quality over quantity, and we can have high levels of activity with a few people as well. Oh well

I think there's two types of people here. Those that see this as a vessel that will be beneficial to the left and those that just want a cozy close knit community. Those two groups are disagreeing with one another as one wants infinite growth while the other just wants to grill.

I'm firmly in the infinite growth camp. Growing the number of communists ought to be the target of any communist.

I mostly agree, but growing a quality community and fostering a communal culture is critical. Growth should be a measured process.

Yeah but I mean without considering the numbers that would be triggered specifically by election night.

The site is consistently putting in 900+ members online right now at peak and it's clearly been below that for a while. The numbers are up.

Unless we as a community can come up with some way to come out of this round of drama more resilient, this place is likely going to be on a long decline.

The chuds and wreckers are looking at this and dreaming up the next wedge they can drive into this community, again and again until there's nobody left.

    • blobjim [he/him]
      ·

So leave the moderation to the moderators. Wreckers want to get people attacking each other and being paranoid. I think the aim of an online community is to have the "party line" be the dominant voice, and making sure that good posts drown out bad ones.

So leave the moderation to the moderators.

        This.

It is extremely-online-shit to be obsessing over moderator actions and usually the people doing so just want to stir shit or want to be moderators themselves. That's not the case only here but in any online community.

Tbh, I don't think chuds and wreckers are needed, these types of circles have a tendency to self-implode out of their own volition. I would get into the reasons for this but would rather not.

Maybe we shouldn't see this site as the 2nd coming of Jezus. And just for what it is a forum where you can entertain yourself, have a discussion, see some funnies.

But if this thread is the vibe on here right now. It will most certainly die out. Broken window theory and all that stuff.

The cumtown, where ever the fuck wreckers were from, they won. Pat yourself on the back for that one. You really changed to world by wrecking on here.

I feel like I am getting too old for this shit.

If this community is so fucking horrible just end it then.

Continuing my tired wordvomit. Now that I am annoyed enough to vent about it.

First of all. The visitors who are here for fun don't need to be constantly reminded of moderation decisions and the meta drama bullshit of users. It kills the site. This place stops being a fun forum and becomes a warzone for meta drama bullshit 99% of visitors don't give a flying fuck about.

Second of all. We need better ways of protecting yourself. Block lists, filtering. Basic shit any social site has nowadays so you can fucking decide yourself what shit you are tired of seeing.

We need IP bans. It's not perfect but it will make ban evasion more annoying. Annoying enough to weed out at least 10% of wrecking assholes who are too dumb or lazy to bother with vpns.

I'm tired but maybe I'll finish my thoughts on a few other posts later.

Speaking of bans. There are definitely more than a few instances where bans were just uncalled for and It only served to escalate things further. Note: I am not talking about instances of transphobia here.

We need context. We need clear rules, guidelines and consistency in moderation. When a person is banned we need to see which of those rules or guidelines were broken. We need to clearly see references to all instances that led to that decision. The current mod log is not capable of providing that. When a user is banned, and we want to actually be transparent, we need to show users the whole history of infractions with notes and context. We also need to give users a formal way to file a ban appeal.

And please cut out the snarky bullshit ban reasons. Be descriptive but we don't need "see yaaa bitch" as a ban reason. If you are that pissed off, log off. Let another mod handle it. Seriously.

I know how bad people can get. They can get really fucking bad. If it is affecting your mental health. Stop. Please take care of yourself. Let another person, less affected by it take it on.

That brings me to abuse of the mod team. There should be zero tolerance of herassment of moderators, developers or admins. There should be a formal way to complain but anything crossing the line of basic decency should not be accepted. So don't think I am letting you of the hook here, asshole user who thinks I am just ripping on the mod team in this comment. That's not what's happening. I care for this community the team and I want us to be better.

Give each other a fucking break once in a while too. Literally everyone on here has their shitty moments. Their dumb takes. Emotional outbursts. Humans will never be completely perfect.

The moments where I went too far, or reacted out of proportion. The people who were like *are you alright?' were the ones who were able too snap me out of it.

In a community like this there is bound to be a lot of trauma, depression, pent up rage for obvious reasons. I think we need to acknowledge that.

thank you for listening to my ted talk.

Wreckers has become a catch all term for groups of users that want to fuck with this site. Which are very much a real and active thing that is going on.
