:deeper-sadness:
Edit: turns out cilantro apparently taste like coriander seeds, which I like. Weird phenomenon.
I might be heterozigous for that allele or have low expresion of the soapy variant, cuz I don't think it taste like soap-soap but I don't like it. Anyways, I'm in the "risk group" of the soapy variant.
What about coriander? I like coriander and it comes from the same plant ffs.
(Yeah, I know, chard and beet are the same plant too)
So the dry seeds taste like the green leafs?
¿Then why the fuck I don't like the leafs?
the powder is a bit more intense
have you tried adding soap to your leafy bits to make them more flavourful?
Well, now my life is complete knowing I'm not missing a flavor and I actually like it. Only thing left now is being happy.
As in the seed? That doesn't taste that much different than the leaves I find.
isn't coriander just another name for cilantro? from wiki
"Cilantro is the Spanish word for coriander, also deriving from coriandrum."
A lot of places call the leaves "coriander" and the seeds "coriander seed"
Other places call the leaves "cilantro" and the seeds "coriander"
Yes, exactly, but we call "coriandro" to the dry seeds that we mill and put in sfihas and "cilantro" to the green leaves that people put in salsas.
Extremely different. Parsley much less of a "bright" flavor, reminds me of pine needles. I can't stand the stuff
I thought cilantro and coriander taste completely different though, idk what everyone's talking about
I'm a cilantro-truther, I don't believe anyone has the taste-like-soap gene. If you say it tastes like soap you are either a greedy little worm who put to much in your food or a picky little baby who can't appreciate a mildly complex taste. Stop trying to hide behind some pseudoscience like "genetics" and take some personal responsibility.
Anyone who dosen't get asparagus pee is a Reptilian or possibly a demon
Asparagus pee is a selling point to me. I call it “pamnesia” because I forget that I ate asparagus until I pee and wonder what the hell is wrong with me. Then I chuckle to myself.
Everything actually tastes good. I know this is some Matrix "you are the spoon" shit, but the secret to liking everything is to simply appreciate it for what it tastes like, not what you want it to taste like. Put yourself in the soul of the person who enjoys the ingredient or dish. Why would they like this? I still haven't found a dish or ingredient I don't like with this mindset. I became the spoon. Once I figured that out I got fat as fuck.
Idk dude, we log on here daily to share photos of a pig with shit in its balls,
Come on, there are plenty of good effortposts here too, like: https://hexbear.net/post/103307
:geordi-no: cilantro gene meme
:geordi-yes: cilantro gene keter-class infohazard
It came up because someone made a thread yesterday asking why some people are picky eaters. I'm the one who brought it up originally in that thread because I have the gene and my family cooks with a lot of cilantro, so that kinda sucks.
But, I don't usually get drunk. Like, yeah I like to drink socially, but I don't have a social life actually and I don't get drunk.
I don't really mean alcoholism but I do think there is an association that gets built between the flavor and the sensation that accounts for why so many people grow to like beer
I hate every sensation of alcohol but I love some flavors just only exist in alcohol form, like tequila. Gimme a basic bitch old-school margarita any day
That is a fascinating position, especially with tequila of all drinks. I'm sure there are many people who feel that way but countless more who are exactly opposite
Some flavors just sort of run together into one continuous thing that tastes much better than the gross half. That sort of sweet pear-y peppery spice is tasty, and that blends seamlessly into the alcohol sensations, and then that blends into the spice and bitter of lime/grapefruit and cointreau. I also hate the sensation of being drunk so that's why the flavor matters so much, it's literally the only thing I care about in alcoholic drinks lol
I feel the same way about diet soda, artificial sweeteners all have horrible aftertastes, but grapefruit soda has that little bit of bitterness that melds with it and stops it from sucking.
Have you had Fresca? It is the epitome of your theory.
How has no one mentioned that cilantro is coriander? (regarding the edit)
I want to see an experiment where a restaurant serves two dishes that are exactly the same except they tell the people that one has coriander and the other has cilantro.
Why don't we just make it simple by burning all the cilantro and never growing any more?
Taking away downvotes was a mistake

EDIT: cilantro gang :big-cool:
Hey OP, just letting you know that the reason you like coriander seeds but hate cilantro/coriander leaves is because the compounds in cilantro that taste like soap, aldehydes, are only present in the leaves and not the seeds. The flavor is there for everyone, but people without the genetic marker don't perceive the flavor as particularly pungent or overpowering.
Level 3 for me. Idk what to say. It tastes like soap but in a good way
I think i have the soap gene, but I still love cilantro and eat it whenever i can.
I can't stand cilantro, except it doesn't really taste like soap, but more like mint? It's hard to describe, but it has such a strong, overbearing taste that throws off whatever I'm eating. I can't do it. I've tried, so I'll commit to being a baby from here on out.
It's one of those flavors where it's like, I love it, but also perfectly understand why someone else might hate it. Same with pickled ginger.
Cilantro, also known as coriander, is an herb. People usually eat the leaves or seeds. The leaves are often used in salsa or guacamole. The seeds are often used as a pickle seasoning.
For me cilantro has a metallic taste, I really can't stand it even if I try.
