"Yes we understand the problems but instead of tackling poverty and widespread hunger and pollution let's just reduce 99.999% of the population by not having babies, which is a totally sensible way to solve the climate catastrophe"

These turds all think they'll be part of the "few million" who survive and also think they'll get to maintain their quality of life, as if it doesn't currently depend on an exploitation of the global poor

Okay putting aside "2 BS degrees" his education as an environmental geologist qualifies him to tell us what happened in the past based on the geological record. It does not give him any unique qualification to tell anyone what should be done going forward.

Massive lib alert: back in the day I read Hans Rosling's Factfulness (a public health expert, funded largely by Bill Gates) and despite huge anti-communist sentiments in the book, there's actually really good discussions on this stuff. Main takeaway for me is that there are a bunch of these issues most people are just entirely wrong about (like full access to abortion actually leads to fewer abortions). The argument made in this context is that over-population is a symptom of poverty, and a reduction of poverty ends the cycle of overpopulation, which is why we're seeing massive decline in birth rates in rich countries.

So r*dditors, if you get turned on at the thought of reducing the world's population, try socialism!!

Well, they said they are an expert, who would lie about that on Reddit?

We've consumed more than 1 earth of resources.

I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but WHO THE FUCK IS "WE"???This annoys the shit out of me, there is no "we" here, motherfucker, it's the first world pillaging the rest and killing the Earth in the process. How about you take some advice from Lobster Man and clean your fucking room first?

Why do reddit nerds have such a boner for eugenics? Is it because of The Adventures(TM): End Game featuring Buff CGI Grimace?

Why do they still hold on to the "exponential growth" excuse? The population is currently increasing, but not exponentially, and will eventually plateau in the next century. Granted, the world will be a hellscape if nothing changes in 100 years, but the majority of consumption occurs in industrialized countries with lower birthrates. I can almost guarantee that this r*dditor has a greater impact on the climate than a family of subsistence farmers in Bangladesh.

Damn, we've consumed the entire Earth in the past 50 years? The very ground we're standing on must be made of styrofoam. Is the CIA working on building a dyson sphere in secret or some shit

Idk about immediately it was like an all day ordeal and there were def people yelling at them but there were plenty of people supporting them.

Not blaming anyone specifically, esp in the west/imperial core consumption is so strongly baked into existence that it's easier to come to the conclusion of less people than it is less consumption.

It's the completely wrong conclusion, but I see how they get there.

And then they go "oh cmon it's not like I'm advocating for killing people, there should just be less births and that can be enforced with greater education policies.." totally ignoring that population disparities like that are the reason why often the same sorts of people who think communism killed a hundred million billion people (that's bad, but if we do it it's heroic for the earth!!), and ignoring the psychos commenting that let the mask slip about which countries will have the lowered reproductive rates while ranting about third world parasites.

They want the population to have less people and less quality of life, but they don't want it to be them affected, nor do they wanna sign up for the right wing reproductive death squads it'd need.

Truly signs of a crumbling empire in the lack of vision and lack of stomach to face their true views.
