Taken from today's Working Class History Instagram Post

On this day, 12 August 2017, 32-year-old anti-racist Heather Heyer was killed and dozens injured in a white supremacist terrorist attack in Charlottesville, Virginia. Heather was one of thousands of people protesting against a Unite the Right rally of neo-Nazis, Ku Klux Klan activists and other white nationalists and antisemites, when she was hit by a car driven at speed deliberately into the crowd by a 20-year-old Nazi, who was pictured previously on the Unite the Right protest holding a shield emblazoned with the logo of Vanguard America, a far right group. Elsewhere in the city, another group of fascists attacked and viciously beat DeAndre Harris, a young Black education worker, leaving him with spinal and other injuries. President Donald Trump said some of the neo-Nazis were "very fine people".

I'm sure for many of us, it felt like the death of Comrade Heyer was a pivotal moment in our understanding of the fight against fascism. We knew who'd be on the streets to fight, who would be out there against us, and most importantly, who would not be there at all. There's still that danger for standing opposed to fascism, but we fight, because we have to, because the violence will be there regardless, because not everyone can, or not everyone will. It's the only check against the coming tide of fascism.

And thanks to @marxisthayaca for suggesting this, I'll include their whole post here.

Could you link to her funeral service: https://youtu.be/CAoqhV48Avg. The stories memorializing our comrade, need to live on.

Thank you for writing this. :comrades:

You'll be okay, just stay away from people so you don't spread it onwards. My friend's sister caught it after getting vaccinated and she has serious health problems, but it was nothing more than a cold for her.

I’m definitely self-isolating. Trying to see it as an excuse to order doordash (tip 20%) and sleep. Sorry about your sister, glad she’s doing okay.

It was my friend's sister, but she came through it okay. I know some people are iffy on the vaccine, but it straight up saved her life I'm sure. My own very healthy brother caught it before he got vaxxed and he's still dealing with it months later. Just keep eating healthy food and drinking water, and conserve your energy. You will come out of this okay, but the more you take care of yourself, the more damage you do to the virus.

And mask up when those delivery guys come, although I'm sure you were already going to do that.

I was in rehab for unite the right and I had no clue who Heather was until I got out. It was so surreal to me when one of the technicians who worked with us mentioned the violence in Virginia. No one knew what they were talking about because we didn't get CNN or newspapers inside the rehab, which looking back is incredibly bad to intentionally keep people in the dark but I suppose the news can be triggering to others. Trump calling the neo-nazis very fine people was like the first major air horn to me that this guy is sympathetic to fascism. I was still pretty new to leftism back then, more in the socdem vein of thinking.

The whe situation, as a non American, made me realize just how bad Trump is, and to really dig into the history of the USA and fascism further. It further reinforced the idea that fascism must me stomped out and opposed as soon as possible, before it becomes a threat.

Yeah, we knew he was a garbage racist, but that moment really showed us that he openly is okay with fascism. And because he passively approved of it, it made it okay for other racists to openly support that type of behavior.

On an unrelated note, when I was hospitalized for depression, there was a serial killer back in my town. He was on a killing spree within a few miles of where I lived, and it felt so surreal that I had no idea that was going on because I was in a facility.

me, a white collar prole communist:

constantly gives away excess money and possensions to mutual aid, bail funds, stranger's gofundmes, carries cash for the homeless (& buys them lunch), buys loved ones gifts out of their own price range, gives away any excess possessions or sometimes even stuff i'm using if i know i can replace it easier than they can get it, expects & asks for nothing in return, gives anonymously when possible

my shitty ex-friend after i give a family member a present i can easily afford while they're going through a terrible time:

is this... financial manipulation? love bombing?

Some people are just shitty, but it doesn't help that capitalism has truly poisoned people so much that they see genuine open gifting as a trap. It's fucking sick :( And shitty people take advantage of that by actually being actually being financially manipulative or making it seem like harmless generosity is manipulative.

Damn looks like another reason to abolish capitalism

my partner learned to question every single gift giving to them but also loved little gifts. dating was really hard. we found out years later that their sibling has narcissistic personality disorder and their close family had several people with various undiagnosed pathologies. all this to say... they learned that gifts came with strings attached. also their family is upper-middle classish? maybe that also has something to do with it?

People who grew up poor are awesome with gifts. If they have some junk laying around they never use but they know someone who would really appreciate it, they don't hesitate to give it to them. It's great.

this is exactly why i'm so generous, i had to rely on the generosity of others to keep from being homeless at times. $200 to me as a tech drone is easily budgetable but to someone in poverty that's the difference between eating for a week or not.

Me in 2017: This Heather Heyer thing feels like a turning point. Maybe the civil war is finally starting

Me in 2021: Yeah they’ve pretty effectively normalized the death of thousands of people per day and are legalizing running over protesters with your car, but at least I don’t have to think about Richard Spencer anymore

Ok as promised bravy, my funniest stories from working at a software company pre pandemic and overhearing the general meetings.

    • They had to call a general meeting to tell the developers not to hide "Easter eggs" in the software because some tech bro but a bitcoin phrase on the front page of the software and they got tons of emails and phone calls from clients asking what the fuck a "HODL" was/meant.

    • The geniuses decide to push updates to the software during a critical time for a specific client. They said it was fine because everything went well in testing. Turns out, it wasn't fine and the update broke the software. All this while a client needs it to work during this time period. The debrief after this collosal fuck up was intense. They managed to keep this client somehow, by some miracle.

    • Some guy was doing a presentation for some new planned features they were planning to add. He plugs his laptop into the projector without checking, and his presentation was not open. Instead 9gag of all things was open with the anime and hentai pages favourited. Yeah...

That's all I can remember for now

I didn't necessarily work with them as a programmer or anything, I was more the assistant that fixed printers, filled out pointless excel sheets, watched the servers at night, etc. But yeah pretty much. It was pretty cringe. Since it was a tech company, even worse. Imagine your standard silicon valley tech bro crossed with privileged white kid from South Africa, crossed with average reddit/9gag poster, yeah it's pretty bad. And because I'm white they would say a ton of racist shit when they were alone with me and assumed I would agree with them. Obviously I didn't, and I swear they reacted like it's the first time someone called their bs out. There were a few good people though, hopefully they got out of there and found better employment.
