On this day in 1905, Matumbi tribesmen in colonial German East Africa (modern day Tanzania) destroyed cotton crops and a trading post in the city of Samanga, beginning the Maji Maji Rebellion, which killed 250,000-300,000 people.
The Maji Maji Rebellion (Swahili: "Vita vya Maji Maji"), was an armed rebellion of Islamic and Animist Africans against German colonial rule, triggered by a colonial policy designed to force the indigenous population to grow cotton for export.
In the days leading up to the rebellion, a spirit medium named Kinjikitile Ngwale developed a belief that the people of German East Africa had been called upon to eliminate the Germans. After the Matumbi tribesmen attacked Samanga, Kinjikitile was arrested. Before being executed, he stated that he had already spread the "medicine of rebellion" throughout the region.
The resulting war lasted two years, with the Germans successfully putting the rebellion down by force. As a means to weaken the rebellion, German soldiers deliberately orchestrated a famine by destroying available food sources, devastating the region and killing hundreds of thousands of people.
Such was the scale of this destruction that, in 1953, journalist John Gunther noted "even today the Southern Province of Tanganyika, the 'Cinderella Province,' has not fully recovered from the German terror half a century ago. The economy of the region has never been successfully rebuilt".
Although Tanzania demanded reparations from Germany for these atrocities in 2017, the German government has not paid them as of July 2021. :germany-cool:

A disel ship and a seaplane
A diesel ship leaves on a long voyage. When it is 180 miles from shore, a seaplane, whose speed is ten times that of the ship is sent to deliver mail. How far from shore does the seaplane catch up with the ship?
Like usual have fun :soviet-heart: and dm @Wmill the answer.

Not to defend Joe Biden, but if I had a job I would also try to not do anything.
Probably just have it fall out of your lap. Xbox controllers are so cheaply made and fragile the off brand ones last longer.
Wtf. Reminds me of this creep I went to high school with who started doing pedo things before he even graduated.
He would go into fits of rage when things didn't go his way and throw his phone at the wall. He had backups, so he would often get mad about something, throw his phone and destroy it, and then just get another phone out of his pocket and start texting and stuff like nothing unusual happened. He wasn't rich, this habit costed him a lot money. He was also a huge tech nerd and knowing him he probably coded some system to sync all his fucked up beater phones together.
He also let a cop search his car once, and they planted fake drugs on him. He pled to community service without ever talking to a lawyer, despite the fact the cops even told him they didn't actually have any evidence. I think they were just fucking with him and didn't expect to actually get him on anything. Literally everyone he talked to, and he asked a lot of people about what to do, told him not to do that and he did it anyways.
Last time I talked to him, he was trying to get me to invest in his business scamming elderly people. Which he started after his business of scamming children into using their parents credit cards to buy Minecraft server slots for many times their actual value failed.
He literally couldn't understand why I would be opposed to scamming old people, and responded to me calling him a piece of shit by breaking his phone mid phone call.
I almost forgot he existed, I wonder if he is in prison yet.
That's the kind of shit I used to do when I was younger with unmedicated ADHD.
Yeah I was eight when I used to smash keyboards. Best of luck to you.
I feel like two of my blindspots in life are swords and transitional lenses. I like both.
Also Today was the assasination of Jean Jaurés
Jean Jaurés, the son of an unsuccessful businessman, was born in Castres, France, on 3rd September, 1859. He won a scholarship to the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris. After graduating he taught in schools before becoming a lecturer on philosophy at the University of Toulouse (1883-85).
Jaurés was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1885. Defeated in the 1889 elections he returned to the University of Toulouse. He became increasingly radical in his political views and after reading Karl Marx he began advocating socialism. He was not a revolutionary and supported the Independent Socialists led by Alexandre Millerand.
In 1893 Jaurés was elected to the Chamber of Deputies to represent the working class area of Carmaux. He became involved in the campaign to get the conviction of Alfred Dreyfus overturned. This was not a popular cause at the time and was partly responsible for his defeat in the 1898 election.
In 1900 a congress was held where socialists attempted to obtain a united party. This proved impossible but two new grouping did emerge, the revolutionary Socialist Party of France and the French Socialist Party, under the leadership of Jaurés, that advocated a parliamentary route to power.
The Socialist Party of France was led by Jules Guesde and Edouard Vaillant. This party failed to make much progress and in 1905 it merged with the French Socialist Party.
While out of parliament Jaurés completed his mammoth Socialist History of the French Revolution. He also joined with Aristide Briand and Rene Viviani in 1904 to establish the left-wing newspaper, L'Humanité in 1904.
As well as editing L'Humanité Jaurés continued to write history books and published The Franco-German War (1908) and The New Army (1910). At the Second International he opposed those European politicians calling for armed insurrection. Instead he advocated a policy of "peace through arbitration".
The new Socialist Party under Jaurés grew rapidly at the beginning of the century but split over the correct response to German militarism. Jaurés advocated a policy of international arbitration whereas others supported the Triple Entente.
During the war fever that swept through Europe during the summer of 1914, Jaurés continued to argue for peaceful negotiations between the European governments. On 31st July, 1914, Jean Jaurés was assassinated by a young French nationalist who wanted to go to war with Germany.
"Tradition does not mean to look after the ash, but to keep the flame alive."

The moral of the Felix anti-mask arc is that living in New York will permanently ruin your brain
I have family in Upstate New York and half of them are anti-mask while the other are neolibs. Ugh.
Good morning everyone!
I moved! My comrade (:cat-confused: ) and I were both pretty nervous in the new place, but when I woke up he was walking around and exploring which made me feel a lot more at ease. It's our first time living alone, so lots of mixed emotions!
I remember a few days ago, an obvious wrecker was trying to force a masks struggle session, but nobody was having it. Then Felix tweeted about masks and it happened anyways lol
Is it weird that I'm starting to feel guilty falling behind on Hexbear stuff? Even when I sort by Top there's always unread posts.
