This is really awesome and I'm happy to finally have my favorite subreddit back but, y'know, not on reddit. However, we need more people here. I know the discord still has people making the jump and all, but we really should work out ways of making this more publicly known. I dream of the day when there are thousands of people posting hog.
There hasn't even been a proper announcement yet. Things are going great so far.
I was surprised, I've just been randomly going to the site to see if it was up yet because I don't like fucking with discord, and checked today and found out it was out, I assume there was a discord post about it already. When is the official notice going out? lol
There hasn't even been an @everyone ping on the server yet for it, although it has been mentioned in most channels I think.
This is by choice, currently things are slowly ramping up and we can deal with small issues. Soomn™️ official launch posts will be made.
we've been taking things slow to iron out issues as we find them so that the moderation team doens't burn out instatnly.
Screenshot things from chapochat. Post them on reddit and twitter.
People that like them will want to know where they're from.
The problem with this however is that ChapoChat doesn't have anything identifying it as ChapoChat in the space of any content you would screenshot. Hopefully this is changed soon, in the meantime I recommend manually watermarking any content you screenshot with the ChapoChat logo + name or finding ways to include it.
I brought up the lack of identifiable features in a feedback post here.
I agree and am not advocating for spam. Place things where they should be.
Honestly I have to admit that I'm a little anxious that some people (whether they admit it or not) will have trouble jumping from a big platform like reddit/discord to something scrappy/dev-ey like here. Until we see if that's the case never stop posting o7
I have my concerns about that as well. I actually do really like the design here, but I'll admit that after looking at TD's reddit alternative they made a smart decision by basically copying the exact layout and design of reddit. This forum, while similar, feels different and idk if people will be comfortable making the jump. The other thing is mobile users. I basically always use reddit on my phone, it's just the easiest way. Without having a good mobile client for Lemmy it's a bit harder to use. I tried looking around and couldn't find anything quickly. Luckily, the mobile version of the site is pretty decent, but an actual client would definitely be ideal.
(Oh and no offense to mods but the communities thing is dumb af, we don't have the user base to support that atm and I don't want everything to be fractured)
Community roll out is gonna be pretty slow. But it's a necessary feature: this isn't an alternative to /r/ChapoTrapHouse, it's an alternative to Reddit.
You know, I didn't think about it that way, but that makes me happy. Maybe I can just get rid of that shitty site lol
(Oh and no offense to mods but the communities thing is dumb af, we don’t have the user base to support that atm and I don’t want everything to be fractured)
Well, they did disable new community creation for the time being, so it seems like you're on the same page.
Yeah, we want time to fix the kinks in the system and get more people on the website. Being able to make your own community is part of what made Reddit good, and more communities means more roads of intersectionality!
This isn't just a sub alternative. This will eventually be able to support a huge coalition of leftists and tendencies without techbro censorship. Have faith in your comrades
I completely agree about everything! I wonder how hard it would be to make a super simple web wrapper app that just opens the lemmy (like some newspapers have)? I'm much more of a game programmer than an app one but I guess I could take a look.
And yeah, interestingly enough I think the communities thing is actually one of the few things that worked better on Discord with the channels, with the relatively slow trickle of new replies in the individual channels working better as an ongoing discussion vs. hypothetically a trickle of thin posts.
In theory it is simple, and the Rust back-end of Lemmy provides a REST API for something like that to be built off of, but it is work.
I mean it takes like 2 minutes max to setup an account and it's easy enough to bookmark and shit and hop over to it from reddit. I'm still redditing alongside this, lol. With any luck the easy sign up, much like reddit, will get people to join and actually interact and stick around.
Our mods are working to connect with moderators from Reddit leftist groups. I know that.
Oh really? That's awesome. I guess we have the advantage of our link not being banned (yet at least) the same way TD's is
And as long as we don't get too obnoxious too fast about spamming the URL on Reddit, we can hopefully keep it that way for a while. Otherwise, we do have a handful of alternate URLs we could hook up, but I'd rather we get somewhat established, get an announcement out, build a reputation... you know. We have a team of people working on a coordinated outreach strategy who are trying to think these things through.
hay y'all, wanna join this website based on a subbreddit loosely based on an ironic Brooklyn Twitter leftists podcast?
Once there's an announcement on the discord, it'll get a lot bigger, fast. I don't know why they haven't done it yet.
Making sure everything is working before we notify 10,000 people. Slow rolling it is for the best. For example, the spammers have taught us that we need basically mod nukes for those accounts and to set rate limits.
That makes a lot of sense. Thank you guys for your efforts, really, it's awesome that we're almost there.
get in there and spam "more like piss-cord" until ban
I think this is the soft-launch. This is probably just to see how the servers are handling the load of our shitposting
Backend being the server(s) and stuff running everything.
Generally when you're running a production website, you want to have a view of system usage over time so you run a monitoring solution. It lets you plan future needs, and for modern infrastructure, you can use your monitoring to automatically scale things.
Yeah, I'm pretty happy with how well the site is performing. (I hope that isn't just because it's morning on the east coast.)
Were there changes to lemmy to help handle what is probably the biggest instance of it yet?
I’m hopeful that this community will help prompt some cross-pollination.
There's an emergency pig poop balls at the bottom of every page just in case you ever feel let down like that again.
It would probably make sense to make an announcement on the black wolf sub and various leftist meme subs that are still full of chapo refugees.
A few that immediately come to mind are r/SocialistRA r/SRAWeekend r/DankLeft
Have been seeing some chapos in ShitLiberalsSay and AllTheLeft as well.
