That game had so many awful scenes in it, like the bit where every dude at a military briefing cranes their necks to stare at Mei-Ling's butt when she crouches to pick up something she dropped

4 is utter dogshit, it felt like Hideo Kojima was sitting next to me and making fun of me for liking the first 3 games

god damn MGS 1 & 2 were such unbelievable games

I wish I could find any other games. like show me any other game with shit like the colonel A.I. speech at the end of MGS2...

yeah, it's utterly amazing that these games were made at all... and I don't know if I'll ever see anything like them again. The rest of the series following (even including MGS 3) don't even come close.

Hot brother clone fist fighting about who is the better warrior man on a nuclear mech surrounded by fire etc.

What are you talking about, there's nothing sexual about shirtless fistfighting, that's just how Real Men Settle Their Differences!

Metal Gear Solid 1 felt markedly less self-aware and ready to poke fun at itself, Solid became a much sillier character from 2 onwards (which I approve)

                    I mean, is he though?

I know MGS4 would later retcon it so he was, but in MGS2 they made a point of having him keep contacting you even after GW was destroyed. Like every other game in the series, MGS2 was originally envisioned as the end of MGS, and I don't think the intention at that time was for Campbell to have been an AI, just like I'm pretty sure that the support team from MGS3 wasn't originally supposed to become the Patriots.

the support team from MGS3 wasn’t originally supposed to become the Patriots

Ugh, don't remind me- I'm still harbouring a grudge for Kojima for that one, what bullshit

                      spoiler

Actually he did all of the characters dirty in MGS4 (sans Snake, I actually found the rapid aging thing an interesting twist)

                      I mean, is he though?

That's what Snake and Otacon think, and Raiden says he's never met Campbell in person- I never assumed otherwise. Of course, Rosemary does get switched for an AI imitation near the very end but I always thought the Colonel was always intended to be an AI all the way through

Oh yeah, they set it up so you'd think Campbell was an AI, but then you destroy the AI and he keeps talking. Which, don't get me wrong, he wasn't the actual Campbell either, but I always took that to mean that he wasn't the AI either- he was something else. I think that was supposed to be a big twist, but so many people were so checked out by that point that it didn't scan that way, and then they went on to retcon the twist out entirely.

i'm team NEVER BE GAME OVER and i genuinely believe that, given the development time, they would have given Quiet's storyline a much better ending. obviously not one that provided a good reason for the horniness, but a better one.

No Kojima, I can accept Yoko Taro’s fetish fuel in games because

        he’s honest about it.

Ngl, i am into it too

But dont try and dress up the reason with your story when you’re already stretching my suspension of disbelief

Every time i try to think how to describe sex in video games, i find myself pointing to another medium and comparing how crass that is too. But i guess kojima also wanted to say something about how sex and violence try to get engagement by being crass. They cant actually show it, and i remember MGS3 being goofy regarding the subject.

Quiet seems strange because she was the only woman character in the game until you reach the point with the XOF soldiers just like her.

I remember thinking the bottom to her bikini looked weird, like a thick fundoshi. So her character, to me, looked like someone presented to be the titillating character in a weird underwear. So she always looked awkward cause she still had to pose all sexy like.

As a kid I freaked out at the ability to shoot a bowl of ice cubes in MGS2 and they'd scatter across the bar and then melt in real time. It was the most mystical shit I had ever seen. I would play that part in front of adults in an attempt to impress them and no one ever cared lol

    • Orannis62 [ze/hir]

They wouldn't just melt in real time, they wrote a special algorithm so that ice cubes that were closer to other cubes would melt slower than ones that were farther away.

I feel like in most cases when you hear about a thing your brain takes the disconnected facts and paints a broader picture than there really is.

I think though for MGS it isn't like that.

It depends. MGSV is the latest one, and the controls are easy to get used to since its like most other third person games. MGS3 is my favourite, and is the most popular of the original trilogy. Then theres MGS1, which is the beginning of the 3d series, and is considered one of the best games of all time.

Yeah, you basically need to play MGS1 for MGS2 to make sense.

So of course, MGS2 was the only one which got released for Xbox, which lead to it being the only one I played as a kid. I was very confused.

Don't do media chronologically, that's dumb. Prequels are prequels for a reason. I haven't even played these games but I'm p sure the answer is just to play the main titles in release order, like with most things.

As others have said, just play in release order. The story is wild and wacky at times, but MGS1 is very straightforward, and MGS2 only really gets confusing if you're trying to understand the meta-narrative (you can always watch the SuperBunnyhop video for that if you want). MGS3 is also super fun and the most inward-focused of the original three, so lots of story and lore abounds for characters from the last two games.

I'm going to recommend the opposite of everyone else. I tried to get into the mgs series when 5 came out, and had a tough time.

I tried starting with MGS1, but that game is so old now I had a really tough time controlling it and it was filled with odd segments where it expects a lot more from you than many modern games. I burnt out on it and had to come back to it after playing some others to really appreciate it. If you start with 1, use a guide.

Ground Zeros is neat, but it's basically a demo for 5 which is kinda boring? I tried 5 next because it was the newest game but it's just one huge open world stealth shooter and feels empty otherwise. Its quite long and I got just over a third of the way through the main story before burning out due to lack of interest.

For me, third try was the charm and I emulated peace walker which I really enjoyed. It's shorter and simpler than 5, while not being quite as old as 1, and maintains a decent story focused on imperialism and the use of MICs and the like. It also takes place immediately before Ground Zeros so it was cool to see familiar characters and work towards where you will start in 5. I played 3 immediately after Peace Walker and enjoyed it for similar reasons. It was more concise, not ancient, and had a more compelling story.

TLDR: I recommend trying the games chronologically, as it helped me get invested with the series enough to work through the jank of the old games and the unpolished bloat of 5.

play them in release order starting with MGS1, or with the MSX games if you like older games. idk why people sometimes suggestion playing them in chronological order as if that's going to help you understand the story better. Obviously each game changes your understanding of the previous games somewhat, but people in 1998 putting Metal Gear Solid into their Playstations didn't know who The Boss was, and that includes the people who made the game.
